To capture an authenticated page with Puppeteer, establish the site’s session before navigating: set the correctly scoped cookies on a BrowserContext (or the browser’s default context), or use page.authenticate() if the site uses HTTP authentication. Then wait for an authenticated application state and call page.screenshot(). These methods solve different authentication problems; page.authenticate() is not a general-purpose web form login.
Choose the authentication method the site actually uses
| Method | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Set cookies | The application session is represented by cookies and you have valid cookie data. | Cookie scope and attributes must match the site; a session can expire or depend on other state. |
page.authenticate() |
The protected resource uses HTTP authentication. | Puppeteer enables request interception internally, which may affect performance. This does not submit an HTML login form or complete OAuth, MFA, or a custom identity-provider flow. |
Separate BrowserContext |
You need a distinct browser session for a test or capture. | Establish that context’s storage for each run; contexts isolate cookies and other storage such as local storage. |
Puppeteer’s current API references mark page-level cookie methods deprecated. For new code, use BrowserContext.setCookie() or Browser.setCookie().

Set cookies before navigating to the protected page
The following CommonJS example creates an isolated context, sets a session cookie, navigates to the target, waits for an element that should only appear to a signed-in user, and saves a full-page PNG. Replace the example domain, URL, cookie name and value, and ready selector with values for your application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsconst puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
let context;
try {
context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await context.setCookie({
name: 'session',
value: process.env.SESSION_COOKIE,
domain: 'example.com',
path: '/',
httpOnly: true,
secure: true,
sameSite: 'Lax',
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/account', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
});
// Choose a selector that signals the authenticated page is ready.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="account-dashboard"]', {
timeout: 15000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'account.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
if (context) await context.close();
await browser.close();
}
})().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Install Puppeteer in the project with npm install puppeteer. The cookie object above is an example, not a universal session recipe: supply the attributes required by the site. Puppeteer’s cookie guide describes direct browser-storage manipulation, while the CookieData API documents available cookie fields.

Match cookie scope and attributes
Use the cookie data issued by the site or by a controlled test login. Check its name and value, domain or URL association as supported by the API, path, expiry, secure and HttpOnly flags, SameSite setting, and partition key if applicable. A cookie for a different host or path will not be sent to the target. Do not assume that a copied token alone recreates a working session.
Set cookies before the navigation that needs them. If you use browser.setCookie(...) instead, it applies to the browser’s default context; use the context method when you deliberately created an isolated context.
Use HTTP authentication when the server requests it
For HTTP authentication, configure credentials before navigating. This example waits for a page-specific ready element and captures the visible viewport:

process.exitCode = 1;
});
Page.authenticate() is specifically for HTTP authentication. Puppeteer documents that it turns on request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. For an HTML sign-in page, follow the application’s real login flow or use an authorized test session and its supported cookie mechanism instead.
Wait for the right state, then choose the screenshot area
A successful navigation is not proof that authentication succeeded: the site may redirect to a sign-in page, show an error, or still be rendering the account view. Prefer a meaningful application-specific signal, such as an authenticated-only element. A fixed delay can be useful for known animation timing, but it is not a substitute for checking the expected state. Network idle alone does not guarantee that an application is authenticated or visually settled.
Puppeteer’s screenshots guide demonstrates navigation followed by capture. Page.screenshot() supports capture options including output path and type, full-page capture, clipping, and transparent-background behavior; see the Page.screenshot() API and ScreenshotOptions API.

- Use the default screenshot for the current viewport.
- Use
{ fullPage: true }for the full document; the image can be much taller than the viewport. - Use
clipwhen you need a specific rectangular region. - Use
elementHandle.screenshot()when only one element is needed; Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if necessary. See ElementHandle.screenshot(). - Choose the output path and image type deliberately. If no path is given, the screenshot API returns image bytes rather than saving a file.
Keep sessions isolated and credentials out of logs
Use separate browser contexts when tests or captures need independent signed-in sessions. BrowserContexts isolate cookies and local storage, which helps prevent one run’s state from leaking into another. Create and populate the context for the session you intend to capture, then close it when finished. See the Page class reference for context-related API information.
Session cookies and authentication credentials can grant access to an account. Read them from a secret store or environment variables in automation, avoid printing them to logs, and do not commit real credentials or production session data in fixtures. Use test accounts and rotate or expire credentials according to your organization’s practices.
Troubleshooting Puppeteer authentication screenshots
The screenshot shows a login page
- Confirm that cookies were set before the protected navigation.
- Check that the cookie’s host/domain, path, secure flag, expiry, and SameSite attributes are appropriate for the target URL.
- Verify that the session is still valid and that the app does not require additional cookies or state.
- Wait for an authenticated-only element and fail the capture if it never appears, rather than saving a misleading screenshot.
Cookie API reports an invalid or unsupported value
Compare the object with the installed Puppeteer version’s CookieData reference. Use the current BrowserContext or Browser cookie API rather than deprecated page-level cookie methods. Cookie signatures can vary by installed version, so consult that version’s API reference if an option is rejected.

HTTP credentials do not sign in to the application
Check whether the server is actually using HTTP authentication. If it displays an HTML login form, a custom identity provider, OAuth, or an MFA challenge, page.authenticate() is the wrong mechanism; it supplies HTTP-auth credentials, not application form submissions.
The capture is blank, incomplete, or taken too early
- Wait for a selector that identifies the desired signed-in view.
- Check for redirects, browser-console errors, and application-level access-denied content.
- Use
fullPage: trueif content below the viewport is required, or an element screenshot if only one component matters. - Do not assume
networkidlemeans client-side rendering or visual transitions have finished; use the site’s actual ready condition.
Captures become slower after adding HTTP authentication
Puppeteer documents that page.authenticate() enables request interception internally and that this may affect performance. If the target uses cookie sessions rather than HTTP authentication, use the cookie flow instead. Avoid treating the two methods as interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Puppeteer cookie from my browser profile?
Only if it is still valid and you can provide the cookie data with the correct scope and attributes; a copied value may not be sufficient to restore the site’s session.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Puppeteer screenshot return an image buffer?
Yes. When you omit the file path, the screenshot call returns image data; with a path, it writes the capture to that location.
Which Puppeteer version should I use for these examples?
The documentation snapshot includes version labels 25.12.0 on the screenshots guide and 25.11.0 on one cookie API page. Check your installed package’s API reference for version-specific signatures.
