A white screenshot after page.goto() does not point to one specific failure. First inspect the destination URL and main-document response; then wait for—and verify—the page content your script actually needs before capturing it. If the target is a PDF, check the browser launch mode: Puppeteer documents that PDF navigation is unsupported in headless shell. Without the URL, logs, and launch settings, the underlying cause cannot be identified from the screenshot alone.
Start by checking where navigation ended
page.goto() returns the main resource response, or null in documented cases. Redirects resolve with the last response. A resolved navigation therefore does not prove that the intended application view loaded.

});Compare finalUrl with the address you expected, and inspect the status. A redirect to an error, login, challenge, or empty route is one possibility to investigate—not a diagnosis without evidence. Puppeteer’s Page.goto() reference notes that in headless shell valid HTTP statuses such as 404 and 500 do not make goto() throw. Check the response rather than relying on exceptions alone.

The method can return null when navigating to about:blank or to the same URL with a different hash. Treat that separately from a failed HTTP response.

Wait for the rendered view, not just navigation
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is a documented screenshot example, but network quiet is not a guarantee that a client-rendered application has put the required content on screen. Prefer a selector that identifies the actual view, then verify its content.

The Puppeteer screenshot guide demonstrates both network-idle navigation and selector-based readiness. Chrome’s headless rendering guide also uses waitForSelector and cautions that lazy-loaded content may need more time. If the target loads content as you scroll, wait for or trigger that behavior before capturing.

Capture only after the readiness check
Once the expected content exists, take the screenshot. For a specific region, wait for its element and use its screenshot method:

If the DOM is present but the image is still white
If the expected text and elements exist but the captured pixels remain white, treat this as a rendering investigation rather than a readiness failure. Compare a headful run with the headless run, and inspect browser-console messages and failed requests. These are diagnostic checks, not a universal fix; no single cause can be inferred without the failing page and runtime details.
Some sites may behave differently when they detect headless rendering. Chrome’s guide illustrates a headless signal that page-side code can inspect, but it does not establish that a particular modern site is doing so. Use this only as a hypothesis to test against observable behavior.

Check whether the target is a PDF
Puppeteer’s current Page.goto() reference says headless shell does not support navigation to PDF documents. Confirm that the URL serves HTML or establish which browser mode you launched. Do not generalize the headless-shell limitation to every Puppeteer browser mode.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Unexpected final URL: compare
page.url()with the requested address and investigate the redirect destination. - Unexpected HTTP status: inspect the returned response status; navigation may resolve even for an HTTP error status in headless shell.
- Selector times out: confirm the selector matches the real view, allow for application startup or lazy loading, and inspect failed requests.
- Selector exists but has no useful content: verify the element’s text or another page-specific readiness condition before capture.
- DOM is populated but screenshot is white: compare headful and headless rendering and inspect console and request errors.
- Target is a PDF: verify the browser mode; headless shell does not support PDF navigation.
For a specific incident, useful evidence includes the URL, Puppeteer and browser versions, launch options, navigation status and final URL, readiness condition, console and request errors, and the resulting image.
