Puppeteer’s page.authenticate() is for HTTP authentication—not for filling an ordinary website login form. The examples below save a private page as a PNG and show how to capture a full page or one element.
What you need before capturing a private page
- Node.js and Puppeteer installed in a project.
- Permission to access the account and page being captured. Do not use this workflow to evade access controls or capture someone else’s private content.
- A site-specific, authorized way to sign in. Login forms, single sign-on, and multi-factor authentication differ by service; Puppeteer does not provide one universal login recipe.
The examples use placeholders for the site URL and credentials. Keep real credentials and session secrets out of source control, logs, and screenshots.

Install Puppeteer
In a new project directory, install Puppeteer:

For a standard username-and-password form, navigate to the login page, fill the site’s actual fields, submit the form, and wait for a reliable signal that authentication succeeded. Replace the example URL and selectors with the ones used by the site you are authorized to access.

})();Before running it, set SITE_USERNAME and SITE_PASSWORD in your local environment rather than putting their values in the script. The selectors are examples, not universal site controls. If the site uses a different supported login flow, adapt the interaction and success check to that flow; do not treat the screenshot step as proof that login worked.
Use a fresh browser context when session isolation matters
A browser context isolates cookies and local storage from other contexts. The example creates a dedicated context, performs the login and capture there, then closes it so its isolated state is discarded. This is useful for avoiding accidental dependence on another browser session. If you intentionally need an existing authorized session, use that session’s supported state-management approach instead. See Puppeteer’s BrowserContext documentation.
Puppeteer also provides cookie APIs for inspecting, setting, and removing browser cookie state. Restore cookies only when you are authorized to use that session, and protect exported cookies as credentials. See the Puppeteer cookies guide.

Capture the full page or a selected element
Save a viewport screenshot
The default call captures the page’s current visible viewport and writes the image to the supplied path:

HTTP authentication is different from a website login form
page.authenticate({ username, password }) supplies credentials for HTTP authentication. It does not fill or submit a site’s account-login form. Puppeteer’s API documentation also notes that enabling authentication turns request interception on behind the scenes, which can affect performance. Use it only when the target actually challenges the browser with HTTP authentication; for application accounts, use the site’s supported login flow or authorized session state. See Page.authenticate().

The screenshot shows the login page instead of the private page
The sign-in may not have succeeded, the session may have expired, or the target navigation may have redirected to login. Wait for a site-specific post-login signal before navigating to the target, and verify the final page with a selector or URL condition that distinguishes it from the login page.

The sample selectors are placeholders. Inspect the site’s rendered markup and choose a stable selector for the actual form, success state, or target content. A timeout can also mean the page never reached the expected state, so check whether login failed or the page redirected before simply increasing the timeout.
The site requires multi-factor authentication or single sign-on
There is no universal Puppeteer sequence for these flows. Use an automation method and session provisioning supported by the site or your organization, and do not disable or bypass its protections. If an operator supplies authorized session state, keep it private and handle it as a secret.

The screenshot is blank or missing content
Make sure the target page has loaded and that the content-specific readiness selector is visible before capturing. A navigation event alone may not establish that application data has rendered; choose a readiness condition based on the page’s actual content.
Capture is slower after adding HTTP authentication
page.authenticate() enables request interception internally, which may affect performance. Use it only for HTTP authentication, and avoid adding it to an ordinary form-login workflow.

Reliability and session-safety checklist
- Use only an account and session you are authorized to access.
- Keep passwords, cookies, and other session secrets out of source code and captured images.
- Wait for a meaningful authenticated-state signal and a target-content signal before capturing.
- Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture according to the content you need.
- Close the dedicated context when finished if you want its isolated session state discarded.
