Puppeteer Chrome Release Channels Explained: Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary

Chrome release channels trade maturity for earlier access to browser changes. Here’s how to choose one for Puppeteer and avoid confusing system Chrome with Chrome for Testing.

Chrome Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary are four release channels at different stages of maturity. For dependable Puppeteer automation, start with the Chrome for Testing version supported by your Puppeteer release; choose a regular Chrome channel when you specifically need that installation or want to test browser changes earlier. Chrome for Testing is an automation-focused Chrome flavor, not a fifth channel.

What is the difference between Chrome Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary?

The channels expose browser changes at different points in Chrome’s development and validation process. The earlier the channel, the sooner you can encounter changes—and the more instability you should be prepared to handle. Chrome for Developers describes the release channels and Chrome for Testing.

Channel What it is for What to expect in automation
Stable Chrome’s broadly used default release stream. A useful baseline when you want automation to reflect routine use of Chrome Stable.
Beta A preview of an upcoming Stable release. Useful for checking compatibility with changes before they reach Stable; include a supported browser as a comparison baseline.
Dev Following active development and prototyping against newer browser changes. Changes may be less settled; expect breakage more readily than with Stable.
Canary The most experimental stream, with early features and less testing. Best suited to exploratory checks, not a presumed stable production baseline.

These names describe Chrome release streams, not Puppeteer support guarantees. The version of Puppeteer in your project matters: Puppeteer says it works best with its downloaded Chrome for Testing build and does not guarantee operation with another Chrome version. Check the Puppeteer supported browsers table for the release you use.

What is Chrome for Testing, and is it a release channel?

Chrome for Testing is a dedicated Chrome flavor for web-app testing and automation, not a fifth release channel. Puppeteer’s installation tooling can obtain Chrome for Testing by channel or exact version. That gives automation a browser distribution intended for this use, while Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary refer to the maturity of Chrome release streams. Chrome for Developers’ release-channel guide distinguishes the flavor from the channels; the @puppeteer/browsers API documents browser installation tooling.

Which Chrome channel should you use with Puppeteer?

  1. Routine automation: Start with the Chrome for Testing browser supported by your installed Puppeteer version. This is Puppeteer’s strongest compatibility basis.
  2. Upcoming Stable changes: Add Beta as an additional compatibility check while retaining the supported Chrome for Testing version as your baseline.
  3. Early prototyping or experimental features: Use Dev or Canary when you need early access, and plan for instability.
  4. System Chrome requirement: Select a channel if the test specifically needs a regular Chrome installation, such as testing against the browser users have installed.

Make the choice by balancing release maturity, how early you need to see changes, and compatibility with your Puppeteer version—not simply by picking the newest-sounding channel. The LaunchOptions interface and PuppeteerNode.launch() documentation describe the relevant launch settings.

How do I launch Puppeteer with Chrome Beta?

Install Chrome Beta separately, then pass channel: 'beta' to Puppeteer. The channel option asks Puppeteer to use a regular Chrome installation found in a known system location; it does not install Chrome Beta for you.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
  channel: 'beta',
});

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
  console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

The channel names accepted by Puppeteer are stable, beta, dev, and canary, as listed in the ChromeReleaseChannel enum. The import shown is for the full puppeteer package. With puppeteer-core, provide either executablePath or channel; it does not provide the bundled browser used by the full package. See the Puppeteer installation guide.

Install a Chrome for Testing channel instead

If you want a downloaded Chrome for Testing build rather than a system Chrome installation, use the browser installation tooling. The documented Stable example is:

  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam

npx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome@stable

The CLI also accepts channel tags such as chrome@canary and exact versions. Install the browser you intend to run, then configure Puppeteer to use its executable path as appropriate for your project. The channel option above is for regular system Chrome, not a substitute for downloading a Chrome for Testing build. Refer to the browser API documentation for tooling details.

Does Puppeteer support Chrome Canary?

Puppeteer’s channel enum includes canary, so its launch API can request an installed Chrome Canary. That does not mean every Canary build is guaranteed to work with every Puppeteer version. Puppeteer says it does not guarantee operation with Chrome versions other than the Chrome for Testing version it downloads. Treat Canary as an experimental test target, check the supported-browser table for your Puppeteer release, and keep a supported browser as the baseline.

Do not infer current Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary version numbers from Puppeteer’s compatibility table: that table maps Puppeteer releases to supported browser versions, not to the live version of every channel. For example, the retrieved documentation maps Puppeteer 25.12.0 to Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57; it is a version-specific compatibility example, not a claim about every channel. Check the current supported browsers table for your installed release.

Release cadence and version freshness

Google announced that Chrome Beta and Stable would move to a two-week milestone cycle beginning with Chrome 153 Stable, scheduled for September 8, 2026. The announcement said Dev and Canary would not change as part of that schedule change. Because channel schedules and live versions change, consult Google’s two-week release-cycle announcement and current official release information rather than relying on an undated version list.

Common Puppeteer channel problems

  • Puppeteer cannot find the requested channel: The channel option does not install a browser. Install the corresponding regular Chrome channel on the machine running the script, or use browser installation tooling for Chrome for Testing.
  • puppeteer-core has no browser path: Configure channel for an installed system Chrome, or supply an executablePath. The core package requires one of those choices.
  • A launch works locally but fails on another machine: The expected system Chrome may not be installed or discoverable there. Provide the browser consistently through your deployment setup, or use the Puppeteer-matched Chrome for Testing installation.
  • A newer channel breaks a test: That may reflect browser changes or version incompatibility rather than an invalid channel name. Re-run against the Puppeteer-supported Chrome for Testing version to separate an experimental-channel issue from a broader test failure.
  • The browser launches but behaves differently from production: Confirm that the test’s target browser matches the behavior you need to represent. Beta, Dev, and Canary are previews at different maturity stages, not interchangeable labels for Stable.

When you do not need to manage a Chrome channel

If your goal is simply to capture a web page as an image or PDF, rather than run a Puppeteer browser test against a particular Chrome release, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it provides a website screenshot API and MCP server, so you can request captures without choosing and maintaining a local Chrome channel.

For the API and request options, see ScreenshotNeo documentation. Its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required. Sign up for free.
