For a one-off Node.js screenshot, Puppeteer and Playwright both provide straightforward page and full-page capture. Choose Playwright if you already use Playwright Test and want its built-in screenshot-baseline workflow; otherwise, choose the library that fits your existing stack and required browser engines. For reliable visual comparisons, keep the rendering environment consistent.
Take a screenshot with either library
Both libraries let you navigate to a page and save a screenshot. These CommonJS examples capture the full page at https://example.com; remove fullPage: true to capture only the current viewport. Install the library used by your script and its browser as directed by that library’s documentation.

Puppeteer
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents this navigation-and-capture pattern and element screenshots: Puppeteer Screenshots.
Playwright
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright documents page and locator screenshots in its Screenshots guide and Page API. These examples show basic usage, not a speed comparison; neither establishes which library will be faster for your site or CI environment.

What differs when capturing screenshots?
| Need | Puppeteer | Playwright | How to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture a page | page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' }) |
page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' }) |
Either is suitable for a basic script; account for your existing project and browser targets. |
| Capture the full page | fullPage: true |
fullPage: true |
Set it deliberately: the default viewport shot does not include all scrollable content. |
| Capture one element | ElementHandle.screenshot() |
locator.screenshot() |
Use the selection approach that fits the automation code you already have. |
| Control image output | Options include clip, omitBackground, path, quality and type. |
The page API documents screenshot controls including full-page capture, clipping, masking and output behavior. | Check option names and defaults in the documentation for the version installed in your project. |
| Compare visual baselines | The reviewed screenshot guide documents capture; it does not establish an integrated visual assertion runner. | Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for visual comparisons. |
If your tests already use Playwright Test, its baseline workflow is a practical reason to choose Playwright. Puppeteer can also be paired with separate test or image-diff tools. |
| Use different browser engines | Chrome for Developers describes Puppeteer automation for Chrome and Firefox. | Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox and WebKit; its API example demonstrates WebKit. | Check support and versions for your exact deployment. Do not assume identical rendering across engines. |
For version-specific options, consult Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference and Playwright’s Page API.
Capture a specific element or control the image
Element screenshots
In Puppeteer, wait for the target selector and capture its element handle:

- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage

const element = await page.waitForSelector('.header');
if (!element) throw new Error('Header not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
In Playwright, use a locator:
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
For a crop, transparent background, output type or other image control, consult the installed version’s API reference rather than assuming option names or defaults match between libraries. Playwright’s API also documents clipping and masking; Puppeteer’s options reference lists clipping, background omission, output path, quality and type.

For screenshot-based visual regression
If the team uses Playwright Test, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() provides a documented workflow for generating a reference image on the first run and comparing later runs. That is a workflow advantage, not proof that Puppeteer cannot be used with another assertion or diff tool. See Playwright Visual Comparisons.
For browser coverage
Match the library to the engines your application must test. Puppeteer’s Chrome for Developers overview says it automates Chrome and Firefox; Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Confirm the exact supported browser builds and behavior for the installed version and deployment environment.

For feature-specific screenshot controls
List what the capture actually needs: full page, element-only, a crop, transparency, masking, a particular output type, or a saved file. Compare those requirements against the installed versions’ documentation. Avoid choosing based on a presumed speed or cost advantage: the cited official materials provide no comparative benchmark or cost figure.
Keep visual screenshots reproducible
A changed screenshot does not necessarily mean the application changed. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same controlled environment; also keep the browser build, viewport, device scale, fonts and page state consistent as practical measures to reduce variation. The latter controls are implementation guidance, not a separately measured guarantee.
Best Value
- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
- Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
- Stabilize the page state: wait for the content the test is intended to capture rather than relying on an arbitrary delay when a meaningful readiness condition is available.
- Account for volatile content: timestamps, rotating ads and similar elements can cause changing pixels. Playwright documents screenshot styling that can hide unstable elements; masking is another documented control.
- Keep the test’s purpose intact: hide or mask a changing region only if that region is not what the test is meant to validate.
- Use full-page capture deliberately: it produces an image beyond the current viewport and may expose content that a viewport-only test does not cover.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
- The image cuts off below the viewport: add
fullPage: trueto the screenshot call if the goal is the complete page. - The element screenshot fails because no element was found: verify the selector and wait for it before capture. Puppeteer’s documented approach waits for a selector; Playwright’s locator screenshot targets the locator.
- The screenshot differs across runs or CI machines: align the OS, browser build, settings, hardware and headless mode where possible, along with viewport, device scale, fonts and page state.
- Only a dynamic region differs: determine whether the changing content is part of the behavior under test. If not, use an appropriate screenshot style or mask rather than weakening the whole comparison.
- An option behaves differently than expected: check the reference for the exact library version installed. Option availability, names and defaults should not be assumed to match across packages or versions.
- Output format or transparency is wrong: check the chosen API’s documented output controls and defaults, then verify the actual file produced by the installed version.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot without managing a local browser flow, ScreenshotNeo offers a single-request capture API. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. Free includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
