Choose a self-propelled mower if a larger yard, slopes, or fatigue make pushing difficult: its engine or motor drives the wheels. Neither type is best for every yard, so weigh terrain, power source, runtime, storage, and handling alongside lawn size.
How push and self-propelled mowers differ
| Factor | Push mower | Self-propelled mower |
|---|---|---|
| Forward movement | You provide the force to move the mower. | An engine or motor powers the wheels; you still steer and handle the mower. |
| Purchase cost | Tends to cost less. | Often costs more, though the premium varies with features and power source. |
| Effort | Can be a practical fit when pushing is manageable. | Powered wheels reduce the effort of moving the mower, especially over longer runs or inclines. |
| Battery use | Battery charge is used primarily for mowing. | Some battery charge also powers the wheels, which can reduce how much lawn you cut per charge. |
| Gas use and maintenance | Gas versions need fuel and routine maintenance. | Gas versions likewise need fuel and maintenance; gas mowers can run longer and handle larger or thicker lawns. |
| Handling | Simple propulsion does not guarantee easier handling in tight or uneven spaces. | Powered wheels may help on long or sloped passes, but you still steer and manage the mower. |
These are general differences, not guarantees about every model. Features, price, battery capacity, and handling vary, so compare specific mower specifications for the yard you have.

Which type suits your yard?
Small, mostly flat lawn
Start with a push mower if the operator can comfortably push it and a lower purchase cost is a priority. Consumer Reports says a push mower may be enough for lawns up to a quarter acre; treat that as a rule of thumb, not a hard cutoff. A small but steep, awkward, or physically demanding yard can still favor powered wheels. Consumer Reports’ yard-size guidance

Larger lawn or pushing causes fatigue
Consider a self-propelled mower when repeated pushing would be tiring or the property involves long mowing runs. Compare the model’s speed range and controls as well as its drive arrangement; powered wheels reduce pushing effort but do not eliminate steering or other handling work. Sloped lawn
For a walk-behind mower on slopes, Consumer Reports ranks all-wheel drive highest for traction, followed by rear-wheel drive; it describes front-wheel drive as a better fit for flatter ground. A full grass bag can reduce traction at the front wheels of a front-drive model. Check the mower manual and the terrain before choosing a drive type. Consumer Reports’ drive-type guidance
How the power source changes the decision
Battery-powered mower
Check whether the mower can cover the complete lawn on the charge available for your model and conditions. On a self-propelled battery mower, some charge powers the drive wheels as well as the cutting system, potentially reducing area per charge. A larger or additional battery may help only if it is compatible with that mower; verify compatibility and whether a battery is included before buying.

- Exclusive and industry-leading CVT (Continuously variable transmission) offers superior speed variability to adjust the mower pace to your walking speed by simply selecting the 6-speed shift lever
- Exclusive rubber tires with aggressive spiked tread pattern significantly increase overall traction and maneuverability
- Starting made easier with the automatic choke system, no need to prime or choke the engine
- Quickly clean the underside of the cutting deck with the deck cleanout port
- Single-lever deck adjustment for quickly setting your mow height
Gas-powered mower
Gas models can offer longer runtime and handle larger or thicker lawns, but they require fuel and more frequent maintenance than battery models. Account for the upkeep, noise, and exhaust trade-offs when comparing them with battery options. These considerations apply whether the gas mower is push or self-propelled.

What to check before buying
- Terrain and layout: Note slopes, tight turns, uneven areas, and the length of mowing runs. A powered drive can help with effort, but the mower still needs to fit and maneuver through the yard.
- Operator comfort: Consider who will use the mower and whether pushing it for the whole job is comfortable.
- Drive and controls: On self-propelled models, compare drive wheels, available speed control, and ease of operation rather than assuming all powered drives behave alike.
- Bagging and grass conditions: If you collect clippings, account for the added bag weight; it can affect front-wheel traction on front-drive models. Consider whether the mower suits the grass and cutting conditions.
- Battery and storage: For battery models, confirm runtime, included batteries, and compatibility of any spare. Check deck width and storage space for either type.
- Total cost and upkeep: Compare actual prices and included features. Push mowers tend to cost less, but there is no fixed self-propelled premium established across models.
Safe use and U.S. compliance
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says: “Walk-behind power lawn mowers that are consumer products must comply with a mandatory federal consumer product safety standard: 16 CFR Part 1205, the Safety Standard for Walk-Behind Power Lawn Mowers.” CPSC also describes required on-product labeling and a General Certificate of Conformity for covered products; exceptions apply, so the requirements should not be generalized to every machine in every class. - MORE CUTTING POWER: Powerful 170cc 4-stroke OHV engine delivers reliable performance for thick grass and larger yards. Auto choke and recoil start make starting easy.
- LESS PUSHING EFFORT: Self-propelled rear-wheel drive provides better traction on slopes and uneven terrain, reducing pushing effort.
- WIDER CUTS: Wide 22-inch cutting path helps finish mowing faster, while the durable steel deck and heavy-duty blade are built to last season after season.
- VERSATILE 3-IN-1 SYSTEM: Choose between mulching, rear bagging, or rear discharge to match changing lawn conditions.
- EASY HEIGHT CHANGES: Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.
For operating safety, CPSC advises pushing a mower forward rather than pulling it backward and mowing across a slope with a walk-behind rotary mower rather than up and down. Follow the specific mower manual and applicable safety instructions. CPSC’s Power Lawn Mowers Fact Sheet
