Puppeteer vs. Playwright for Full-Page Website Screenshots

Puppeteer and Playwright both document full-page screenshots with fullPage: true. Compare their surrounding controls and learn how to validate captures without assuming an unsupported speed or fidelity winner.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both Puppeteer and Playwright can capture a full-page website screenshot. Their JavaScript calls use the same fullPage: true option, so for a one-off capture the choice usually comes down to which framework your project already uses and which surrounding screenshot controls it needs. Official documentation does not establish a general winner for speed or visual fidelity.

How the full-page screenshot option works

In both frameworks, the screenshot API can capture beyond the visible viewport across the page’s scrollable area. That is different from a standard viewport screenshot, which records only what is currently visible.

Playwright

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });

Playwright describes a full-page screenshot as capturing the scrollable page as if it fit on a very tall screen. Its documentation also shows how to capture a screenshot into a buffer for further processing, or capture an individual element. See the Playwright Screenshots guide and Page screenshot API.

Puppeteer

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });

Puppeteer defines fullPage as a boolean screenshot option. It is false by default; set it to true to capture the full page. Puppeteer also documents page and element screenshots. See the Puppeteer Screenshots guide and ScreenshotOptions API reference.

What differs when you compare them

The essential full-page call is closely aligned. Choose based on your existing stack and the additional screenshot behavior your workflow needs, rather than assuming the shared option makes every capture identical.

Full-page capture page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) is documented. page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) is documented; fullPage defaults to false.

Capture data for further processing The guide explicitly documents capturing into a buffer. The documentation describes screenshot output; consult the current API for the output behavior and options you need.

Additional controls The API documents image format, clipping, quality, transparent background, and masking. The options reference documents image type, clipping, quality where applicable, and transparent background.

How to choose for your project

  • Already use one framework? Start with its screenshot API. For this basic task, switching frameworks just to set fullPage is not justified by the documented feature alone.
  • Need a particular output workflow? Compare the documented options for file or buffer output, element capture, clipping, image format and quality, transparency, and masking against your requirements.
  • Building visual baselines? Prioritize a reproducible rendering environment. Playwright cautions that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering, and recommends using the same environment as the baseline.

Neither framework’s reviewed official documentation provides a controlled Puppeteer-versus-Playwright benchmark for screenshot speed, memory use, maximum page height, or fidelity. Those remain workload-specific questions; the API examples do not establish a universal performance winner.

Make a comparison that reflects your workload

The matching call shapes do not guarantee identical behavior on every page or under every browser condition. If the choice matters for a production workflow, capture the same target with both frameworks under controlled conditions and compare the resulting images.

  1. Use the same URL, browser build, operating system, viewport, and device scale factor.
  2. Use the same navigation and readiness conditions. Decide how your test will handle fonts, images, and other content that may load after the initial page response.
  3. Inspect pages with sticky or fixed elements, lazy-loaded content, and unusually long scrollable regions. These are test cases to validate, not documented proof that either framework handles them better.
  4. Compare the output and record the exact environment and settings so later baseline runs can reproduce it.

For screenshot tests, a stable environment matters: rendering differences can come from the host and browser setup as well as the framework. Playwright’s guidance on visual comparisons explains why baseline generation and test runs should use the same environment.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

  • The image shows only the viewport: Confirm that the screenshot call includes fullPage: true. In Puppeteer, the documented default is false.
  • Content near the bottom is missing: Check whether that content appears only after scrolling or after delayed loading. Make the page’s readiness condition and any lazy-content behavior part of the test, then inspect the captured output.
  • Sticky elements or overlays look unexpected: Compare the capture with the page’s rendered state and test the same URL and browser setup in both frameworks. The shared option does not establish identical handling of every page behavior.
  • Visual baselines differ between runs: Keep the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware and headless mode consistent. Playwright identifies these as factors that can affect rendering.
  • A very tall page fails or behaves differently: The official references reviewed do not establish a maximum page height or a cross-framework limit. Reproduce the issue with the actual page and environment rather than relying on an assumed universal limit.
