Buy the PS5 Slim Disc Edition if you own or expect to use game discs, or want to play movies on disc. Choose the Digital Edition if downloads suit you and you do not need a drive—especially when it costs less where you live. If you might want discs later, compare the Digital Edition’s price plus Sony’s compatible detachable drive with the Disc Edition’s local price; there is no universal savings winner.
What is different between the PS5 Slim Disc and Digital editions?
The key difference is the disc drive. Sony describes the Digital Edition as “an all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” The Disc Edition includes a drive and can play PS5 and supported PS4 games on Blu-ray discs; it also plays downloaded digital games. Sony’s US PS5 comparison lists 1TB of storage for the Disc Edition and 825GB for the Digital Edition.

Those capacities are Sony’s US listings, not a guarantee that every regional model or revision has the same storage. Check the exact model sold in your market. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual describes shared core hardware, including a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU and 16GB of GDDR6 memory, so the choice between these configurations is chiefly about disc access, listed storage, and price—not a claim that one is categorically faster. Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual also lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector.
Which edition fits your games and media?
Choose the Disc Edition if you use physical media
- You own PS5 or supported PS4 game discs and want to keep playing them.
- You expect to buy, borrow, or otherwise use physical game copies. Whether discs cost less depends on the specific game and where you shop, so compare the prices you would actually pay.
- You want the option to play movies on disc. Sony says the drive supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD formats; its manual also lists PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and supported PS4 Blu-ray game discs. Check Sony’s detachable Disc Drive manual for formats and device details.
Choose the Digital Edition if downloads are enough
- You are comfortable buying and downloading games digitally and do not need game or movie discs.
- Its local price is lower than the Disc Edition’s, and the difference matters more to you than the option to use discs.
- You are comfortable with the storage capacity listed for the exact regional model you are buying.
How to compare the total cost
Compare current prices in your own market rather than relying on an old launch price or a deal from another country. If you might need a drive later, include its separate cost in the Digital Edition total:

Digital Edition price + compatible detachable drive price = cost for disc access
Sony says its detachable drive is intended for specified slim Digital Edition model groups, including CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and requires an internet connection for initial pairing. Confirm compatibility with the exact console model before buying the accessory. Sony’s product information does not establish a general lifetime-cost saving for either edition, and disc prices are not always lower. Compare prices for the games and buying channels you plan to use.

How the January 2028 notice affects the decision
Sony’s US PS5 comparison says that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be offered for purchase in digital format only; it also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is a notice on Sony’s US page, so check your local PlayStation page for whether it applies to your region. It does not remove the Disc Edition’s value for existing disc libraries, supported PS4 discs, or movie playback.
