Buy the 1 TB PS5 Slim if you want the standard PS5 experience for less or want a disc drive included. Choose the 2 TB PS5 Pro if you value its larger built-in storage and enhanced graphics in games specifically optimized for Pro—and are comfortable with the higher price. The Pro is digital-only as sold, so disc owners should include the separately sold drive in their budget.

What the PS5 Slim gives you
Sony identifies the CFI-2100 family as the Slim model group. Its 1 TB console offers the standard PS5 feature set, including ray tracing, 4K gaming, HDR and up to 120 fps with 120 Hz output in supported circumstances. DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are available in select games. Sony notes that system software and functions reserve some SSD capacity, so the full listed storage is not available for game installations.

- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
What PS5 Pro adds—and what it does not
Sony lists a 2 TB SSD, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), optimized console performance and advanced ray tracing for PS5 Pro. Its product page says compatible games can support up to 4K/120 fps with ray tracing. Those are capability claims, not a promise that every game runs at those settings—or that every PS5 game receives the same improvement. Pro features apply to games enhanced for PS5 Pro and vary by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro product details.
Support can change as games are updated. In a March 16, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, Sony described an upgraded PSSR system-software rollout and named supported titles including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert. The post says upgraded PSSR can be used in PS5 Pro games that support it, and results may vary by title. Check the current information for the games you actually play rather than treating any list as permanent. Sony’s March 16, 2026 PSSR update.
There is no independent benchmark or controlled image-quality test here to quantify a universal frame-rate or visual-quality advantage. The practical case for Pro is strongest when your favorite games have enhancements you care about and your display can show the benefits you want.
Disc games: include the Pro add-on in the decision
PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box. Sony says its separately sold disc drive supports compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs and Blu-ray/DVD movie playback; pairing the drive with Pro during setup requires an internet connection. The drive manual specifies format and compatibility limits, so consult it if you have a particular disc collection. A current U.S. price for the drive is not established here; check Sony’s live listing before calculating the full Pro cost. Sony Disc Drive setup and support; Disc Drive instruction manual.

Storage and expansion
The Slim has a listed 1 TB SSD and the Pro 2 TB; some capacity is reserved for system software and functions. The larger Pro drive can mean less need to juggle a large installed library, but storage alone does not make it the better buy for everyone. Both Sony’s CFI-21XX Slim and CFI-71XX Pro manuals list an M.2 SSD expansion connector. Before choosing an expansion drive, check Sony’s current compatibility, capacity and installation requirements; the manuals establish the connector, not certification of any particular third-party model. Which one should you buy?
Choose the PS5 Slim if
- You want the lower listed purchase price and standard PS5 features meet your needs.
- You want a disc-drive configuration included rather than buying an add-on.
- You would rather put the price difference toward games or other priorities than pay for Pro enhancements you may not use.
Choose the PS5 Pro if
- The higher price is acceptable and you value the 2 TB built-in SSD.
- Games you play have PS5 Pro enhancements you specifically want.
- Your display and preferences make the supported visual or performance options worthwhile to you.
If you own physical games but prefer Pro
Add the separate disc drive to your total-cost comparison and account for the internet connection needed to pair it during setup. If you mostly buy or play digital games, the missing built-in drive may matter less.
If you are unsure about your TV
Sony lists 4K and high-refresh output capabilities for these consoles, but that does not mean you need to buy a new TV. Whether a display upgrade is worthwhile depends on the screen you already own and which supported features you want to see.
