Puppeteer Cookie Priority: What Low, Medium, and High Mean

Puppeteer accepts Low, Medium, and High cookie priority values in Chrome. Here is what the documentation establishes—and what it does not guarantee.

In Puppeteer, CookieParam.priority is an optional cookie setting with three accepted values: Low, Medium, and High. Puppeteer documents the property as supported only in Chrome. Chrome DevTools describes Medium as the default for the deprecated cookie Priority attribute; that does not establish the runtime default when a Puppeteer call omits priority.

What do Puppeteer cookie priority values mean?

They are three priority labels: Low, Medium, and High. The Chrome DevTools Protocol schema marks the cookie priority type experimental, while Puppeteer exposes the property in its API reference. The reviewed documentation does not define a detailed behavioral difference among the levels, so treat them as settings—not as a documented quantitative scale or a promise about how long a cookie will remain stored.

Chrome DevTools’ cookie-table documentation says the Priority field contains Low, Medium (default), or High “if using deprecated cookie Priority attribute.” The deprecation note belongs to that DevTools description. It does not mean Puppeteer has removed its API property.

How do you set priority in Puppeteer?

The property is part of Puppeteer’s CookieParam interface. For the exact signature and version-specific API details, see the Puppeteer CookieParam reference. Its documentation calls priority optional and says it is supported only in Chrome.

await page.setCookie({
  name: 'session',
  value: 'example',
  url: 'https://example.com',
  priority: 'High',
});

Use one of the documented enum values with its exact capitalization. If you omit the optional property, the inspected Puppeteer reference does not state what runtime value will be used. Do not assume that Chrome DevTools’ documented display default proves Puppeteer’s omitted-argument behavior.

Does Puppeteer support cookie priority in Firefox?

Puppeteer’s API reference says this property is supported only in Chrome. If your automation targets Firefox, do not rely on priority being applied or available there. More generally, the protocol schema’s experimental label is a reason not to treat the field as a cross-browser or long-term stability guarantee.

Does High priority stop Chrome from deleting a cookie?

The official references reviewed here do not specify the exact cookie eviction algorithm or promise that High prevents deletion. It is therefore not safe to use high priority as a persistence guarantee. If an application needs a session to survive, design its authentication and recovery behavior around the cookie’s actual lifetime and the possibility that stored state may be unavailable.

What cookie priority does—and does not—control

Priority is distinct from cookie properties such as SameSite, Secure, HttpOnly, domain, path, expiry, and partition key, which Chrome DevTools lists as separate fields. Do not use priority to express where a cookie is sent, whether JavaScript can read it, whether it requires a secure connection, or whether it is partitioned.

Also distinguish cookie priority from the protocol’s resource request priority levels. The Network domain schema lists request priorities such as VeryLow through VeryHigh; those are not cookie priority values. Cookie priority has only Low, Medium, and High.

For a separate website-screenshot task

Cookie priority configures cookie metadata; it is not a screenshot-cleanup setting. If your broader task is capturing websites, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot options can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. It also reports page verdict and billing status in response headers, and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.

ScreenshotNeo includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for details and sign up for the free plan.
