After a PS5 system software update, check the installed version and whether another update is available at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. You can also review automatic-update and rest-mode preferences if you want to change how future updates or downloads work. Sony’s published guidance does not say routine updates reset user settings, so these checks are optional—not a required reset fix.
Confirm the PS5 update completed
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Check the displayed system software version and whether an update is still available. Sony also identifies this menu as the place to check the current version in its PS5 setup guidance. If your menu labels differ, consult Sony’s current system software update instructions.

Do not interrupt an installation in progress. Sony also cautions against installing system software directly before or after a power outage. Use Sony’s official update file and methods if you need to update manually.

Sony’s published update and support instructions do not establish that routine system software updates reset user preferences. If something behaves differently, check the setting or feature involved rather than assuming the update reset the console. A review can help you confirm your preferences, but there is no reason to reset the PS5 solely because you installed new software.

Review automatic update preferences
In Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, review the options to download update files automatically and install them automatically. These controls determine how future updates are handled; their presence does not mean the latest update changed your preferences. Sony’s automatic downloads and updates guide explains the available controls.
Choose which features work in rest mode
If you use rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Choose options according to what you want the console to do while in rest mode:

If an update failed or a feature is not working
Start with the specific problem and follow Sony’s guidance for that issue. Safe Mode offers separate troubleshooting choices; they are not all equivalent, especially when it comes to data.

| Option | What it does to data | When it may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Retry or manually install an update | Not described as a console reset in Sony’s update instructions. | When a system software update did not complete; follow Sony’s update procedure. |
| Restore Default Settings | Sony says this does not affect user or game data. | When troubleshooting a settings issue and you understand which preferences will return to default. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user and game data and personalized settings. | Only when you intend to erase that data and have considered the consequences. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes console data. | A separate, destructive recovery path—not a routine post-update step. |
Sony explains the distinction between restoring default settings and resetting a console, and describes the choices in its Safe Mode guide. Read each on-screen prompt carefully before choosing a reset or reinstall option.
Manual update using a USB drive
A USB drive is only relevant if you need Sony’s manual update procedure; it is not needed to check settings or update over the network. Sony specifies a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive, a folder named PS5/UPDATE, and an update file named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Follow the current USB update instructions exactly. Reinstallation is a different recovery procedure and deletes console data.
