For U.S. buyers comparing Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026, the PS5 Digital Edition costs $50 less. Choose it if you buy games digitally and do not need disc playback; choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you own or expect to buy PS5 or PS4 game discs, or want compatible movie-disc playback. The two current models have identical performance, but the CFI-21XX manual lists different SSD capacities: 1 TB for PS5 and 825 GB for Digital Edition.
PS5 vs PS5 Digital Edition: what is different?
The key difference is the disc drive. The standard PS5 includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive; the Digital Edition, as sold, does not. Sony’s FAQ says performance is identical apart from the drive, so the disc model is not faster for games. The current CFI-21XX manual lists both models with the same CPU and GPU family and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, while listing different SSD capacities.

Prices are Sony U.S. recommended retail prices, not guaranteed current retailer prices. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement also lists regional RRPs: U.K. £569.99 for PS5 and £519.99 for Digital Edition; Europe €649.99 and €599.99; Japan ¥97,980 and ¥89,980. Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you buy games digitally
Digital Edition is the straightforward lower-cost choice if your games come from PlayStation Store or a subscription service and you do not need a disc drive. Digital purchases and subscription access are not the same thing: subscription titles may be available only while their service terms and access conditions allow.
Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you have physical games
The standard PS5 can play PS5 game discs and compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs. If your PS4 library includes disc copies, those discs cannot be used on the Digital Edition as sold. Sony said in its November 2020 FAQ that more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on either PS5 model at launch; that was a dated Sony statement, not a current independent compatibility audit. Disc-based PS4 games require a drive-equipped console, while Digital Edition owners need digital copies.
Choose the disc model if you want disc movies
Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD support for the console with a drive. The Digital Edition does not play those discs as sold.

Factor in the storage difference
The current CFI-21XX manual lists 1 TB for PS5 and 825 GB for Digital Edition. This may matter if you keep many large games installed, though neither nominal figure is fully available to users. Storage is a separate consideration from performance: Sony says game performance is identical apart from the drive.
Can you add a disc drive to PS5 Digital Edition?
Some current no-drive PS5 models support Sony’s separately sold disc drive. The CFI-21XX manual includes attachment and removal instructions for a console purchased without a drive. Compatibility depends on the exact console model, so check its CFI number and Sony’s current guidance before buying an add-on. Do not assume every older Digital Edition accepts the same drive; the cited manual does not establish a current add-on price or stock.
Compare the total cost of the Digital Edition plus a compatible drive with the $50 U.S. MSRP difference between the two consoles. If you already know you need discs and the combined option costs more or adds hassle, buying the drive-equipped PS5 is the simpler choice.

What Sony’s 2028 disc announcement means
Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Sony said this does not affect games already released, or games releasing before January 2028, in disc format. This is a future change to production of new game discs—not an immediate end to existing physical games or movie discs. Sony’s announcement

It does not remove the current reasons to choose a drive: playing discs you already own, buying eligible releases before the announced change, or using supported movie discs.
Bottom line: match the console to how you buy
- Buy PS5 Digital Edition if you are committed to digital games, do not need disc playback, and prefer the lower U.S. MSRP.
- Buy PS5 if you own PS4 or PS5 game discs, want supported movie playback, or prefer to keep physical options open.
- Consider Digital Edition plus a drive only after confirming the exact model supports Sony’s add-on and comparing the total cost.
Physical and digital game prices vary by title, place and time, so neither format is always cheaper over the life of the console.
