Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor one modest recurring screenshot job written in Node.js, start with Puppeteer: its browser-launch, navigation, screenshot, and cleanup flow is compact. Choose Selenium when you need its broader language bindings, an existing WebDriver workflow, or remote and distributed browser execution. Neither library schedules the job; a cron service, CI workflow, or other external scheduler starts your script.
How to choose between Puppeteer and Selenium
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A small scheduled job in Node.js with a known browser | Puppeteer | Its standard workflow covers launching a browser, navigating, saving a screenshot, and closing the session. |
| An existing Selenium project or a language other than JavaScript | Selenium | Selenium offers bindings across more languages and uses the WebDriver workflow. |
| Remote execution, multiple browser versions, operating systems, or distributed parallel runs | Selenium Grid or a managed remote browser service | Grid routes WebDriver scripts to remote browser instances. It adds infrastructure and security responsibilities, so it is not necessary for a single-machine job. |
| Exact visual matching between environments | Test the environment that matches your requirement | Neither tool guarantees pixel-identical output across different browser builds, fonts, viewports, device scale factors, locales, time zones, and authentication states. |
There is no basis here for saying one tool is universally faster or more reliable for scheduled screenshots. Compare them against your own pages and deployment environment rather than treating a general benchmark as decisive.
How do scheduled website screenshots work?
The scheduler and browser automation do separate jobs. The scheduler starts your script at the chosen time; the script creates or connects to a browser session, navigates to the page, waits for the relevant content, saves a screenshot, and closes the session.
- Schedule: Configure cron, CI, or another scheduler to invoke the script.
- Open: Launch a local browser or connect to a remote one.
- Navigate and wait: Load the target URL and wait for the page state that matters to the screenshot.
- Capture: Save the full page or a particular element.
- Persist and report: Store the file using a timestamp or stable naming rule, record failures, and close the browser session even when an error occurs.
For recurring jobs, also decide how to handle overlapping runs, credentials, output retention, retries, and browser updates. A fixed viewport and deliberately managed browser version make results easier to compare over time.

Take a scheduled screenshot with Puppeteer
The following Node.js script takes one screenshot when the scheduler runs it. Install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer, save this as screenshot.js, and run it with node screenshot.js. It uses Puppeteer’s documented launch, navigation, screenshot, and close pattern.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Replace the URL and output path for your job. fullPage: true captures beyond the viewport; omit it for a viewport screenshot. A fixed viewport helps keep captures comparable. The finally block closes the browser if navigation or capture fails.
Wait for the page state you actually need
networkidle2 is a useful starting point, not a universal readiness test. Analytics, polling, streaming, or other persistent requests can prevent network idleness; conversely, an idle network does not prove that a delayed visual component has rendered. If a particular chart, heading, or application state matters, wait for its selector or an application-specific condition instead of relying only on network idleness.

For a single element, Puppeteer documents ElementHandle.screenshot(); it scrolls the element into view if necessary:
const element = await page.waitForSelector('.report-card', { timeout: 15000 });
if (!element) throw new Error('Report card was not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'report-card.png' });
Choose the Puppeteer package for your browser setup
The standard puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser by default. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that download can be skipped; Puppeteer documents npx puppeteer browsers install as a remedy. puppeteer-core does not download Chrome and is intended for cases where you manage the browser yourself or use a remote browser.
The Puppeteer FAQ, whose current page identifies version 25.12.0, says that from v23 the project supports Chrome and Firefox. Chrome uses CDP by default and can also use WebDriver BiDi; Firefox uses WebDriver BiDi by default. Check the project documentation for compatibility details as versions change.

Take a scheduled screenshot with Selenium
Selenium WebDriver can control a browser locally or remotely. Its official documentation describes WebDriver as “driv[ing] a browser natively, as a user would, either locally or on a remote machine using the Selenium server.” The exact setup code depends on your programming language, browser, driver, and Selenium version; the JavaScript example below shows the screenshot step within a local Chrome session.
const { Builder } = require('selenium-webdriver');
const chrome = require('selenium-webdriver/chrome');
(async function capture() {
const driver = await new Builder()
.forBrowser('chrome')
.setChromeOptions(new chrome.Options())
.build();
try {
await driver.manage().window().setRect({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await driver.get('https://example.com');
const image = await driver.takeScreenshot();
require('fs').writeFileSync('screenshot.png', image, 'base64');
} finally {
await driver.quit();
}
})().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
This is a browser-session example, not a scheduler configuration. Install Selenium’s JavaScript package and the browser setup required by your chosen environment, then have your scheduler invoke the script. Selenium’s screenshot API also supports screenshots of an element; consult its documentation for the binding and browser combination you use.

Use Grid only when remote or distributed execution is needed
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver scripts to remote browser instances. Its documented purposes include parallel runs and testing different browser types, versions, and operating systems. Remote WebDriver sends the client to a browser on another computer using the Grid address and browser options. That can address a real matrix or distribution need, but it also means maintaining and securing remote infrastructure. Selenium warns that Grid must be protected from external access.

Make recurring captures consistent and recoverable
- Control versions: Pin or deliberately update the library and browser build. Confirm the runner has the browser binary and required operating-system dependencies.
- Define readiness: Prefer a meaningful selector or app state when the visual content has a specific loading condition. Set an explicit timeout and decide whether to retry.
- Fix rendering inputs: Keep viewport, device scale factor, fonts, locale, time zone, browser, and authentication state consistent when visual comparison matters.
- Protect access: Keep passwords, cookies, and tokens out of source control and logs; restrict access to screenshots that may contain private data.
- Prevent collisions: Use a timestamp or run identifier in filenames, or otherwise ensure overlapping jobs cannot overwrite the same artifact.
- Keep useful evidence: Record errors and consider saving a failure screenshot when a capture fails, while applying the same privacy and retention rules as for successful captures.
- Always clean up: Close the browser or quit the WebDriver session in a cleanup path so failed runs do not leave sessions consuming resources.
Troubleshooting scheduled screenshot jobs
The job runs locally but fails in CI or cron
The runner may not have the browser binary, its operating-system dependencies, or permission to launch it. Confirm installation completed and the scheduled environment uses the expected Node.js version and working directory. For Puppeteer, if an install script was blocked and Chrome was not downloaded, run npx puppeteer browsers install or configure a browser you manage with puppeteer-core.
Navigation times out or never reaches network idle
A page with persistent requests may not become idle. Use a shorter, explicit navigation timeout and wait for a selector or application state that signals the content you need. Decide whether a failed attempt should be retried, and log the URL and failure so repeated timeouts can be diagnosed.
The screenshot is blank or misses a widget
Network idleness and page navigation completion do not necessarily mean a specific visual component has rendered. Wait for that component’s selector or a meaningful state before capture. Check whether the component requires authentication, an interaction, or additional time to appear.

Runs overwrite one another or leave browsers open
Give each run a unique output name or prevent concurrent invocations. Put browser closure in a finally block (Puppeteer) or call driver.quit() in one (Selenium), so errors do not skip cleanup.
A remote Selenium session cannot connect
Check that the Grid address is reachable from the job runner and that the requested browser options match an available remote instance. Restrict Grid access to trusted clients; it is infrastructure to protect, not a public endpoint.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium or Puppeteer save a page screenshot automatically?
Yes. Each can save a screenshot when its script runs; use an external scheduler to invoke that script at recurring times.
Does Puppeteer support Firefox as well as Chrome?
The Puppeteer FAQ says the project supports Chrome and Firefox from v23 onward. Browser protocol defaults and compatibility can vary by version.
Do I need Selenium Grid to take screenshots?
No. Grid is for routing sessions to remote browser instances, including distributed or cross-browser workloads; local WebDriver sessions can take screenshots without it.
