To capture a page with Puppeteer in GitHub Actions, install the project’s locked Node dependencies, make sure a compatible Chrome browser is available, run a script that saves the screenshot, and upload the resulting file as a workflow artifact. The simplest setup uses puppeteer, which downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser during installation. If package-manager policy blocks install scripts, install the browser explicitly.
Choose how the workflow will get Chrome
The standard puppeteer package manages its compatible browser download. Use it when you want Puppeteer to install Chrome for Testing as part of dependency installation. By contrast, puppeteer-core does not download or manage a browser: your workflow must provide one and tell Puppeteer where to find it.

Use a committed lockfile and npm ci so the workflow installs the versions selected for the project. Puppeteer’s system requirements depend on its release and the runner’s OS and architecture; check the requirements for the version in your lockfile rather than assuming a browser installation will work on every runner. 1. Add the screenshot script
For an npm project using ES modules, save this as capture.mjs and install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer, then commit the updated package files and lockfile.

2. Define the GitHub Actions workflow
Save the following as .github/workflows/screenshot.yml. It checks out the repository, selects Node, installs the lockfile-defined dependencies, runs the capture script, and uploads the image.

3. Retrieve the image
After the job finishes, open its run in GitHub Actions and download the page-screenshot artifact. Artifacts make files produced in the job available after the runner’s workspace has gone away. The script output path and the artifact step’s path must match.

Adjust when the page is ready and what gets captured
Choose a readiness condition
The example waits for networkidle2, which is useful for pages that finish their network activity after navigation. Some applications maintain background requests or load important content after navigation, so this condition may either wait too long or capture too soon for a particular page. In those cases, use a more appropriate navigation condition or wait for an application-specific selector before taking the screenshot.

Set fullPage: true to capture the full page rather than only the visible viewport. Remove it or set it to false for a viewport screenshot. If layout matters, configure the page viewport before navigation so the site renders at the intended dimensions. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents the available screenshot options. If Puppeteer did not download Chrome
Some package manager configurations block dependency install scripts. If npm ci completes but launching Puppeteer fails because Chrome cannot be found, explicitly install the browser after installing the package:

- “Could not find Chrome” or a browser executable error: Check whether the package manager blocked Puppeteer’s install script. Allow the script or add
npx puppeteer browsers installafter dependency installation. - Browser launches locally but fails on the runner: Compare the installed Puppeteer release’s system requirements with the runner’s OS and architecture. Puppeteer’s documented Chrome for Testing support includes Windows x64, macOS x64/arm64, Debian/Ubuntu Linux x64/arm64, and openSUSE/Fedora Linux x64/arm64; required Linux system packages can also matter. - The page content is incomplete: The capture may be occurring before the site has rendered the content you need. Choose a readiness condition suited to that page, such as waiting for a known selector; pages with continuing network activity may not suit
networkidle2. - The job succeeds but the artifact is missing: Confirm the script writes to the path specified in the upload step, and that the file exists before that step runs. GitHub’s artifact action accepts an individual file or directory. GitHub: Store and share data with workflow artifacts
