Puppeteer ActionResult: What Locator Action Results Mean

Puppeteer’s ActionResult is a three-member type union, not the result of a locator click. Learn how locator methods, readiness checks, retries, and the Action event differ.

Puppeteer’s ActionResult is a TypeScript union with three string values: 'continue', 'abort', and 'respond'. It is not the status returned by Locator.click() or another locator action: the documented click, fill, and hover methods return Promise<void>. A separate locator event, LocatorEvent.Action, fires before an action. Keeping the type, action methods, and event distinct resolves the terminology.

What does Puppeteer’s ActionResult mean?

The Puppeteer API reference defines ActionResult as:

export type ActionResult = 'continue' | 'abort' | 'respond';

The reference page displaying this type is version 25.1.0: Puppeteer ActionResult API. It identifies the union’s members but does not explain the contexts that consume it or define what each member does. Do not infer detailed behavior from the words alone.

In particular, this is not a result object or a success/failure status produced by calling a locator action. The documented signatures for locator click, fill, and hover return Promise<void>.

What are the results of Puppeteer locator actions?

Locator actions perform an interaction; they do not resolve to the ActionResult union. If the action completes, the documented method promise resolves without a value. If the target is missing, not ready, or fails its configured readiness checks before the timeout, the action can retry and ultimately throw a TimeoutError.

Puppeteer describes locators as strategies for finding objects and performing actions. The current page-interactions guide calls them the recommended way to select and interact with an element. Locator actions check readiness automatically rather than requiring a separate wait and action in the common case.

Readiness checks vary by action

Action Documented checks before acting
click and fill Element is in the viewport, visible, enabled, and has a stable bounding box across two consecutive animation frames.
hover and scroll Element is in the viewport, visible, and has a stable bounding box. The guide does not list enabled status as a check for these actions.

For fill, Puppeteer detects the input type and chooses a suitable method. Supported targets include contenteditable, select, textarea, and input elements; checkboxes, radio buttons, and switches use a boolean value. See the page-interactions guide (version 25.12.0) and Locator class reference for the documented behavior and methods.

Retries and timeouts

The Locator reference says: “If the action fails because the object is not ready for the action, the whole operation is retried.” A retry means the action operation is attempted again while readiness conditions are unmet; it does not turn the action’s return value into an ActionResult. Because retries are possible, instrumentation that observes action attempts should not assume one attempt per call.

Locators inherit the page timeout by default, and a locator can have its own timeout. A TimeoutError is thrown if the element cannot be found or its preconditions are not satisfied in time. The locator API also documents configuration methods for timeout and checks such as visibility, viewport placement, enabled state, and stable bounding box. Use configuration only when the default checks do not fit the intended interaction; disabling a check changes the conditions under which Puppeteer acts.

What does the Locator Action event mean?

LocatorEvent.Action is a pre-action event, not the ActionResult type and not a final outcome report. Puppeteer’s version 25.12.0 guide says the event signals that preconditions have been met and the locator is about to perform the action. The event reference identifies its value as "action" and says it is emitted before every action.

A locator may retry, so the event may fire more than once for one action call. It is useful for logging or debugging attempts, but should not be treated as a single authoritative completion event. See LocatorEvent reference.

How should you choose between locators and lower-level APIs?

Use locators for ordinary element interactions when their built-in readiness checks and retry behavior match the task. The current Puppeteer guide documents waitForSelector as a lower-level alternative: it waits for an element to be available in the DOM, but does not automatically retry a later action if that action fails, and the resulting handle must be disposed of manually. Page-level click, type, and hover remain for backward compatibility and use waitForSelector. Consider those APIs when a needed feature is not available through Locator.

Common points of confusion

  • ActionResult versus click result: the union’s values are not returned by the documented locator click method; that method returns Promise<void>.
  • 'abort' versus an abort signal: Locator ActionOptions includes an optional AbortSignal that can abort a locator action. The reference does not establish a direct mapping between that option and the 'abort' member of ActionResult. See ActionOptions reference.
  • Action event versus completed action: the event occurs before the action and can recur during retries; it does not itself confirm a final result.
  • Same checks for every action: click and fill include enabled-state checks, while the guide’s hover and scroll checks do not list enabled status.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you need is a rendered page image rather than browser interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API can return a screenshot or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers reporting the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
