That can shorten loading and transitions and help games stream assets quickly, but it does not translate into one fixed load-time improvement for every title. The game’s design and the console’s other hardware matter too.
How the PS5 and original PS4 storage differ
The original PS4’s system drive was specified as a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive, according to Sony’s 2013 PS4 FAQ. That is a launch-era specification: later PS4 models and consoles fitted with replacement drives may differ.

A hard drive reads data from rotating disks using mechanical parts. An SSD accesses data electronically, so it can supply requested information much faster. Sony designed the PS5’s internal SSD alongside a custom I/O system to reduce loading barriers and move game assets efficiently. Sony lists the internal drive’s raw read bandwidth as 5.5 GB/s in its PS5: The Ultimate FAQ.
That figure describes storage capability, not a game’s load time. It cannot be converted into a universal number of seconds saved or a percentage improvement: the reviewed Sony material does not provide a controlled benchmark establishing either across games.

What faster storage can change while you play
Initial loads and transitions
When a game needs data before play can begin, faster access can reduce the wait. The same principle can apply to level changes, fast travel, or other transitions that require new areas to load. How noticeable the difference is depends on the title and how it requests and prepares its data.
Streaming scenery and other assets
Games often fetch parts of a world as the player moves through it. Sony says the PS5’s SSD and custom I/O system were designed to remove loading barriers and support rapid asset streaming. That gives developers room to build experiences around faster delivery; it is an opportunity, not a promise that every game will eliminate loading screens or stream every asset instantly.

Frame rate and image quality
Storage speed alone does not raise a game’s frame rate, resolution, or graphics quality. Those depend on the console’s CPU and GPU, the game’s settings and implementation, and any updates or enhancements the developer provides. A smoother-running PS4 game on PS5 may involve Game Boost or a game-specific change rather than the SSD itself.

What happens when you play PS4 games on PS5
Sony says PS4 and PlayStation VR games load more quickly when stored and played from the PS5’s internal SSD, but do not use the SSD’s full next-generation capabilities. A faster drive can reduce some waits, but it does not rewrite an older game’s data-streaming design or guarantee the same improvement in every title.

Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000+ PS4 games can be played on PS5. Some titles may have features that are unavailable, errors, or unexpected behavior. Sony also says select PS4 games can benefit from Game Boost, which may improve or stabilize frame rates; that is separate from the effect of storage speed.

Compatible M.2 SSD expansion
A compatible M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 can store, download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. Requirements for interface, form factor, capacity, speed, and cooling can change, so check Sony’s current M.2 SSD installation guide before buying. Sony does not support M.2 SATA drives, and warns that an expansion drive may not perform exactly like the built-in SSD—even if its stated sequential read speed exceeds 5,500 MB/s.

Compatible USB storage
A compatible SuperSpeed USB drive can hold PS4 and PS5 games. Sony’s external USB storage guidance specifies a capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB for compatible drives. PS4 games can be played directly from USB. PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or a playable compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played.
