To capture a URL with Puppeteer, run a short Node.js script that opens the page and calls page.screenshot(). Puppeteer’s official screenshot workflow is an API, not a built-in command that takes a URL as its argument. If you specifically need a terminal command, use a third-party wrapper and check its current maintenance and compatibility first.
Capture a URL with Puppeteer’s official API
The official Puppeteer screenshot method is Page.screenshot(): launch a browser, navigate to a URL, save the screenshot, then close the browser. The following script uses Node.js and the puppeteer package. It writes a viewport-sized PNG named screenshot.png.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Save it as screenshot.js, then run it with Node.js. The official guide’s example uses networkidle2 when navigating; whether that is the right wait condition depends on the page. For pages that render content later, use an application-specific wait as described below.

Install Puppeteer and its browser
- Install Node.js if it is not already available in your environment.
- In a project directory, run
npm init -yif you do not already have a package manifest. - Install Puppeteer with
npm i puppeteer. The package normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing andchrome-headless-shellas part of installation. - Save the script as
screenshot.jsand runnode screenshot.js.
For the current setup details, see the Puppeteer installation guide and screenshot guide.

Choose the screenshot area, format, and wait
Viewport or full page
By default, Puppeteer captures the current viewport. To capture the entire document, set fullPage: true:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
Capture a particular element
Use an element handle when you need a component rather than the whole page. Puppeteer’s ElementHandle.screenshot() method attempts to scroll a hidden element into view before capturing it:
const element = await page.$('.target-element');
if (!element) throw new Error('Could not find .target-element');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
Set a viewport, crop, or image type
Set the viewport before navigating if the page layout depends on screen dimensions:
Recommended Free Tools
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'desktop.png' });
The screenshot options include path for the output file, type for the format, and clip for a rectangular region. The file extension can determine the format when type is not specified; PNG is the default. JPEG quality can be set for JPEG output, but the quality option does not apply to PNG. Use omitBackground: true when you need to omit the default white background and allow transparency. See the ScreenshotOptions reference for the supported options.
Wait for the content you need
A navigation wait is not a universal guarantee that a modern page has finished rendering. The official screenshot example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', which can be useful when network activity is expected to settle:

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
If a page loads a key component after navigation, wait for that component instead of assuming the initial page load is enough:
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.waitForSelector('.content-ready');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'ready.png' });
Choose a selector that actually indicates the content you want to capture. Some sites keep background network requests open, so waiting for network idleness may not be appropriate for every page.
Is there a Puppeteer screenshot command-line tool?
Puppeteer’s official @puppeteer/browsers CLI manages and launches browsers; its documented purpose is not to accept an arbitrary URL and save a screenshot. For example, its help command is npx @puppeteer/browsers --help. Use that CLI for browser setup, not as a URL-to-image screenshot command. See the browser management CLI documentation.
If a direct terminal interface matters more than using the official API directly, third-party wrappers exist:
capture-website-clidescribes itself as a website screenshot CLI built on Puppeteer and documents acapture-website <url|file>command, with image output and viewport options. See its project documentation.puppeteer-screenshot-clidocuments apuppeteer-screenshot --url ... --output ...command, along with selector, format, viewport, timeout, and full-page options. The npm listing identifies version 1.5.0 as published six years before its listing was reviewed; current maintenance and compatibility are not established. Check its status and test it with your installed Puppeteer version before relying on it. See the npm listing.
These wrappers are separate projects, not Puppeteer’s built-in URL screenshot command. Their package documentation may not reflect compatibility with current Puppeteer releases.

Browser installation choices
The standard puppeteer package includes a browser download by default, making it the straightforward choice for a local script. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that download may be skipped, and Puppeteer can fail because its expected browser is unavailable. The installation guide documents manual browser installation with npx puppeteer browsers install.

Troubleshooting
Puppeteer cannot find Chrome
Likely cause: the browser download was blocked or skipped during package installation, or you are using puppeteer-core without configuring a browser.
Fix: for a standard puppeteer installation, install its browser with npx puppeteer browsers install. For puppeteer-core, provide the executable path or browser channel for a browser you manage.
The screenshot is blank or misses content
Likely cause: the page’s content appears after navigation completes, or the chosen wait condition does not match how the site renders.

Fix: wait for a selector that marks the required content as ready, then capture. Use networkidle2 only when waiting for network activity to settle is appropriate for that site.
The result shows only the visible portion of a long page
Likely cause: the default is a viewport capture.
Fix: pass fullPage: true to page.screenshot().
The element screenshot fails
Likely cause: the selector did not match an element on the page.
Fix: check that the selector is correct and that the element exists before calling element.screenshot(). The sample script above checks for a missing match.
The image has an unexpected format or background
Likely cause: the selected output path, screenshot type, or background option differs from what you intended.
Fix: use a matching file extension or set type explicitly; use omitBackground: true when transparency is required. JPEG quality does not apply to PNG.

If you need a direct request rather than a local browser script, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its API accepts the common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. See the API documentation.

Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default; each removal step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
