Puppeteer Full-Page Screenshot Cuts Off Content: How to Fix It

A practical Puppeteer fix sequence for screenshots that stop early: request full-page capture, check clipping options, wait for dynamic content, and set the viewport before navigation.

If Puppeteer’s screenshot ends before the bottom of the page, first request a full-page capture with fullPage: true. If content is still missing, check for a limiting clip, wait for the page’s actual content to finish rendering, and set the intended viewport before navigation. For one element or a specific region, use an element screenshot or a clip instead of a full-page capture.

Use fullPage: true for the whole document

Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference identifies fullPage as the option that requests a screenshot of the full page; it defaults to false. Start with:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
});

See the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions reference for the documented capture options.

Run a complete capture sequence

Set the viewport before navigating, then wait for the page state needed by your capture. This minimal example uses Puppeteer’s documented networkidle2 navigation example; it is not a guarantee that every application has completed client-side rendering.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({width: 1440, height: 900});
  await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
  await page.screenshot({path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true});
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

For a page that loads images lazily, appends sections asynchronously, or renders after network activity settles, add a wait for the application’s own readiness signal before taking the screenshot. For example, wait for a selector that only appears when the relevant content is ready:

await page.goto(url, {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-capture-ready="true"]');
await page.screenshot({path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true});

Replace the selector with a real signal from your application. The official Puppeteer screenshot guide demonstrates taking a screenshot after navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; dynamic applications may need an additional, site-specific condition.

Check the options that can limit capture scope

clip defines a region

If your screenshot call or a wrapper passes clip, Puppeteer is being asked to capture a selected region. Remove it for a whole-page image, or verify that its x, y, width, and height match the intended region.

captureBeyondViewport affects extent

The ScreenshotOptions reference says captureBeyondViewport captures beyond the viewport. Its documented default is false when there is no clip and true when a clip is present. If a wrapper modifies options, make the intended behavior explicit and check how it combines with fullPage and clip. Do not leave an unintended clip in place and expect a full-document result.

Choose the capture scope that matches the task

  • Whole document: use page.screenshot({fullPage: true}).
  • Specific region: use clip with the desired coordinates and dimensions.
  • One element: use ElementHandle.screenshot(). The guide says this scrolls a hidden element into view if needed.

These options are documented in the ScreenshotOptions reference and screenshot guide.

Set the viewport before navigation

Use the dimensions intended for the capture before calling goto:

Puppeteer’s Page documentation advises setting the viewport before navigation because many sites do not expect phone-sized viewport changes. Also note that Page.viewport() returns Puppeteer’s recorded viewport settings; it does not measure the browser page’s live viewport. Treat it as a record of configured settings, not proof of what the page currently renders. See the Puppeteer Page API.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Confirm fullPage: true. Without it, the documented default is a viewport capture.
  2. Inspect the final screenshot options. Remove an unintended clip; if a clip is intentional, verify its coordinates and dimensions. Check how captureBeyondViewport is set, especially if a wrapper or helper library supplies screenshot options.
  3. Wait for the actual content state. Navigate, then wait for the specific selector or application-ready condition that means all content you need is present. networkidle2 is a useful navigation condition, not a universal rendering guarantee.
  4. Set viewport before goto. Confirm that the configured size matches the layout you intend to capture.
  5. Use the right scope. Use an element screenshot for one element or a clip for a bounded region rather than trying to solve a scope mismatch with full-page settings.
  6. Check the installed version if viewport state changes. Puppeteer’s changelog records a specific fix in version 22.12.1, dated 2024-06-26, for resetting the viewport after a full-page screenshot when defaultViewport is null. This is relevant if the symptom involves viewport state; it does not explain every cutoff. See the Puppeteer changelog.

The API reference and guide identify version 25.12.0. Check the documentation and behavior for the Puppeteer version and browser backend actually used by your project; the specific viewport fix above applies to the stated historical case.

ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Make a GET request with the page URL to retrieve an image or PDF. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For this example, replace the URL with the page you want to capture and supply your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does networkidle2 guarantee a full-page screenshot will include all content?

No. It is a navigation wait condition, not proof that client-side rendering or application-specific content loading has finished. Wait for the page’s own readiness signal when needed.

When should I use ElementHandle.screenshot() instead of fullPage?

Use it when the target is one element rather than the whole document. Puppeteer’s guide says it scrolls a hidden element into view if necessary.

Which Puppeteer version fixed viewport reset after a full-page screenshot with defaultViewport: null?

The changelog lists Puppeteer 22.12.1, dated 2024-06-26, for that specific viewport-reset case.
