Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn Puppeteer 25.12.0, pass an optional BrowserContextOptions object to browser.createBrowserContext(). The interface documents three options: downloadBehavior, proxyServer, and proxyBypassList. A new context also gives pages an isolated storage boundary, including cookies and local storage.
Where BrowserContext options go
Call browser.createBrowserContext(options?). It returns a promise for a BrowserContext; create pages from that context with context.newPage(). The Puppeteer v25.12.0 API reference documents this method and its optional argument at Browser.createBrowserContext().

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext({
proxyServer: 'http://proxy.example:8080',
proxyBypassList: ['localhost'],
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await context.close();
await browser.close();
This example illustrates option syntax; the proxy address is not a tested service. The API’s basic example creates a context without options. Check the reference for the Puppeteer version installed in your project because the interface and browser behavior can change.
The three documented options
All three properties are optional in the v25.12.0 interface. The reference does not establish a particular default proxy configuration, so do not infer one from the absence of a value.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
| Option | Type | What it controls | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
downloadBehavior |
DownloadBehavior |
Behavior for file downloads. When unset, the default behavior is used. | Set it when the context needs a specific download policy. The interface reference does not enumerate the available DownloadBehavior values; consult that type’s reference rather than assuming values. |
proxyServer |
string |
A proxy server, optionally with a port, for requests. | Set the proxy endpoint for the context. Puppeteer’s interface reference says proxy username and password can be set with Page.authenticate; verify authentication behavior with your browser version and target. |
proxyBypassList |
string[] |
A list of hosts that bypass the proxy. | Use it for hosts that should connect without the configured proxy. |
These are separate controls rather than alternatives: choose download handling for file policy, a proxy endpoint for request routing, and a bypass list for exceptions. The BrowserContextOptions interface reference is the authority for their documented types and meanings.
What a browser context isolates
Puppeteer describes a BrowserContext as an individual user context with isolated storage, including cookies and localStorage. A created context does not share cookies or cache with other browser contexts. This makes contexts useful for separating sessions within a browser process; it does not mean that separate pages inside one context have independent storage.

- Screen Size: 11.6"
- A popup opened by a page, such as through
window.open, belongs to its parent page’s browser context. - In Chrome, non-default contexts are incognito. The default context may also be incognito if Chrome was launched with
--incognito. - Create contexts through the browser API. Puppeteer marks the
BrowserContextconstructor as internal.
See Puppeteer’s BrowserContext class reference for context behavior.
Close the context when its work is done
For a non-default context, await context.close() closes the context and all pages associated with it. The default browser context cannot be closed. Close each temporary context when finished, then close the browser if the process is also complete.

Choose options by the job
- Independent sessions: create separate contexts when cookies and cache should not be shared across groups of pages.
- Proxy routing: set
proxyServerwhen requests should use a proxy; addproxyBypassListfor hosts that should bypass it. - Download policy: set
downloadBehaviorwhen the context needs a policy other than the default.

Troubleshooting BrowserContext options
Option appears to have no effect
Confirm the object is passed to browser.createBrowserContext(options), not to puppeteer.launch() or a page method. Check spelling and consult the API documentation matching your installed Puppeteer version.

A host is not using the proxy
Review proxyBypassList for that host and verify the proxyServer endpoint and optional port. A bypass-list match is intended to route the host outside the proxy.

Proxy authentication fails
The interface reference points to Page.authenticate for username and password. Confirm authentication is configured on the relevant page and test against the target browser and proxy; the interface definition alone does not specify every provider’s authentication behavior.

Cookies or cache seem shared
Check that the pages were created from separate contexts rather than from the same context or the default context. Context isolation applies between browser contexts.
Pages remain open after a task
Close the non-default context with await context.close(); this closes its associated pages. Do not try to close the default context.
Or skip the browser setup
