Yes—Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-upscaling option for the standard PS5. The catch is that it is a separate, performance-focused tier: Sony says PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) remains the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro. Sony has not published measurements showing how much the two differ.
What Sony announced
In an October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced QSSR as “a new performance tier of AI upscaling” for the standard PS5. The feature draws on Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says it uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on PS5. Sony’s announcement describes the engineering changes, but does not provide technical performance figures.

Sony says PSSR on PS5 Pro analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them. Its computational demands, Sony says, had made bringing that experience to the standard PS5 impossible. QSSR is the new approach for that console; Sony’s announcement does not say that the Pro’s PSSR is being ported over unchanged.

Sony positions QSSR below PSSR: it calls PSSR the PS5 Pro’s “gold standard,” while describing QSSR as bringing notable improvements in image detail and stability to base PS5. Those are Sony’s qualitative claims, not a published head-to-head test. The announcement gives no side-by-side image-quality metrics, output-resolution figures, frame-time data, or independent test results, so there is no basis here for saying how large the difference is.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two first-wave games and said on October 1 that patches adding QSSR as an additional graphics option were being released “today.” That is Sony’s stated timing; patch availability can vary by region and players may need to download and install the update.
| Game | QSSR status in Sony’s October 1 announcement |
|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | Sony said a patch adding QSSR as an additional graphics option was being released that day. |
| Ghost of Yōtei | Sony said a patch adding QSSR as an additional graphics option was being released that day. |
QSSR is presented as a graphics option in supported games, not as a system-wide switch that automatically applies to every PS5 title. Sony says it will make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers and expects more games to use it, but it has not named additional titles or given an adoption schedule. Check the relevant game’s update notes for current support.

What the developers say
Sony’s post includes comments from the developers of the two launch games. These are developer assessments reproduced in Sony’s announcement, not independent measurements.
- Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said: “QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.”
- Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said: “QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.”
Does QSSR require a PS5 Pro or extra hardware?
No. Sony describes QSSR as an additional graphics option in supported games on PS5. The announcement does not identify a new console, accessory, or display as a requirement. The deciding factor is whether a game supports QSSR and has the relevant update—not whether the player owns a PS5 Pro.
