First determine whether the wrong width is in the browser’s CSS viewport, the page’s rendered layout, or the saved screenshot. Set Puppeteer’s viewport explicitly before navigation, check the document’s scrollWidth against its clientWidth, and verify that screenshot options such as fullPage or clip are capturing the region you intend. These are separate issues, and changing screenshot dimensions alone will not fix overflowing page content.
Separate viewport width from screenshot width
A CSS viewport is measured in CSS pixels. The screenshot file is a bitmap measured in image pixels. The browser’s device scale factor and the region requested for capture can affect the bitmap dimensions, so a file that looks too wide does not, by itself, prove that the page layout is overflowing.
Start by deciding what width you expect: the visible browser viewport, the full rendered page, or the output image. Then record the configured viewport, the page’s runtime dimensions, document overflow measurements, and the saved image’s dimensions. The diagnostic example below logs the browser-side measurements; inspect the image file separately to confirm its pixel size.
Set the intended viewport before navigation
Use page.setViewport() before page.goto(). Puppeteer documents that setting the viewport resizes the page and recommends doing it before navigation, because some websites do not expect mobile dimensions to change after loading. Certain combinations of isMobile and hasTouch can also cause a reload when viewport settings change.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 1280,
height: 800,
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
console.log('Configured viewport:', page.viewport());
console.log('Runtime measurements:', await page.evaluate(() => ({
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
devicePixelRatio: window.devicePixelRatio,
documentElement: {
scrollWidth: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
clientWidth: document.documentElement.clientWidth,
},
body: document.body ? {
scrollWidth: document.body.scrollWidth,
clientWidth: document.body.clientWidth,
} : null,
})));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace the example URL and dimensions with the page and target you are diagnosing. page.viewport() reports settings configured through setViewport() or the browser’s default viewport; it does not inspect the actual page viewport. Compare it with runtime values such as window.innerWidth and window.devicePixelRatio.
If you are emulating a device, Puppeteer’s page.emulate(device) combines the device user agent and viewport and resizes the page. As with setting a viewport directly, emulate before navigation.

Check which region the screenshot captures
For an ordinary viewport screenshot, omit fullPage or set it to false. A full-page screenshot deliberately captures the page beyond the initial visible viewport, while clip specifies a capture region. Review these settings before treating a wider image as a layout defect.
- Viewport capture: captures the visible viewport; use it to compare a fixed browser view.
- Full-page capture: set
fullPage: truewhen you want the page-length image. It is not a viewport-only capture. - Clipped capture:
clipdefines the region to capture. Check its coordinates and dimensions against the intended output. - Capture beyond the viewport: Puppeteer documents
captureBeyondViewportas controlling capture beyond the viewport. Its default isfalsewhen there is no clip andtruewhen a clip is supplied. Check it when a clip may extend beyond what is visible.
For a clean baseline, temporarily remove an accidental clip and capture with fullPage: false. Once the viewport capture behaves as expected, restore the intended capture options.

Measure horizontal overflow in the rendered page
Run this in page context after navigation and after any interactions or waits needed to render the content you want to inspect:
const overflow = await page.evaluate(() => {
const root = document.documentElement;
const body = document.body;
return {
viewport: {
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
devicePixelRatio: window.devicePixelRatio,
},
documentElement: {
scrollWidth: root.scrollWidth,
clientWidth: root.clientWidth,
},
body: body ? {
scrollWidth: body.scrollWidth,
clientWidth: body.clientWidth,
} : null,
};
});
console.log(overflow);
scrollWidth measures content width, including content not visible because it overflows. Compare it with clientWidth: when the former is greater, the document has content extending beyond its client area. Check both document.documentElement and document.body where useful; do not infer the cause from a measurement alone.

Find elements extending beyond the viewport
This candidate list compares rendered element rectangles with the viewport’s horizontal bounds. It is a starting point for inspection, not a definitive detector: nested containers, transforms, and pseudo-elements can affect the result.
const candidates = await page.evaluate(() => {
const width = document.documentElement.clientWidth;
return [...document.querySelectorAll('body *')]
.map((element) => {
const rect = element.getBoundingClientRect();
return {
tag: element.tagName.toLowerCase(),
id: element.id,
className: typeof element.className === 'string' ? element.className : '',
left: rect.left,
right: rect.right,
width: rect.width,
};
})
.filter((item) => item.left < 0 || item.right > width)
.sort((a, b) => b.right - a.right);
});
console.log(candidates);
Inspect a candidate in the browser’s computed styles and its containing layout. MDN notes that pseudo-elements can contribute to an element’s scrollWidth, so an element list may not expose every source; inspect relevant CSS as well.

Fix the layout cause, not just the captured width
Without the affected URL, markup, CSS, or reproduction script, no particular overflowing element can be identified. Treat these common patterns as hypotheses to check, not as a universal diagnosis:
- Fixed-width components: a table, image, or embedded element may exceed its parent. Check its rendered width and make the component responsive where appropriate.
- Unbroken text or URLs: a long token may refuse to wrap and push a container wider. Inspect wrapping rules on the text and its ancestors.
- Absolutely positioned elements: an element positioned outside its containing block can extend the page. Check its offsets and containing block.
100vwplus spacing: an element sized to the viewport width can become wider than its available layout space when padding or margins are added. Check the box sizing and surrounding layout.- Wide tables or images: compare intrinsic dimensions with the container and decide whether the content should shrink, wrap, or scroll within that component.
Correct the offending component or its responsive sizing. Avoid applying overflow-x: hidden to the whole page as a first fix: it can hide the symptom by clipping content while leaving the layout defect in place.
Repeat the capture and interpret the result
- Keep the same viewport dimensions and device scale factor.
- Keep the same capture mode and options, changing only the suspected cause.
- Log runtime viewport and document width measurements again, then check the saved image’s pixel dimensions.
- If document
scrollWidthexceedsclientWidth, continue investigating the page layout. - If the CSS viewport is correct and document widths fit, but the file remains wider than expected, focus on the device scale factor and capture-region options such as
fullPage,clip, andcaptureBeyondViewport.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does page.viewport() tell me the browser’s actual viewport?
No. It returns the viewport settings configured in Puppeteer. Compare it with runtime measurements such as window.innerWidth.
Can document scrollWidth include something I cannot find in the element list?
Yes. Pseudo-elements can contribute to scrollWidth, so inspect relevant CSS as well as rendered element rectangles.
