Both Puppeteer and Playwright can capture page, full-page, and element screenshots for documentation. Choose based on the automation stack your project already uses and the screenshot controls you need: Playwright documents masking, animation handling, screenshot-only styles, and Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; Puppeteer documents direct screenshot options such as clipping, transparency, image type, and quality. The available documentation does not establish that either library is universally faster, more reliable, or easier to maintain.

Either tool can capture a rendered page, expand the capture to the full page, or target a specific element. Both can save output for later use, so the basic documentation workflow is available in either library.

Where the documented controls differ
Choose Playwright when screenshot-specific controls matter
Playwright’s Page API documents options to disable animations, mask matching locators, and apply styles for the screenshot. These can help keep captures consistent or remove sensitive and transient content from an image. Use them deliberately: masking or styling can also hide real interface differences that documentation readers should see. Choose Puppeteer when its capture options fit your workflow
Puppeteer’s screenshot options cover common image handling needs, including clipping a capture, transparency, image type, quality, and an output path. Quality applies to JPEG, not PNG. Its element screenshot helper can scroll a target into view, but it errors if that element has detached from the DOM; find the element after the page reaches the state you intend to document. The cited Puppeteer sources do not establish a comparable browser-engine matrix, so do not infer one from this comparison. Check the documentation for your installed Puppeteer version if browser choice is a requirement.
How to make documentation captures repeatable
A screenshot is only as useful as the state it records. Prepare the application and browser environment before capturing rather than relying on a screenshot call alone.

- Set deterministic application data. Seed predictable records and use a stable account or fixture. Avoid user-specific content unless it is the subject of the documentation.
- Fix the viewport and device scale. Use the same viewport dimensions and device scale factor in each run so layout and image dimensions do not drift.
- Wait for meaningful readiness. Prefer a condition tied to the UI you need, such as a visible heading or loaded result, over a fixed delay. Puppeteer’s guide includes
networkidle2in an example, but a live application may continue making background requests, so network idle is not a universal signal that the page is ready (Puppeteer Screenshots guide). - Choose how to handle motion and time-dependent content. Freeze timestamps or animation where repeatability matters. If using Playwright’s animation or screenshot-style controls, ensure the resulting image still represents the actual UI.
- Account for content loaded on scroll. Full-page captures and lazy-loaded images may depend on scrolling or app-specific loading behavior. Confirm the content is present before treating the image as complete.
- Capture the target only after the interface is stable. For element screenshots, wait for the target to exist and remain attached; a re-render can invalidate a previously located Puppeteer element handle.
Example workflows
The examples show the core flow; use the readiness condition appropriate to your application. Install and configure the browser dependencies for the version of Puppeteer or Playwright already used by your project. These snippets are not a claim that one library is faster or less flaky.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank or shows the wrong screen
Check that navigation completed and that the script waited for the intended UI state, not merely for a URL change. Use a visible element or app-specific readiness condition and confirm the test account has the expected data.

Confirm that full-page mode is enabled. For lazy-loaded content, make sure the application has loaded the sections and images before capture; a full-page option alone should not be treated as proof that every lazy resource has rendered.
A Puppeteer element screenshot fails after locating the target
The element may have been removed or replaced during a re-render. Wait for the interface to settle, then locate the element again immediately before calling ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer documents that the helper scrolls the element into view if needed and errors when it has detached (API reference).

Repeated captures differ unexpectedly
Compare the viewport, device scale, seeded data, timestamps, animation state, and readiness condition between runs. If a mask or screenshot-only style is involved, inspect the unmodified UI as well so that a stabilization aid is not concealing a real layout change.
The saved image format or quality is wrong
Check the selected image type and output path. In Puppeteer, quality is an option for JPEG rather than PNG (ScreenshotOptions). For Playwright, check the documented format and output options in the screenshot guide.
