Has Sony announced the PS6 release date?
No. In a May 2026 results-call statement reported by GameSpot, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” That is the clearest cited public position: Sony is planning its next console, but has not announced when it will launch.

GameSpot also reported that Sony was monitoring elevated memory prices and expected supply constraints in FY2027 as it considered its plans. Those factors may influence planning, but they do not establish that the PS6 will be delayed or identify a launch year.

There is no confirmed date. A roundup published by Stuff on August 21, 2026, described outside estimates ranging from late 2027 to 2029 and recounted Bloomberg reporting that Sony was considering 2028 or 2029. These are forecasts and attributed reporting—not a launch window announced by Sony. The cited May 2026 Q&A did not confirm any of those years.

How much will the PS6 cost?

Should you buy a PS5 now or wait for PS6?
There is no universally right choice: compare the value of playing now with the cost and uncertainty of waiting. The PS5 remains a substantial platform: Sony Interactive Entertainment reported 93.7 million cumulative PS5 hardware sell-in units as of March 31, 2026. Sell-in counts units shipped by Sony; it is not a count of individually verified active owners.
Buying a PS5 now may make sense if
- You want access to current games soon and expect to use the console regularly.
- The current local price fits your budget, and the games you want are available on PS5.
- Waiting for an unannounced successor would mean going without a console you would otherwise enjoy using.
Waiting may make sense if
- You are satisfied with your current gaming setup and do not need a console now.
- You would rather postpone a substantial purchase until Sony confirms the next console’s timing, price, features, and availability.
