PS5 Slim vs. Original PS5: Size, Cooling, Storage, and Performance

The PS5 Slim is smaller and lighter than early original models, with more advertised SSD capacity in the cited disc-model comparison. Performance specs are in the same class, and official sources do not establish a cooling or noise winner.

The PS5 Slim is smaller and lighter than early original PS5 models, and the cited Slim disc model has a larger advertised SSD: 1 TB versus 825 GB in the cited original disc model. Sony’s published CPU and GPU specifications put them in the same performance class. Sony’s official materials reviewed here do not establish that the Slim is generally cooler or quieter, so cooling is not a clear win for either console.

At a glance: which PS5 is different, and how?

This comparison uses Sony documentation for two specific disc-console models: the CFI-21xx Slim and the original CFI-1115A. PS5 dimensions and weights vary by revision, so these figures should not be treated as universal for every Slim or original PS5.

Sony says the redesigned PS5 is more than 30% smaller by volume. That is a separate product-level claim; the dimensions above are measurements for the specified model numbers. Sony’s current PS5 overview and its CFI-21xx instruction manual and CFI-1115A safety guide provide the model-specific details.

How much smaller is the PS5 Slim?

In this model-to-model comparison, the Slim disc console is about 32 mm narrower, 8 mm shorter and 44 mm shallower than the CFI-1115A original. It is also about 1.1 kg lighter. The difference can make the Slim easier to fit on a shelf or move, but measure the space you plan to use: these dimensions exclude projecting parts, and the Slim still needs room for airflow and access to cables.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Sony’s “more than 30% smaller by volume” figure describes its smaller redesign, while the listed measurements compare specific disc-console revisions. Other original PS5 revisions changed in weight, so check the CFI model number rather than assuming every original console weighs 4.2 kg.

Is the PS5 Slim more powerful?

No meaningful gaming-performance upgrade is established by the published specifications. Sony lists the Slim CFI-21xx and original CFI-1115A in the same broad hardware class: an 8-core/16-thread AMD Zen 2 CPU, a 10 TFLOPS RDNA-based graphics engine and 16 GB GDDR6 memory. Those specifications do not prove identical frame rates or load times in every game, and they are not a substitute for controlled, game-by-game testing.

Sony’s statement that performance is identical outside the disc drive refers to the original PS5 and original Digital Edition—not to a controlled test comparing the Slim with the original. Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ provides that original-edition distinction.

Does the PS5 Slim run cooler or quieter?

The official material cited here does not establish a general cooling or noise winner. Sony says a PS5 fan may temporarily run faster and sound louder during some games and applications as it cools the system. That guidance applies to fan behavior; it does not show that the Slim is quieter or hotter than an original PS5 in comparable conditions.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold separately

Sony’s account of the original console’s design discusses its cooling fan and airflow, but design descriptions are not comparative temperature or acoustic measurements. Noise can vary with the game or app, console placement, dust and the individual unit. Avoid treating a single owner report as proof of a model-wide difference.

Keep either console’s airflow clear

  • Leave at least 10 cm of free space around the console.
  • Keep vents unobstructed; avoid cramped placement and long-fiber carpet.
  • Remove dust from the vents as Sony recommends.

Does the PS5 Slim have more storage?

In the cited disc-model comparison, yes: the CFI-21xx Slim has a 1 TB custom SSD, while the CFI-1115A original has an 825 GB custom SSD. These are advertised capacities; some storage is reserved for console administration and system software, so free space available for games is lower on both.

If your library outgrows the built-in drive, both console generations support compatible M.2 SSD expansion. Sony’s M.2 SSD installation and compatibility guide specifies capacity and physical-size requirements, says M.2 SATA drives are unsupported, and advises adding a heat-dissipation mechanism—such as a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet—if the drive lacks one. Sony does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work, so check the current requirements before buying.

Which one should you choose?

Because the published hardware class is similar, the choice is mainly about fit, storage, disc use, condition and price—not a documented performance jump. Compare the exact CFI model and drive configuration, especially if you buy used or already own disc games.

  • Choose the Slim if you want a smaller, lighter console and the cited 1 TB model’s extra advertised built-in storage is useful to you.
  • Consider an original PS5 if its condition and price suit you better, or it fits your existing setup and disc-game collection. Check its revision and storage capacity before purchase.
  • For either model, factor in whether you need a disc drive and whether a compatible M.2 SSD is part of your storage plan.
