If a Puppeteer screenshot is missing images, waiting for navigation or for an <img> element is not enough to prove those images have loaded successfully. Wait for the specific images or the page’s own readiness signal, check for failed requests, and trigger lazy-loaded content before capturing.
Why Puppeteer screenshots can omit images
page.screenshot() captures what the browser has rendered at that moment. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before the capture, which is a useful starting point, but it is not a per-image success check. A page can have an image element whose bytes have not loaded, a failed image request, or images that are not requested until their area is brought into view.

Likewise, waitForSelector('img') establishes that a matching element exists; it does not establish that its image loaded or rendered. A historical Puppeteer issue report from 2017 describes missing screenshot images despite network-idle navigation and an image-selector wait. That is one user’s report, not a guarantee that every current Puppeteer version or site behaves the same way. The current Puppeteer documentation search results identify version 25.12.0.

Use an image-specific readiness check
Start with a network-idle navigation condition, then wait for the images you actually need. The following runnable example waits for the page’s image elements to finish loading, checks whether each has a usable natural width, and reports images that failed or have not produced image dimensions. Adjust the selector and failure policy to match the page: decorative or optional images may not need to block capture.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
// This checks images currently in the DOM. For lazy images below the fold,
// scroll them into view first, as shown in the next section.
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const images = [...document.querySelectorAll('img')];
return images.length > 0 && images.every(img => img.complete);
}, { timeout: 15000 });
const imageStatus = await page.$$eval('img', images =>
images.map(img => ({
src: img.currentSrc || img.src,
loaded: img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0,
naturalWidth: img.naturalWidth
}))
);
const failed = imageStatus.filter(image => !image.loaded);
if (failed.length) {
throw new Error(`Images not loaded: ${JSON.stringify(failed)}`);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
img.complete becomes true for both successfully loaded and broken images, so the example also checks naturalWidth. If the page adds images after initial navigation, or its images are rendered as CSS backgrounds rather than <img> elements, replace this check with an application-specific readiness condition. A selector wait by itself does not cover those cases.
Handle lazy-loaded images before a full-page capture
Lazy-loaded images may not be requested until their region approaches the viewport. A full-page screenshot changes the captured extent; it does not document or guarantee a wait for all images. Scroll through the page to trigger viewport-based loading, then perform the image readiness check and capture.

await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(200, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const images = [...document.querySelectorAll('img')];
return images.every(img => img.complete);
}, { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
The short pause during scrolling is only a trigger for viewport-driven loading; it is not proof that an image finished. Keep the subsequent image-specific check. Some sites use custom lazy-loading logic, so inspect the page’s behavior and adapt the scroll strategy if needed. A historical 2018 issue report concerned lazy-loaded content in a full-page screenshot; it should be treated as a reported case, not as behavior universal to all sites.

Choose the wait that matches the condition
| Approach | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' or waitForNetworkIdle() |
A network-idle condition for navigation or the page. | That each intended image succeeded, or that lazy content was triggered. |
waitForSelector('img') |
A matching image element is present. | That the image bytes loaded or the image rendered successfully. |
| Image-specific or application-specific readiness | The chosen images or application have reached the state required for capture. | It needs a policy for broken, optional, or dynamically rendered images. |
| Scrolling before a full-page capture | Can trigger lazy loading tied to viewport visibility. | That loading finished; follow it with a readiness check. |
Diagnose missing images systematically
- Establish a baseline. Navigate with
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' }), as in Puppeteer’s screenshot example. If the page keeps network activity open, use an appropriate navigation condition and follow it with a targeted check rather than relying on idle alone. - Inspect image state. Confirm the target selector matches the intended elements. Check
completeandnaturalWidth, or the relevant app state, rather than treating element presence as successful rendering. - Look for request failures. Inspect the browser console and failed network requests for the image URLs. This helps distinguish a still-loading request from a broken URL or another page-specific failure; the reported issue cases do not establish one universal cause.
- Trigger deferred content. For images outside the viewport, scroll through the relevant regions and then wait for the image or application readiness condition.
- Capture only after readiness. Use
fullPage: truewhen the entire page extent is needed. That option controls screenshot extent, not readiness.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The image selector appears, but the screenshot is blank
The selector proves only that the element exists. Check whether img.complete is true and img.naturalWidth is greater than zero. If dimensions remain zero, inspect the image request and the page console; do not extend a generic delay without determining what is still pending.

Only images below the fold are missing
Lazy loading is a likely page behavior to investigate. Scroll the affected regions into view, then wait for the target images or app readiness before taking the full-page screenshot.
Network-idle waiting never settles
Some pages maintain network activity. Choose a suitable navigation wait condition for the site and then use an image-specific or application-specific check with a finite timeout. Do not wait indefinitely.

The readiness wait times out
Identify which images remain incomplete or have zero natural width. A timeout can expose a broken request, a selector that includes optional images, dynamically added content, or a page-specific rendering path. Decide whether the failed image should abort the capture or be treated as optional.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s fullPage: true wait for images?
No. It changes the screenshot extent; it is separate from page and image readiness.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does waitForSelector('img') mean an image loaded successfully?
No. It confirms a matching element exists, not that the image loaded or rendered.
