How much difference you see depends on the game, its graphics mode, and your TV. A 4K set is relevant to 4K output; a 120Hz TV is needed only to display modes that use refresh rates above 60Hz—not for every Pro enhancement.
What PS5 Pro changes for graphics
Sony describes three main advantages for compatible games: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-assisted upscaling technology; more advanced ray tracing for effects such as reflections, shadows, and lighting; and support for higher or more consistent frame rates. Sony says compatible titles can combine ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K output with 60 fps, or up to 120 fps, when the game and display support it. These are capabilities developers can use, not a guarantee that every game gets a large visual upgrade or reaches 120 fps. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page lists the features and supported-game examples.

Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement describes the Pro’s hardware as having 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5 at the time, and claims up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications and a performance claim, not an independent benchmark or a universal percentage improvement in image quality. Sony’s announcement provides the dated comparison.
How the difference can look in actual games
Developers can spend the Pro’s extra capability in different ways: sharper output, richer lighting effects, a higher frame rate, or some balance of those goals. Sony’s examples illustrate why there is no single graphics uplift that applies to every title.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
The Last of Us Part I Remastered: upscaled 4K at a 60 fps target
Sony says the Pro-specific enhanced rendering mode for The Last of Us Part I Remastered renders at 1440p and uses PSSR to upscale to 4K while targeting 60 fps. In other words, 4K describes the output, not the resolution at which the game initially renders. This approach balances image quality and frame rate rather than rendering natively at 4K. Sony’s game example gives the mode details.
Horizon Forbidden West: higher visual quality at 60 fps
Sony says Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 Pro can deliver visual quality that matches or surpasses the standard PS5’s Quality mode while targeting 60 fps. That is a result for this named game and mode, not a promise that all Pro-enhanced games will match a PS5 Quality mode at double its frame rate. Sony’s product page includes the developer’s description.
Which TV capabilities matter?
4K resolution
A 4K TV is the relevant context for Sony’s 4K output and PSSR claims. Upscaling can make a game rendered below 4K produce a 4K image signal, as in the 1440p-to-4K example above; it does not mean that every Pro game renders internally at native 4K. The amount of visible improvement on a particular set also depends on the game and viewing conditions; the available official examples do not establish a universal difference for every TV or viewing distance.

120Hz refresh rate
A 120Hz-capable display matters if a game offers a mode that outputs above 60Hz, including modes targeting up to 120 fps. It is not a prerequisite for all PS5 Pro features: PSSR, ray tracing improvements, and 60 fps modes can matter on a 60Hz display too. The game must support the higher-rate mode, and the display must be capable of showing it.

| What you care about | PS5 | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Upscaling and output | Depends on the game and its modes. | PSSR upscaling is available in compatible games; output can be 4K even when rendering begins below 4K. |
| Ray tracing | Depends on the game and its graphics modes. | Sony describes more advanced ray tracing for compatible games. |
| Frame rate | Depends on the game and selected mode. | Compatible games can target higher or more consistent rates; Sony cites up to 120 fps when title and display support it. |
| TV fit | A 4K or high-refresh-rate TV is not required for every game experience. | 4K resolution is relevant to 4K output; 120Hz matters for modes above 60Hz, not every enhancement. |
Should you choose PS5 Pro for your TV?
Consider the games you actually play and the modes they offer. Sony’s product page listed over 100 PS5 titles enhanced for PS5 Pro when accessed on October 4, 2026; the catalog can change, so check the current official supported-game information for titles that matter to you.
Quick Recap
- Pro is the graphics-focused choice if your games have Pro-specific modes and you want their particular combination of image quality, ray tracing, and frame rate.
- Your TV does not automatically need replacing. A 4K screen makes 4K output relevant, while a 120Hz screen is useful only if you want to display supported modes above 60Hz.
- Keep expectations title-specific. Sony’s examples demonstrate different developer choices, and the available official information does not establish a controlled, representative comparison of every game or the visible difference on every television.
