In Puppeteer v25.12.0 it contains seven values: BACKGROUND_PAGE, BROWSER, OTHER, PAGE, SERVICE_WORKER, SHARED_WORKER, and WEBVIEW. A target is broader than a page: use Target.page() for page-like targets and Target.worker() for supported worker targets.
What is a Puppeteer target?
Puppeteer’s API documentation describes a target as a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) target that can be debugged, with a frame, page, or worker as examples. The Target.type() method “Identifies what kind of target this is” and returns a TargetType. So a target is the object being classified; a page is one possible kind of target, not a synonym for every target.

The enum reference lists the values but does not define each value’s browser-internal meaning. The useful distinctions supported by the API are which types can produce a Page or WebWorker, and whether a target appears in the ordinary page list.

The seven TargetType values
Puppeteer v25.12.0 lists these seven enum values. The descriptions below stick to the documented access behavior rather than inferring undocumented browser internals.
| Enum value | Documented practical meaning |
|---|---|
BACKGROUND_PAGE ("background_page") |
A page-like target: Target.page() can return a Page. Background pages may be non-visible and omitted from BrowserContext.pages(). |
BROWSER ("browser") |
An enum classification. The cited enum reference does not provide a more specific description or a page/worker access contract for this type. |
OTHER ("other") |
An enum classification. The cited enum reference does not define what browser objects it covers. |
PAGE ("page") |
A page-like target: Target.page() can return a Page. |
SERVICE_WORKER ("service_worker") |
A worker target: Target.worker() can return a WebWorker. |
SHARED_WORKER ("shared_worker") |
A worker target: Target.worker() can return a WebWorker. |
WEBVIEW ("webview") |
A page-like target: Target.page() can return a Page. The enum reference does not provide a more specific description. |

How target types differ from pages and workers
Page-like targets
Target.page() returns null unless the target type is page, webview, or background_page. Use this method when you need page APIs, but account for a null result rather than assuming every target is a page.
Worker targets
Target.worker() returns null except for service_worker and shared_worker. For those two types, it provides the worker access path rather than a Page.

Background-page visibility
BrowserContext.pages() does not include non-visible pages such as background_page. The documentation says these can be found through targets and accessed with Target.page(). Therefore, a missing background page in the ordinary page list does not by itself mean there is no corresponding target.
How BrowserContext fits in
A BrowserContext represents an individual user context with isolated storage. Context scope and target type answer different questions: the context identifies the user environment, while Target.type() classifies a target. BrowserContext.targets() lists active targets within that context.

See the BrowserContext class and BrowserContext.targets(), v25.10.0 references for those context APIs.
Choosing the right API
- Need page operations? Check the target type and call
Target.page(); handlenullfor types outsidePAGE,WEBVIEW, andBACKGROUND_PAGE. - Need worker access? Call
Target.worker()forSERVICE_WORKERorSHARED_WORKER; other types returnnull. - Looking for a background page? Do not rely only on
BrowserContext.pages(); inspect targets in the context and useTarget.page(). - Encountered
BROWSERorOTHER? The cited enum page names these values but does not explain their specific semantics. Avoid assuming they can be treated as pages or workers.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is simply to capture a website rather than inspect Puppeteer targets, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, save this as capture.sh after replacing the key:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
