Sony’s Quick Spectral Super Resolution is an AI-upscaling option designed for supported games on the standard PS5. AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a broader, versioned technology family used in games on compatible PC hardware and other platforms. Sony links upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro and AMD FSR 4 to work under Project Amethyst, but that does not establish that base-PS5 QSSR is identical to FSR 4—or that one universally looks better.
What is QSSR on PS5?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, is the name Sony gave its new AI-upscaling performance tier for the standard PS5 in an announcement dated October 1, 2026. Sony says it uses an optimized neural-network architecture and an implementation adapted to the PS5’s performance constraints. The aim is to improve image detail and stability while fitting the console’s hardware budget. Those are Sony’s qualitative claims, not results from an independent matched benchmark. Sony’s QSSR announcement identifies Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use it.

QSSR is an upscaler: it helps produce an output image from a lower-resolution rendered image. It is not, by itself, a promise that every game will render at a particular internal resolution, output resolution, or frame rate. Those details depend on the game and its implementation.

FSR is a family of AMD technologies, not one fixed upscaling method. AMD’s current product page distinguishes spatial upscaling in FSR 1, temporal upscaling in later generations, and newer machine-learning-based upscaling. The broader FSR Redstone suite also includes separate features such as frame generation, ray regeneration, and radiance caching. A game may support one FSR version or feature without supporting the others. AMD’s FSR Technologies page describes current features and compatibility; those details can change as AMD updates products and drivers.

For example, AMD says its ML-based FSR upscaling is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. That compatibility statement concerns the ML-based feature described by AMD, not every FSR version or feature. Games also need suitable integration: supported options may appear in a game’s own settings, and AMD says some FSR 3.1-integrated games can be updated through AMD Software.
Is QSSR the same as AMD FSR?
No equivalence is established. Sony says upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro grew out of its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, and that PC gamers have seen benefits of the collaboration through FSR 4. That is evidence of a shared development relationship—not proof that QSSR, upgraded PSSR, and every FSR implementation use the same model, code, feature set, performance budget, or image-quality settings. Sony’s announcement describes the upgraded PSSR rollout as a PS5 Pro feature, while QSSR is the separate performance tier announced for standard PS5. A game-specific example illustrates why the platform and version matter: IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses upgraded PSSR by default on PS5 Pro, while other platforms use FSR 3.1.5. That is a description of distinct platform implementations, not a controlled image-quality comparison. IO Interactive’s technical account identifies the choices for that game.
Does QSSR work on every PS5 game?
No. Sony named two initial QSSR games—Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei—and said it would make the library broadly available to PlayStation developers. That means developers can adopt it; it does not mean every existing or future PS5 game automatically uses it. Look for an announcement, patch note, or in-game graphics setting for the particular title. Support can vary by game and update.

Which looks better, QSSR or FSR?
There is no universal winner established by the available official statements. They do not provide a matched QSSR-versus-FSR test using the same game scene, hardware conditions, output resolution, and graphics settings. Nor can a general FSR result be applied to every version: spatial, temporal, and ML-based upscaling are different implementations.
For a meaningful comparison, identify the implementation and keep the test conditions as close as possible:

- Platform: standard PS5, PS5 Pro, or a specific PC graphics card.
- Upscaler: QSSR, original or upgraded PSSR, or the exact FSR version and feature.
- Game support and settings: confirm the game has integrated the option, and note its graphics or performance mode.
- Image conditions: compare the same output resolution and comparable rendering settings. Inspect fine detail and stability, including shimmer, flicker, and artifacts during motion.
- Performance measures: separate upscaling from frame generation and other features that can affect reported frame rate.
AMD’s published performance figures for FSR Redstone use an RX 9070 XT comparison against native 4K with frame generation enabled in the described results. They are not a QSSR comparison and should not be treated as one.
What should you expect in practice?
On standard PS5, QSSR matters only in games whose developers enable it. On PC, “FSR support” is incomplete information unless you know which FSR version or feature the game offers and whether the hardware supports it. On PS5 Pro, upgraded PSSR is a separate implementation from base-PS5 QSSR. For any visual or performance judgment, the useful comparison is the same game on the named platform, with the exact upscaler, output resolution, and graphics mode specified.
