An exploit is a way to take advantage of a software vulnerability. A jailbreak typically chains exploits and other components to gain broader access. The reported kernel access is significant, but it does not establish that all PS5 models, editions, payloads, or online services work. Nor does the report establish that Relapse provides hypervisor control, Linux support, piracy, or a universal homebrew environment.

Which PS5 firmware can be jailbroken?
For Relapse, the range reported by Tom’s Hardware is firmware 7.00 through 13.60. Treat that as a dated report, not a guarantee of compatibility for an individual console or a promise that the range remains current: Sony can release new system software, and exploit support may depend on details beyond the version number.

The UMTX project is separate from Relapse. Its repository documents CVE-2024-43102 and describes its own constraints, including limited firmware support and no support for firmware 6.00 and later without another WebKit exploit. Those limits do not describe Relapse, and the projects’ ranges should not be combined. PS5Dev’s UMTX repository
Update now or preserve a reported exploit window?
Tom’s Hardware said firmware 14.00 had arrived and that some game updates were asking for it. That does not mean every game requires 14.00; it does mean a console on older software may miss some current game updates or features. Conversely, moving outside the reported Relapse range could mean losing compatibility with the exploit as described in that report. The source does not establish whether a later Relapse release will support newer firmware.

There is no risk-free universal choice. If you value official updates, current game features, and a supported console experience, use Sony’s official update process. If you are evaluating security research, check the exact installed firmware and the project’s current documentation before changing anything, and understand that no source cited here establishes a safe downgrade path. Compatibility is tied to the firmware conditions an exploit supports. If an update moves the console beyond the reported 7.00–13.60 range, that report does not show the exploit working on the new version. It also does not prove compatibility can never be added later. Do not assume an update can be reversed: Sony’s licence bars downgrading, and its support information warns against unofficial system software files.

Sony’s official PS5 system software support page explains how to update or reinstall system software. Reinstalling deletes console data, so it is not a casual recovery step; modified systems may also face warranty or repair consequences under Sony’s terms and policies. The presenter’s analysis helps explain why exploiting a PS5 is technically difficult; it is not an official Sony statement and does not show that any particular exploit is impossible. Sony’s UK product security page lists April 2030 as a minimum security update period for the PS5 model numbers named there and provides information about reporting vulnerabilities. What to check before making a decision
- Installed firmware: Check the system software version shown in the console’s settings, then compare it with the dated range in the report.
- Your priorities: Weigh exploit experimentation against official patches, game updates, online features, and the possibility of warranty or repair complications.
- Exact project: Confirm you are reading Relapse documentation rather than UMTX or another project; one project’s compatibility limits do not apply automatically to another.
