A Puppeteer screenshot does not automatically trigger every IntersectionObserver. If a page loads content only when it enters the viewport, scroll through the relevant regions, wait for the page’s actual content-ready condition, and then capture. Waiting for navigation or network idle alone cannot guarantee that offscreen content has loaded.
Why IntersectionObserver content is missing
Some sites defer images, cards, or other content until an IntersectionObserver reports that a target intersects its root, often the browser viewport. The initial page navigation can finish while below-the-fold targets have not entered view, so their loading behavior has not run. Google’s guidance for lazy-loaded content likewise says relevant content should load when it is visible in the viewport: Fix lazy-loaded content.
Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() captures the current page state; its API does not promise to visit every scroll position or activate every observer. A full-page capture controls how much of the page is included in the image, but does not itself guarantee that every lazy target was triggered. The standard screenshot example’s use of networkidle2 is a starting point, not proof that application-specific content is ready. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and Page.screenshot() API.
Use a scroll, readiness, and capture sequence
- Identify the missing content. Check whether it is absent from the DOM, present but hidden, an image with no loaded source, or inside an iframe. Choose a condition that reflects what the page must actually finish.
- Expose relevant regions. Scroll in increments so intermediate viewport-triggered targets can intersect. A single jump to the bottom may not reproduce the intermediate view changes a page expects.
- Wait for content, not just navigation. Use a stable selector, expected item count, application readiness flag, or image-completion check.
- Optionally wait for network quiet. Use network idle as a secondary settling step when it fits the site, not as a substitute for triggering observers or checking the content.
- Capture only after the condition succeeds. Return to the desired position if needed, then call
page.screenshot().
The following CommonJS script is runnable with Puppeteer installed. Replace the URL, selector, and expected count with values from the target page. The incremental scroll loop and 100 ms pause are illustrative choices, not Puppeteer requirements; the explicit content check is what prevents an arbitrary delay from being treated as proof of readiness.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',

});
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(200, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
const maxY = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < maxY; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Replace with the real selector and expected count for this page.
await page.waitForFunction(
() => document.querySelectorAll('.lazy-content').length >= 10,
{ timeout: 15000 }
);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
The example assumes the document itself scrolls. If the content is in a nested scroll container, scroll that container instead; if the page changes height as items load, recalculate the scroll range or use a page-specific completion condition. Puppeteer’s page.evaluate(), page.waitForFunction(), and interaction guide document the primitives used here.
Choose a readiness condition that matches the page
Known element
For a stable selector, use page.waitForSelector(). Select whether presence or visibility matters: an element can exist in the DOM while still hidden or empty. Puppeteer documents selector waits in its Page.waitForSelector() API.

Known count or application state
Use page.waitForFunction() for a meaningful condition, such as the expected number of cards or a site-owned ready flag. This is stronger than waiting a fixed number of milliseconds because it tests the result the screenshot needs.
Images
For image-heavy pages, check the relevant image elements’ completion state and whether they have a usable natural size, in addition to waiting for their containers. A rendered placeholder can satisfy a selector without the actual image being ready.

One target versus many regions
For one known target, Puppeteer’s locator and element scrolling behavior can bring it into view. ElementHandle.screenshot() also tries to scroll that element into view when hidden. Neither behavior means all other offscreen targets have been activated; traverse multiple relevant regions when the page has many lazy sections.
Network idle
waitForNetworkIdle() and navigation’s networkidle2 can help when outstanding requests are the remaining issue. Network quiet describes request activity, not whether an offscreen observer target has ever been intersected. Use it alongside a content-specific condition when appropriate.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
- The content is still absent after scrolling: confirm the page uses window scrolling rather than a nested container, and inspect whether the relevant target was actually brought into the observer’s root. Scroll through intermediate sections rather than assuming one bottom jump is sufficient.
- The selector wait times out: verify the selector against the live DOM and confirm the expected content is meant to exist on that route. If content is rendered under another selector or in an iframe, wait in the correct document and for the actual state.
- The element exists but looks blank: distinguish DOM presence from visibility, loaded image state, and completed rendering. Wait for the property or state that matters to the screenshot.
- Network idle succeeds but the screenshot is incomplete: add viewport traversal and an explicit content condition. Idle alone cannot trigger an observer that has not fired.
- Full-page capture still has gaps: treat capture extent and page readiness as separate concerns. Trigger lazy loading and confirm it completed before making the full-page capture.
- Only one element is missing: scroll that element into view, then wait for its content to load. An element screenshot’s automatic scroll is useful for that target, not a page-wide lazy-load mechanism.
Balance coverage, stability, and runtime
There is no universal scroll interval or delay: layouts, observer margins, nested scrollers, and loading behavior differ by site. A smaller scroll increment covers more intermediate viewport regions but costs additional time; a fixed sleep can be too short on a slow page and waste time on a fast one. Prefer an explicit readiness signal, add a timeout with a useful failure message, and traverse only the regions needed for the capture. The Puppeteer documentation surfaced as version 25.12.0; check the documentation matching the version installed in your project if APIs differ.

For a one-request screenshot or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, plus waits for a selector, delay, or network idle. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This is an alternative when you want an API-managed capture rather than writing and maintaining a Puppeteer scrolling workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer fullPage automatically load lazy content?
No. Full-page capture sets the extent of the screenshot; it does not promise to activate every IntersectionObserver target. Trigger the relevant regions and verify readiness first.
Is networkidle2 enough for IntersectionObserver content?
Not by itself. It can indicate network quiet, but it cannot ensure that offscreen targets entered the viewport.
Does ElementHandle.screenshot() fix a page with many missing sections?
No. It tries to scroll its own target into view. For several lazy sections, expose each relevant region and wait for the page-specific content condition.
