A normal pack replacement takes only the battery door or cover off. Replacing the lithium-ion cell inside a pack means opening a glued case, preserving its protection circuit, soldering, and managing fire and polarity hazards. Identify the exact PSP model before buying a battery or planning any repair.
Which battery fits your PSP?
Sony’s Japanese accessory compatibility chart distinguishes the original packs by console family. Its figures are the packs’ listed ratings, not independent capacity tests.

Those are Sony’s original model distinctions. Current third-party stock, authenticity and quality were not established, so search for a “PSP replacement battery” and include your console model in the search, then verify the seller’s compatibility statement. PSP Go and PSP Street require different access procedures; do not assume the simple removable-door method applies to them.
Replacing the complete removable pack
PSP-1000
- Turn the console off and disconnect any charger.
- Press the battery-cover release button on the rear-left side.
- Remove the cover.
- Lift the battery pack out by its edge and install the model-matched replacement.
- Refit the cover, then charge and check that the console recognizes the pack.
PSP-2000 and PSP-3000
- Power the console down and unplug it.
- Open the battery door.
- Remove the pack and insert a replacement identified for the exact 2000/3000 variant, including the PSP-3000 MHB exception.
- Close the door and verify charging and operation.
These procedures are for an intact, removable pack. They do not describe opening the pack itself.

Why a cell swap is a different repair
A cell swap keeps the old pack’s battery-management board but replaces the lithium-ion cell inside its case. Cristi Caciuloiu’s 19 September 2014 report describes this on a PSP-3004 with an S110 pack: he opened the glued shell, installed a donor cell, repeatedly checked polarity and insulated conductive areas that might contact the metal case.
That report is a single dated project, not a factory service procedure, controlled comparison or guarantee. The donor cell fit that author’s shell; the evidence does not establish a universal replacement-cell part number, modern donor specification or safe fit for arbitrary cells. Nominal voltage or physical dimensions alone are not enough to approve a cell.

What the work involves
- Separating a glued plastic enclosure without damaging the cell or wiring.
- Identifying and preserving the original protection and management board.
- Matching the replacement cell’s electrical and physical requirements rather than choosing a generic lithium cell.
- Soldering connections with polarity verified before each connection.
- Insulating terminals and any exposed conductor so nothing can touch the case.
- Reassembling the enclosure so the cell cannot move or be crushed.
This is an advanced battery modification. If you cannot safely work with lithium-ion cells and soldered connections, use a complete replacement pack or a qualified battery/electronics technician instead.

Sony’s PSP-2000 TA-085 service manual states: “RISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS REPLACED BY AN INCORRECT TYPE.” It also says: “DISPOSE OF USED BATTERIES ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS.” Treat those as applicable to both buying a replacement pack and selecting a donor cell.

A swollen, leaking, hot, punctured or otherwise damaged pack is not a candidate for prying open or cell swapping. Do not force it out, pierce it, bend it or continue charging it. Isolate the device from ignition sources and follow your local authority’s instructions for damaged-lithium-battery handling and recycling. The appropriate provider depends on your location.

Choose the complete pack when reliability, time and safety matter more than preserving the original board. Consider a cell swap only when you understand the hazards, can verify the cell and protection arrangement, and accept that the available runtime evidence is limited to one author’s setup.

What runtime evidence actually shows
In the 2014 report, a rebuilt pack with a used donor cell ran a particular PSP for 2 hours and 40 minutes with Wi-Fi on and actively transferring data. That is one observation under stated conditions—not a typical runtime, certification, long-term reliability result or validation of the procedure. The same report says repeated full discharge/recharge cycles are not recommended treatment for a lithium-ion battery.

Sony’s Japanese support page says after-service reception for PSP and PSP go has ended. That statement is specific to that page and region; it does not establish that independent repair services are unavailable elsewhere. For an old or damaged pack, use locally appropriate battery collection or recycling guidance rather than household disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I replace a PSP battery?
Identify the console family first, buy a pack whose model claim matches it, power off, open the battery cover or door, lift out the old pack and install the replacement. PSP Go and PSP Street need more involved access than the removable-door procedure used on PSP-1000/2000/3000.
Can I replace the lithium cell inside a PSP battery?
Technically, an experienced repairer can open an intact pack, retain its management board and solder in a correctly specified cell. It is an advanced modification with significant polarity, insulation and fire risks; the available account is one 2014 project, not a universal safe procedure.
