page.mouse.wheel() sends synthetic wheel input; it does not guarantee that a page will scroll. Its documented options are the optional numeric values deltaX and deltaY. To target a particular element, move the pointer over it first, then send the wheel input and check the page’s scroll position if you need to confirm that content moved.
What page.mouse.wheel() does
Puppeteer documents the method as Mouse.wheel(options?: Readonly<MouseWheelOptions>): Promise<void>. It dispatches a mousewheel event; the method’s completion is not evidence that the page scrolled. The API reference is labeled Puppeteer 25.12.0, accessed October 3, 2026 (Puppeteer Mouse.wheel()).

Each page exposes a mouse at page.mouse. Puppeteer’s mouse coordinates are main-frame CSS pixels measured from the viewport’s top-left corner. Its mouse events are synthetic and do not fully reproduce normal hardware mouse behavior (Puppeteer Mouse class).

The Puppeteer 25.3.0 interface reference lists these names, types, and optional status, but does not specify property descriptions or default values. Treat positive and negative values as wheel-input deltas, not as a reliable measurement or prediction of content movement. In common browser usage, positive deltaY is often used to request downward wheel input and negative values upward input, but page handlers can change the result (Puppeteer MouseWheelOptions).

How to send wheel input over an element
This runnable example uses the browser page in an existing Puppeteer script. It moves the pointer to the center of the first matching div, then sends vertical wheel input, following Puppeteer’s documented example pattern.

Horizontal or vertical input
Use deltaX for horizontal wheel input and deltaY for vertical wheel input. To request both components in one call, supply both numeric properties. The interface reference does not document defaults, so specify the values your test needs rather than depending on an assumed omitted-property value.

Pointer placement matters
Wheel input is delivered in the context of the pointer position. If a scrollable panel, canvas, or zoomable region should receive it, move over that region before calling wheel(). Puppeteer’s documented example obtains an element’s bounding box and moves to its center first.

How to verify that content actually moved
A wheel event and a scroll event are different. A wheel can occur without scrolling—for example, over an unscrollable area or when a page uses wheel input for zoom. Scrolling can also happen without a wheel event, such as through keyboard input or JavaScript. MDN advises checking scrollLeft or scrollTop during a scroll event when you need the resulting content movement or direction (MDN: Element: wheel event).

Waiting for a position change is useful in a test, but a timeout should be interpreted as “no observed change within this interval,” not proof that the wheel event was never dispatched.

Why a wheel call may not scroll
- The pointer is over the wrong region: move it over the intended scroll container or zoom target before sending input.
- There is nothing to scroll: the document or hovered element may not overflow in the requested direction.
- The page handles wheel input differently: a handler may implement zoom, custom movement, or other behavior rather than ordinary scrolling.
- The event is canceled: a canceled wheel event does not cause the browser’s default scrolling or zooming action. MDN notes that cancelability can vary across a sequence in some browsers; passive listeners can also affect whether the browser waits for handlers (MDN: Element: wheel event).
- You are checking the wrong signal: observe the relevant element’s
scrollToporscrollLeft, rather than assuming the delta or a dispatched wheel event proves movement.

Does page.mouse.wheel() return the amount scrolled?
No. It returns a promise for completion of the input operation, not a scroll distance. Read the relevant scroll position to determine whether content moved.
