Update: PSN is back. Sony restored the PlayStation Network on Saturday, February 8, 2025, after an outage that lasted roughly 24 hours. PlayStation said users should once again be able to access online features, but it did not explain what caused the failure beyond calling it an “operational issue.”
What happened to PSN?
The outage began on Friday, February 7, and quickly proved to be more than a problem with matchmaking in one game. PlayStation users reported failures across several core network functions, including:

- Managing account settings
- Playing games that required PSN connectivity
- Using social and online features
- Opening the PlayStation Store
- Accessing PlayStation Direct
- Using PlayStation Video
PlayStation’s official status page initially displayed the message “Some services are experiencing issues,” while all of the major service categories showed problems. That wording understated the breadth of the outage for users who could not sign in, buy content, launch some games, or use online services.

PSN restoration: what Sony said
After the extended disruption, PlayStation posted that the network had been restored:
“PSN has been restored. You should be able to access online features without any problems now.”

The PlayStation status page subsequently changed to “All services are up and running.” Sony’s follow-up communication did not provide a technical postmortem. The only explanation reported by Sony was that the outage resulted from an “operational issue.”

That leaves important questions unanswered. Sony did not publicly confirm that the incident was a hack, distributed denial-of-service attack, server overload, software bug, or maintenance failure. Those theories circulated while the service was unavailable, but they should not be presented as established facts.
Why did some offline games fail too?
A network outage does not necessarily make every offline game unusable. However, “offline” games can still depend on PSN for digital-license verification, account authentication, cloud features, or other checks when they launch.
During this outage, some users said downloaded digital games and single-player content would not start because the console could not validate ownership with PSN. Access was inconsistent: some players could use parts of their libraries or services while others remained blocked. The available reports do not support saying that every physical game or every offline title became unplayable.
If a game normally works without an internet connection but suddenly requests a license check, repeatedly retrying the launch will not fix a server-side authentication failure. Once PSN is restored, restarting the console and launching the game again should allow the license check to complete.

What should affected users do?
Because the outage was on Sony’s side, there was no console setting that could restore the network while the incident was active. Users could still perform a few sensible checks after Sony reported recovery:
- Open the PlayStation status page at status.playstation.com and confirm that the service categories are operational.
- Restart the PS5 or PS4 rather than relying only on Rest Mode.
- Test account sign-in and the PlayStation Store separately. One service may recover before another.
- Check the console’s internet connection under Settings > Network > Connection Status.
- For a downloaded game that will not launch, make sure the console is connected to the internet and retry after signing in.
- Do not delete a game or rebuild the database as a first response to a broad PSN outage. Those steps cannot repair a failed Sony authentication service and may create unnecessary complications.
If PSN’s status page says everything is operational but one account still cannot connect, the issue may be local or account-specific. In that case, checking PlayStation Support for an account notice, confirming the console’s date and time are correct, and testing another network can help separate a local connection problem from a wider service failure.
PlayStation Plus members received five extra days
Sony said it would automatically extend every PlayStation Plus membership by five days to compensate for the disruption. The extension was not limited to people who contacted support, submitted a complaint, or proved that they had attempted to play during the outage.

Account Management > Subscription
On the web, users can use the Manage my subscription option in their PlayStation account. The displayed end date or next payment date should reflect the extension. Account information may not update instantly for everyone, so checking again later is preferable to buying another subscription or contacting support immediately.

There is no official evidence that the February 2025 outage was a cyberattack. It is easy to connect any long PSN outage with the major 2011 PlayStation Network breach, but the two events are separate.
In 2011, Sony said PSN and Qriocity services had been taken offline after a criminal cyberattack. Sony described that incident as requiring a system audit and additional security measures. For the 2025 outage, Sony’s public explanation was limited to an “operational issue.” Without a more detailed statement, the responsible conclusion is simply that the cause was not disclosed.
