Short answer: Use Puppeteer when each capture depends on a custom browser workflow or you need to operate the browser runtime yourself. Use a hosted screenshot API when your application can describe the capture as an HTTP request and you want the browser-rendering step exposed as a service. Neither approach is a universal winner at scale: compare the behavior, throughput, cost, and operational effort on representative pages from your own workload.
What changes when you use Puppeteer or a screenshot API?
Puppeteer is a browser automation library. Your code launches a browser, navigates to a page, performs any needed interactions, and calls Page.screenshot() to capture it. A hosted screenshot API puts a service between your application and the browser: your application sends a URL and capture options, and the service returns image data. Puppeteer’s workflow is documented in its screenshots guide.

The key decision is not simply whether you expect many captures. It is whether custom control of the browser and page flow is worth operating that browser yourself, or whether your workload can be expressed through a service’s API. A vendor’s documentation can establish what its interface offers, but it does not by itself establish comparative speed, reliability, or total cost for your workload.
When Puppeteer is the better fit
- Your capture needs a bespoke browser flow. Use browser code when you need to navigate through pages, interact with controls, or prepare the page in ways that are not adequately expressed by a hosted service’s documented options.
- You want direct control of the runtime. Your team owns launching and operating the browser and the capture pipeline rather than delegating the rendering request to an API provider.
- Your screenshot is one stage in a larger automation task. Puppeteer lets the capture sit alongside the rest of your browser automation.
The documented baseline is to launch a browser, create a page, navigate, capture, and close the browser. Puppeteer’s guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; treat that as an example, not a guarantee that every site’s meaningful content has finished rendering.

When a hosted screenshot API is the better fit
A hosted API can suit a workload where each job is describable as an HTTP request and your application wants the browser-rendering step provided as a service. The service’s API reference is the authority on which inputs, screenshot controls, limits, and response behavior it supports; do not assume that every Puppeteer option transfers unchanged.

- Browserless documents a REST screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL and Puppeteer-style screenshot options, including full-page and selector capture, and returns image data. See its Screenshot API documentation.
- ScreenshotOne documents GET and POST requests and URL or HTML inputs in its getting started guide.
- Urlbox documents render links and JSON API modes in its API documentation.
These interfaces do not establish that a provider meets a particular production service level. Validate its behavior on the pages and traffic pattern you actually need to support.

Screenshot APIs to evaluate
ScreenshotNeo is the first API to evaluate if you want clean captures without paying for bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, or cache hits: it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and its response identifies the page verdict and billing status.
- Browserless: Its documented REST screenshot endpoint takes a URL and screenshot options and returns image data; it documents full-page and selector capture. Check the endpoint reference for current details.
- ScreenshotOne: Its documentation describes GET and POST requests with URL or HTML inputs. The vendor’s pricing page, retrieved October 3, 2026, listed a free allowance of 100 screenshots per month; Basic at $17 per month for 2,000 screenshots; Growth at $79 per month for 10,000; and Scale at $259 per month for 50,000. It also listed request-per-minute limits and said successful rendered screenshots not served from cache count toward quota. Confirm current terms on ScreenshotOne’s pricing page.
- Urlbox: Its docs describe render links and JSON API modes. The vendor’s pricing page, retrieved October 3, 2026, listed Lo-Fi at $19 per month for 2,000 renders, Hi-Fi at $49 per month for 5,000, and Ultra at $99 per month for 15,000, with differing request-per-minute limits and features. Confirm current terms on Urlbox’s pricing page.
The listed vendor plan terms are not a like-for-like cost comparison with operating Puppeteer. Infrastructure, retries, operational labor, capture requirements, and billing rules all affect the actual comparison.

How to decide for your workload
- Write down the page flow. Identify any navigation, interaction, or page preparation that must happen before capture. If the job depends on bespoke browser behavior, test whether the service can express it; otherwise, direct browser automation may fit better.
- List required screenshot controls. Specify full-page or element capture, clipping, output format and quality, and any background requirements. Puppeteer’s documented controls are in its ScreenshotOptions reference. Check each API’s own reference for equivalent support.
- Decide who will run the browser operation. With Puppeteer, your team operates the browser runtime and capture pipeline. With a hosted API, the capture is an HTTP service request, but you still need to validate the provider’s limits, response behavior, and suitability.
- Model volume and billing rules. Compare the required request rate and volume with each service’s current limits. Establish how successful captures, cache hits, failures, and retries affect billing. For self-operated Puppeteer, include the infrastructure and staff time needed to run and troubleshoot it.
- Run a representative workload test. Use the same target pages and output requirements for each candidate. Track render success, completion time, output correctness, and total cost under your own concurrency and retry pattern. The official product sources cited here document interfaces and listed plan terms, not comparable throughput or reliability results.
Consider Playwright if choosing a browser library
Playwright is another library option, particularly if browser choice or an existing Playwright codebase matters. Its documentation describes page and full-page screenshots and configurable output, including scale, quality, and image format. Compare the browser engines, your existing code, and required screenshot controls using the Playwright screenshots guide and Page API reference. Those documents do not support a blanket claim that Playwright is faster or more reliable than Puppeteer for screenshot workloads.

FAQ
Does using a screenshot API automatically make captures reliable at scale?
No. An API changes who provides the browser-rendering step, but documentation alone does not demonstrate success rates or service levels for your target pages. Test representative pages and verify current limits and response behavior.
