Puppeteer vs. Selenium for Full-Page Screenshots: Which Should You Use?

Puppeteer documents full-page capture with `fullPage: true`. Selenium’s documented full-page screenshot support is Firefox-specific, so confirm browser and driver support before building around it.

For a straightforward full-page screenshot, Puppeteer documents a simple option: page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }). Selenium’s documented full-page screenshot support is specific to FirefoxDriver; do not assume the same API works across all Selenium browsers. Choose based on your existing automation stack, target browser and whether you need a whole document or a particular element. Official documentation does not establish a speed, reliability or image-quality winner.

What “full-page screenshot” means in each framework

A full-page capture aims to include the document beyond the currently visible viewport. It is distinct from capturing just the viewport, clipping to a rectangle, or taking a screenshot of one element. The option to capture the whole document does not guarantee that every below-the-fold image or asynchronous component has loaded; page state and wait strategy still matter.

Puppeteer

Puppeteer’s current API reference, version 25.12.0, documents fullPage as a boolean screenshot option. Its default is false; set it to true to request the full page. The screenshot guide also covers element screenshots and navigation waits. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions · Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Selenium

Selenium’s documentation places full-page screenshots under Firefox-specific functionality. The Selenium Python FirefoxDriver API documents methods to save a full-document screenshot as a PNG file or return PNG bytes or base64 data; that API page identifies Selenium 4.50.0. Selenium’s Java API lists FirefoxDriver as the known implementing class for HasFullPageScreenshot. These references do not establish that the same method is available for every Selenium browser driver. See Selenium’s Firefox-specific functionality guide, the Selenium Python FirefoxDriver API, and the Selenium Java full-page screenshot API.

How to choose between Puppeteer and Selenium

Need Practical choice What the documentation supports
You already automate with Puppeteer and want a full-page capture Puppeteer Page.screenshot() documents fullPage: true.
Your tests already use Selenium with Firefox Selenium with FirefoxDriver Firefox-specific full-page screenshot functionality is documented.
Your Selenium workflow uses a browser other than Firefox Verify the exact browser and driver before choosing The sources here do not establish universal Selenium full-page support.
You need a specific element rather than the whole document Puppeteer has a documented element screenshot path; check your exact Selenium browser and driver API for alternatives Puppeteer’s guide documents ElementHandle.screenshot().

This is a documentation-based comparison, not a benchmark. The cited sources do not establish which framework captures faster, more reliably or at higher image quality.

Take a full-page screenshot with Puppeteer

Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then use fullPage: true in the screenshot options. This runnable example navigates to a URL, waits for the networkidle2 condition used in Puppeteer’s guide, and writes a PNG file:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Replace https://example.com with the page you want to capture. networkidle2 is a wait choice, not proof that every application-specific update, animation or lazy-loaded asset is finished.

Useful screenshot options

  • fullPage: true requests a capture of the full page; the documented default is false.
  • path writes the screenshot to a file. If omitted, Puppeteer returns screenshot data.
  • type selects an image type. The API also documents quality for supported formats.
  • clip captures a defined region rather than using the full-page extent.
  • omitBackground enables a transparent background where supported.

Use either a full-page capture or a clip according to the result you need; inspect output after changing capture options. Refer to the API reference for the current option details.

Use Selenium’s documented full-page support with Firefox

The exact method depends on the language binding. In Python, Selenium’s FirefoxDriver reference documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file for saving a PNG and get_full_page_screenshot_as_png or get_full_page_screenshot_as_base64 for returned data. Example using the file method:

from selenium import webdriver

 driver = webdriver.Firefox()
 try:
     driver.get("https://example.com")
     saved = driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png")
     if not saved:
         raise RuntimeError("FirefoxDriver did not save the screenshot")
 finally:
     driver.quit()

Remove the leading space before driver = if copying this into a Python file; the executable form is:

from selenium import webdriver

driver = webdriver.Firefox()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    saved = driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png")
    if not saved:
        raise RuntimeError("FirefoxDriver did not save the screenshot")
finally:
    driver.quit()

Selenium’s Firefox guide says Selenium 4 requires Firefox 78 or greater and recommends using the latest geckodriver. The guide’s examples are for local WebDrivers; remote WebDriver users are directed to separate guidance. Check your installed Selenium, Firefox and geckodriver versions and the binding’s current API before deploying. See the Firefox guide and the Python FirefoxDriver API.

When content below the fold is missing

A full-page option controls capture extent; it does not promise to trigger every site’s lazy-loading behavior or wait for every asset. If the screenshot omits content, first inspect whether the page had rendered that content before capture.

  1. Navigate to the page and choose a wait condition appropriate to its behavior. Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates networkidle2, but a page can still update after network activity settles.
  2. For content that appears only after scrolling or interaction, reproduce the necessary page behavior before taking the screenshot. Confirm that the relevant content is present in the page before capture.
  3. Check the saved image itself and adjust the wait or page preparation for that site. Do not treat a successful screenshot call as proof that all content loaded.

Browser setup alternative: ScreenshotNeo

If you do not need to run your own Puppeteer or FirefoxDriver browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request with a URL can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Its options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, viewport and device settings, and waits. The service accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

Or skip the browser setup:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and options. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Common problems and fixes

  • Selenium method is missing: Confirm you are using FirefoxDriver and the right Selenium language binding. The cited full-page Selenium APIs are Firefox-specific; check the exact browser and driver documentation if you use another browser.
  • Screenshot stops at the viewport: In Puppeteer, verify that fullPage is set to true. In Selenium, verify that you are calling a documented Firefox full-page method rather than a regular viewport screenshot method.
  • Lower-page content is absent: The page may not have rendered it when captured. Use a site-appropriate wait and ensure any required scroll or interaction has happened; then inspect the output.
  • Remote Selenium behavior differs: The Firefox guide’s examples cover local WebDrivers and point remote users to separate guidance. Validate your remote setup rather than assuming local behavior carries over.
  • Output is not the format you need: Puppeteer’s screenshot options include image type and path controls; Selenium’s cited Firefox methods save PNG or return PNG data. Choose a workflow that supports your required format.
