PS5 PSSR vs. AMD FSR: How Console Upscaling Differs

PS5 Pro PSSR and AMD FSR share development roots, but differ in platform, support and implementation. Here’s how to compare them fairly.

PS5 Pro PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for compatible PS5 Pro games; AMD FSR is a broader family of gaming technologies that developers can integrate into supported games and hardware. The two now share development roots through Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration, but they are not interchangeable products. Which looks or performs better depends on the particular game, implementation, settings and hardware.

What’s the difference between PSSR and FSR?

Comparison PS5 Pro PSSR AMD FSR
What it is Sony’s machine-learning image upscaler, introduced as a PS5 Pro feature. Sony describes it as analyzing game imagery pixel by pixel as it reconstructs visuals. AMD’s suite of game technologies. Depending on the generation and game integration, it can include upscaling, frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching.
Where it runs On PS5 Pro, in games with compatible PSSR support. Some supported existing games can use the upgraded version through a console setting. In selected games that developers integrate with a particular FSR feature or version. Supported hardware varies by feature and generation.
Who controls support Sony provides the console feature; individual games still need compatible implementation or support for the relevant system option. Game developers choose whether and how to integrate FSR. Compatibility depends on the specific feature, version and hardware.
Relationship The upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration. Sony describes AMD FSR 4 upscaling as another result of that collaboration, not as an identical deployment to PS5 Pro PSSR.

Both technologies can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, potentially reducing the work required to render every pixel at the output resolution. But “FSR” does not name one fixed upscaler, and a shared development relationship does not mean that a PC game’s FSR option and a PS5 Pro game’s PSSR implementation use the same support path, tuning or settings.

Does PS5 Pro use FSR?

PSSR is Sony’s named upscaling feature on PS5 Pro; it is not simply the console version of AMD FSR. Sony announced a deeper graphics and gameplay technology collaboration with AMD in December 2024, then said in February 2026 that the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network grew from the companies’ Project Amethyst work. Sony also pointed to AMD FSR 4 upscaling as a PC manifestation of that collaboration. Sony’s collaboration announcement and its upgraded PSSR announcement describe shared roots, not a promise that the two products are identical.

For a player, the practical distinction is where to look for support: check the PS5 Pro game’s PSSR support and console options, or check a PC game’s listed FSR generation and supported features. A label alone does not tell you how a particular game will look.

What changed with upgraded PSSR?

Sony announced upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro on February 27, 2026, saying it would roll out globally in the following weeks and naming Resident Evil Requiem as the first game to use the new version. Sony described the revision as a different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm, with Project Amethyst as its development root.

On March 16, 2026, Sony said the upgrade was rolling out to supported games, named titles including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert, and described an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” system setting for compatible existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. Sony says results vary by title, so current game patches and the console’s available setting are more useful than assuming every PSSR game uses the newer version. See Sony’s March 2026 rollout details.

Sony’s launch announcement for PS5 Pro said the console had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, and could deliver up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. These are Sony’s figures from its 2024 announcement, not independent tests comparing PSSR with FSR. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement gives the original context.

Why FSR support depends on the version

AMD presents FSR as a changing suite, rather than a single upscaling mode. Its current overview includes upscaling alongside separate features such as frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching. These functions do different jobs: upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render, while frame generation creates additional frames. A game may support one FSR feature without supporting the whole suite. AMD’s FSR technologies overview is the place to check current feature descriptions.

Hardware compatibility also varies by generation and feature. AMD’s current product information lists ML-based FSR upscaling availability for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. That is a forward-looking statement for the newer ML-based feature, not a claim that all prior FSR versions are unavailable on older hardware; verify AMD’s current compatibility details before relying on the planned date. AMD’s current FSR page describes the feature and support information.

Which upscaler looks better?

There is no universal winner established by the available official material. Image quality and performance depend on the game’s implementation, its internal render resolution, output resolution, graphics settings and target hardware. A result from one title—or one FSR generation—cannot establish how every PSSR or FSR implementation compares.

Ubisoft’s explanation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro illustrates why context matters: it discusses reconstructing a 2160p image from a 1080p input and the trade-offs between render resolution, performance, clarity and artifacts, and reports the studio’s findings against TAA in that game. That is a title-specific account, not a controlled PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark. Read Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro update explanation for its scope.

How to make a fair comparison

  • Use the same game and scene. Compare matching locations, camera views and motion; different scenes can expose different reconstruction problems.
  • Match output and performance settings. Check the selected quality or performance mode, output resolution and any available upscaler options.
  • Identify the exact implementation. Record the game version and, on PC, the specific FSR generation or feature. On PS5 Pro, check whether the title supports upgraded PSSR or the optional system setting.
  • Inspect both stills and motion. Look for fine-detail clarity, temporal stability, shimmering, ghosting and other motion artifacts, as well as actual frame-rate behavior.
  • Keep hardware and settings in view. A PC comparison with one graphics card and settings does not automatically predict results on PS5 Pro or another FSR-capable system.

Is QSSR another name for PSSR?

No. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for selected original PS5 games, initially naming Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony described QSSR as a streamlined performance tier of AI upscaling. It is related PlayStation context, not a new name for PS5 Pro PSSR. See Sony’s QSSR announcement.
