Choose the standard PS5 if your priority is playing the PS5 library for less. Pro upgrades are game-specific: Sony says features vary by title, so an “enhanced” label is not a guarantee of a particular resolution, frame rate, or visible improvement.
What changes when you choose PS5 Pro?
Both consoles play PS5 games. The Pro adds extra graphics and performance options in supported titles, including Sony’s PSSR image-reconstruction technology, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates. Which features a game uses—and how noticeable the result is—depends on that game’s implementation.

Sony’s US PS5 Pro features page describes these capabilities for compatible games and cautions that features vary by title. Do not assume every upcoming PS5 release will run or look better on Pro, or that every enhancement can be used at once.
PS5 vs. PS5 Pro at a glance
| Decision factor | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Game access | Plays PS5 games. | Plays PS5 games, with additional enhancements in select titles. |
| Graphics and performance | Options depend on each game’s standard PS5 implementation. | PSSR, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates are available in compatible games; the actual combination depends on the title. |
| Storage listed on Sony’s US buying page | 1 TB for the disc model; 825 GB for Digital Edition. | 2 TB. |
| Disc playback | The disc model has a built-in drive. Digital Edition does not. | No built-in drive; a compatible removable drive is sold separately. |
| Price evidence | Current price not established. | US launch MSRP was $699.99 in September 2024; that is historical launch pricing, not a current price. |
Storage figures are the capacities Sony lists on its US buying page; usable space is a separate consideration. The Pro’s 2 TB can reduce pressure to expand storage, but game sizes and your installed library still matter. Check live local prices and bundle contents before comparing the actual premium: the figures above do not establish today’s price gap.

How to judge support for an upcoming game
Sony’s PlayStation Store has a “PS5 Pro Enhanced Games” category, which is useful for discovering titles Sony labels as enhanced. The category is dynamic, and the label alone does not quantify resolution, frame rate, image stability, or how apparent an upgrade will be on your display.
For a specific game, check its current PlayStation Store page and developer or Sony announcements. Look for these details rather than inferring them from the Pro label:
- Whether the game is announced for PS5 and, separately, whether Sony or the developer identifies Pro enhancements.
- Published resolution and frame-rate modes, including any trade-offs between fidelity and performance.
- Whether the description specifies ray tracing or a particular PSSR implementation.
- Whether the game is released yet and whether the feature details reflect a current announcement or update.
For example, Sony’s Marvel’s Wolverine page labels the game “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” That establishes the designation, not a measured comparison or a quantified benefit. If no more specific technical information is published, the sensible conclusion is that Sony identifies the game as enhanced but the size and nature of the improvement remain unspecified.
What PSSR support tells you—and what it does not
PSSR is Sony’s image-reconstruction technology for PS5 Pro. On February 27, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment Lead Architect Mark Cerny said it had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 titles. That is a dated figure from Sony’s announcement, not a count of supported games today. Sony later announced a more advanced PSSR version and named games receiving support in its February announcement and March rollout update.
Those examples illustrate why a title-by-title check matters. Sony described Resident Evil Requiem as the first game using the newer version in the February post; its March update named Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Crimson Desert, and other supported games. The March article also said the system setting could be applied to existing games that support PSSR, while warning that results vary by title. Support for a technology does not by itself promise a particular visual result or frame rate.

Developers have described benefits in specific games, not across the entire library. Housemarque said updated PSSR and dynamic resolution help Saros maintain a stable frame rate in hectic combat and described the image as sharper in its Saros feature article. BioWare Studio Technical Director Maciej Kurowski described Dragon Age: The Veilguard this way: “With the new PSSR, we’re delivering a meaningful improvement in image quality while still maintaining stable framerates in Fidelity and Performance modes.” These are developer descriptions of those games, not independent comparative benchmarks or guarantees for other titles.

Your display
A 4K or 120 Hz television can matter for supported image and refresh-rate features, but neither is required to play PS5 games or use the console. Sony describes Pro features for 4K and 60 Hz/120 Hz displays; whether they make a practical difference depends on the game and the screen you already own. Do not add a new TV to the cost of choosing Pro unless you specifically want one.

Your physical-game collection
PS5 Pro is digital-only as sold. If you own disc games or want to play Blu-ray or DVD discs, include the cost of Sony’s compatible removable Disc Drive when comparing configurations. Sony says the compatible drive plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs, and that an internet connection is required to pair it with the console during setup. The drive is sold separately; see Sony’s buying and drive compatibility details.
Your installed library
The US buying page lists 2 TB for Pro, compared with 1 TB for the standard disc PS5 and 825 GB for Digital Edition. An M.2 SSD can be an option if you need more room, but expansion is not automatically necessary—especially with Pro’s larger listed capacity. Check Sony’s current compatibility guidance before choosing a specific drive.
Which console should you buy?
Choose PS5 Pro if
- You have particular upcoming or current games with confirmed Pro enhancements and want their best available image-quality or frame-rate options.
- You care enough about those title-specific improvements to pay more, after checking current prices in your region.
- Your display can show the features you value, or you are content with the display you already have.
- You are comfortable with an all-digital console or have included the separately sold drive in your budget.
Choose standard PS5 if
- Your main goal is access to the PS5 library rather than Pro-specific graphics options.
- You would rather spend less than pay extra for enhancements that may be limited to selected games.
- The standard model’s storage and disc configuration better fit your needs and existing collection.
Before buying, make a short list of the games you expect to play, verify each game’s current Pro support and published mode details, then compare the consoles’ live local prices and the configuration you actually need. If game-specific details are not published, treat the benefit as unknown rather than assuming the Pro label means a large upgrade.
