There is no evidence-based number of days for keeping a published claim provisional. Keep its wording qualified while important evidence, source reliability, or interpretation remains unresolved. Revisit it when credible new evidence or a substantive challenge appears, and correct a known factual error promptly and transparently.
Why there is no fixed deadline
Editorial and scholarly policies describe how to review, update, and correct published work; they do not establish a standard provisional period for a claim. A calendar deadline would confuse the passage of time with the strength of the evidence. The claim’s status should change when the evidence or its interpretation changes, not simply because a set number of days has passed.

That does not mean a published claim should remain indefinitely vague. It means the qualification should match what is known: be clear about uncertainty while it is material, and remove or revise it when the evidence supports doing so.
Decide what kind of change has occurred
An error that existed at publication
If the claim was factually wrong when published and the error should have been recognized then, correct the record. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) distinguishes such errors from later changes in scientific understanding. Its policy says, “Matters of debate and evolving science and methods are not errors.” ICMJE, Corrections and Version Control.

New evidence or evolving debate
A development after publication is not automatically proof that the original claim was erroneous. It may change what readers should believe now, or it may show that a question remains disputed. Update the piece when the new information materially changes its content; do not label every change in scientific knowledge a correction of an earlier error.
A serious concern still under investigation
When a credible concern is unresolved, an editor’s note or expression of concern can alert readers while an inquiry proceeds. The eventual response depends on what the inquiry establishes; it may be an update, a correction, republication, or retraction. Nature Portfolio, Corrections, Retractions and Matters Arising.
Use evidence as the review trigger
When a challenge or new finding arrives, evaluate its substance before changing the claim. Science Feedback’s editorial standards call for preferring primary sources where available, checking central claims against more than one source when possible, and representing uncertainty without giving unsupported positions equal weight. - Assess the source’s reliability and, where possible, corroborate a central finding independently.
- Distinguish a genuine change in evidence from an interpretation or debate that remains unsettled.
- Decide whether the information changes the wording, conclusion, or practical meaning for readers.
Make substantive changes visible
Do not silently rewrite the record when a post-publication change affects what readers take away. Science Feedback says a review updated with new post-publication information should carry a dated note identifying where the change was made and summarizing the addition. ICMJE calls for correction notices that explain changes and cite the original publication; its policy also addresses version dates and archives. A cosmetic edit need not be presented as a substantive update.

The form of the notice should fit the change: a dated update for material new information, a correction for an original factual error, and a visible interim notice for a serious unresolved concern. APA Publishing Policies likewise describe public notices for substantive changes and retraction when serious errors undermine an article’s reliability; policies can vary by journal, so check the applicable publication’s current rules. A publication can adopt a policy along these lines: “We review published claims when credible new evidence, a substantive challenge, or a known factual error comes to our attention. We correct material errors promptly, date and explain substantive updates, and label serious unresolved concerns while investigating. We do not assign every claim a fixed provisional period; the appropriate status depends on the evidence and the significance of any new information.” This is a practical synthesis, not a universal policy followed by all publishers.
