1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your PS5 Square button isn’t working, it’s usually one of three things: a controller input glitch, a software/UI setting conflict, or a physical issue inside the DualSense button module.
This guide walks you through the fixes that most often restore Square immediately, then moves to deeper diagnostics when the problem persists. Follow the steps in order so you don’t waste time.
Goal: get Square responding again, or confidently confirm it’s a hardware fault you’ll need to repair or replace.
What a PS5 Square Button Failure Usually Means
The Square button is part of the controller’s input hardware. When it fails, the PS5 may not register presses at all, register them inconsistently, or trigger the wrong action due to settings or game mapping.

The swivel cap on the top can spin freely, it makes every repair job easy, smooth and comfortable to use for a long time.
Most “not working” cases are either a controller lockup (fixed by reset) or debris/contact wear under the button (fixed by cleaning). Software-level issues are less common, but Safe Mode helps rule them out quickly.
Prerequisites Before You Start
- A USB cable that can reliably transfer data (not just charge), plus a second controller if you have one.
- A bright light to inspect around the Square button.
- A can of compressed air (optional but helpful). Avoid liquids unless you’re comfortable with disassembly-level cleaning.
- Time to fully reboot and test after each major change.
Quick Checks That Solve Most Cases (2–5 Minutes)
1) Try pressing Square when the controller is awake
Press PS to wake the controller, then test Square on the PS5 home screen. Some glitches only show up when the controller is half-sleep or in a transition state.
2) Reseat the controller and re-pair
Turn the controller off, then on again. If you’re using Bluetooth/wireless, try disconnecting and re-pairing after a restart.
3) Test Square in at least two menus
Check Square on the home screen and again inside Settings. If Square works in Settings but not in a specific game, the issue is likely game-specific mapping or an in-game UI bug.

DualSense controllers can get stuck in an input error state. A proper reset fixes many “one button dead” problems.
Controller reset (button + power cycle)
- Turn your PS5 off, not Rest Mode.
- Unplug the DualSense from the PS5.
- Find the tiny RESET pinhole on the back of the controller.
- Use a pin or paperclip to press and hold RESET for about 5 seconds.
- Release the pin, then power the controller back on.
- Pair it to the PS5 and test the Square button again.
If Square works after this, you’re done. If it still fails, continue with settings checks and deeper system troubleshooting.
Check Button Settings and Accessibility Options
A misconfiguration or an accessibility feature can make Square appear “not working,” especially if actions are remapped.

Verify controller button behavior
- Go to Settings.
- Open Accessibility.
- Check options like Button Assignments and any accessibility remapping.
- Turn off anything that changes how buttons behave, then test Square on the home screen.
If Square works after toggling accessibility features, leave only the ones you truly need and avoid remapping that conflicts with game menus.
Test the Square Button in Different Places
Testing in multiple contexts helps you isolate whether the issue is global (controller) or app/game/UI specific.
Use the controller input test
- Go to Settings > Controllers > Buttons Assignment (or related controller input test area on your firmware).
- Look for a controller test screen that shows button presses.
- Press Square repeatedly and watch for a response indicator.
If the PS5 never registers Square presses there, it’s almost certainly a controller hardware/input problem or a controller firmware glitch that Safe Mode/update will address next.
Update DualSense Controller and PS5 System Software
Old or corrupted system/controller firmware can cause inconsistent button behavior. This won’t fix physical contact failure, but it’s worth doing before you open or repair anything.
Update PS5 system software
- Go to Settings.
- Select System > System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software.
Let the update complete and reboot fully. Then test Square again.
Firmware auto-updates for controllers
When you connect a DualSense, the PS5 can apply controller firmware updates automatically. After a system update, re-pair the controller and test again.
Use Safe Mode to Diagnose and Repair Software Issues
Safe Mode helps if the controller input is being blocked by a software state. Even when hardware is the culprit, Safe Mode gives you strong evidence fast.

Enter Safe Mode and run the best options
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps.
- Connect your DualSense via USB, then press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database (wording may vary by system software version).
- Choose Clear System Software Cache first if available.
- If still broken, run Rebuild Database.
If Square doesn’t work even in Safe Mode menus, that strongly points to a controller hardware issue (or a severe controller input failure).
Clean the Square Button Mechanism Safely
Debris under the button can stop the contacts from making reliable contact. Cleaning is often the difference between “dead” and “back to normal.”

External cleaning with compressed air
- Power off the controller.
- Hold the controller so the Square button faces downward.
- Use compressed air in short bursts around the Square key area and edges.
- Wait 30–60 seconds, then test Square.
If Square works only occasionally, cleaning can restore consistent travel and contact.
Gentle button press technique
After cleaning, press Square repeatedly at a steady rhythm. Avoid forcing the button—just confirm whether the response becomes consistent.
When not to clean further
If Square is completely dead across every menu and input test, external cleaning may not help. At that point, jump to the hardware diagnosis section rather than over-cleaning.
Remove Interference: Pairing, Bluetooth, and Other Devices
Wireless hiccups can mimic a “button not working” issue, especially if your controller loses stable connection.

Switch to USB test mode
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 using a USB cable.
- Test Square on the home screen and inside a game/menu.
If Square works over USB but not wirelessly, focus on pairing stability, distance, and interference (Wi-Fi routers, other controllers, or crowded USB hubs).

Try a different USB port and cable
- Use a different PS5 USB port (front vs back, if available).
- Try a known data-capable cable.
A charging-only cable can make controller behavior inconsistent during testing.
Edge Cases and Gotchas
Game button mapping vs global Square
If Square works in system menus but fails in one game, check the game’s control mapping. Some titles allow remaps that can disable Square functions.
Controller button replacement settings from prior use
Some controllers have custom assignments from accessibility settings or prior troubleshooting. Resetting controller settings to default can help.
Rest Mode weirdness
Rest Mode can sometimes cause partial input wake issues. If Square fails after resuming, do a full restart and test again.
Right controller works, left doesn’t (or vice versa)
If you have a second controller, test both. If Square works on Controller 2, your first controller is the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to Suspect Hardware (and What to Do Next)
If Square doesn’t register in input tests and doesn’t respond in Safe Mode, hardware is the most likely cause—usually a damaged button contact membrane, a stuck dome/metal contact, or a wiring issue to the button board.
Fast hardware confirmation
- Test Square on the PS5 home screen, in Settings, and in any controller input test screen.
- Repeat the same steps using a different DualSense.
- If Square fails only on one controller, treat it as controller hardware.
Repair or replace options
- Warranty/coverage: If the controller is covered, replacement is usually cheaper than repairs.
- Authorized repair: Sony-authorized service reduces risk of further damage.
- DIY repair: If you’re experienced, button membrane and contact repairs are possible, but they involve opening the controller and reassembly risks.
If you’re not comfortable opening the DualSense, use the “different controller” confirmation to avoid losing time on software fixes.

Common Mistakes That Waste Time
- Trying only one menu. Always test Square on the home screen and inside Settings.
- Assuming a game issue without controller input evidence.
- Resetting the controller but forgetting to fully power cycle the PS5 first.
- Using a charging-only USB cable for updates or Safe Mode testing.
- Overusing liquids around buttons. Moisture can create new contact faults.
FAQ
Why does Square work sometimes and fail other times?
Intermittent Square usually indicates a contact membrane issue, debris, or a button not making full travel. Cleaning and repeated testing after external cleaning often restore consistency.
Does cleaning the Square button void anything?
Simple external cleaning (compressed air, gentle button press) typically won’t affect warranty, but opening the controller usually can. If you’re still within warranty, consider a service option before disassembly.
Can I remap Square to another button?
On PS5, accessibility/button assignment features may allow remapping. However, if Square physically doesn’t register in controller tests or Safe Mode, remapping only works around the symptom and won’t fix the underlying hardware failure.
Will rebuilding the database fix a broken button?
Rebuilding the database won’t fix a damaged button contact. It can fix rare software states that block input, so it’s worth doing only after controller reset, input testing, and firmware updates.
How do I know the problem is the controller and not the PS5?
Test a second DualSense. If Square works on the second controller across the PS5 menus and Safe Mode, your PS5 is fine and the first controller is the likely culprit.
Bottom Line
Start with the DualSense reset (RESET pin) and quick multi-menu testing, then confirm behavior using controller input tests and Safe Mode. If Square fails there too—especially on a second PS5 test or with a second controller—you’re almost certainly dealing with a hardware/contact issue.
Use USB vs wireless tests and reliable data cables to rule out connection quirks, then clean externally with compressed air. When those don’t help, repair or replacement is the most time-efficient path.
