PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s AI-based upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It reconstructs a higher-resolution output from the image a game renders, which can give developers room to balance visual detail and performance. It does not mean every game renders natively at 4K or gets the same frame-rate boost.
What is PSSR on PS5 Pro?
PSSR is an upscaler built for PS5 Pro. Sony Lead Architect Mark Cerny describes it as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” In practical terms, the game first renders an image at an internal resolution; PSSR then reconstructs it for a larger output resolution. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement explains the feature and its intended role.

Upscaling is not the same as rendering every pixel at the final output resolution. The game’s internal resolution may be lower, and can vary with the scene or graphics mode. The quality of the result depends on the input image, the game’s implementation and the reconstruction itself.

How can PSSR affect image quality and performance?
More performance headroom from fewer rendered pixels
Rendering fewer pixels can reduce the work required to produce a frame. A developer may use that headroom for a higher frame rate, more demanding effects or another graphics improvement. The upscaler itself does not guarantee a performance gain: developers choose the rendering resolution and settings, and the demands of a game vary by scene.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Ubisoft’s explanation of its PS5 Pro work on Assassin’s Creed Shadows puts the trade-off plainly: lowering render resolution can result in higher frame rates, but may reduce image clarity or introduce visual artifacts. The game can also use dynamic resolution scaling, changing its render resolution as GPU demands change. Ubisoft’s technical account describes that implementation in its own title context.
Reconstruction can improve or compromise visible detail
A useful way to judge an upscaler is to look at fine detail and how stable the image remains during movement. Foliage, thin lines and other small features can be difficult to reconstruct; depending on the game and scene, you may notice shimmer, flicker or other artifacts. Sony’s March 2026 rollout announcement says the upgraded version aims to improve image stability and fine-detail clarity, while noting that results vary by title.
There is no single PSSR image-quality result or fixed performance percentage that applies to every game. Sony’s and developers’ descriptions are not independent, controlled comparisons. When evaluating a particular game, consider its graphics modes, disclosed internal or dynamic resolution, target and sustained frame rate, image stability, fine-detail reconstruction, and which effects are enabled.

On February 27, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR with a substantially different approach to its neural network and overall algorithm. Sony named Resident Evil Requiem as the first announced game to use it. At the time of that announcement, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 PS5 Pro titles; that is a dated figure, not a current exhaustive support count. Sony’s announcement provides those details.
In a March 16, 2026 rollout article, Sony said the upgraded version improves image stability, fine-detail clarity and performance consistency, with results varying by game. Remedy Entertainment Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto described its effect as improving “image upscaling quality and stability.” These are Sony and participating-developer statements, rather than independent lab findings. Sony’s rollout announcement names examples of supported or incoming games, including Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3 and Rise of the Ronin.

How do you enable the upgraded PSSR setting?
Sony said players could enable the enhanced PSSR system setting for existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. The option is not a guarantee that every game will use the upgrade or look better with it enabled.
- On PS5 Pro, open Settings.
- Open Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Choose the enhanced PSSR image-quality setting, if it is available on your system.
- Launch a supported game and compare its image in the scenes and mode you normally play. If you see unexpected visual effects, Sony says you can turn the setting off.
Exact title support can change through system software and game patches. Check the game’s current patch notes and in-game graphics options for title-specific support; an announcement list from March 2026 should not be treated as a guaranteed current inventory.
Is PSSR the same as 4K?
No. PSSR is an upscaling method, not a rendering resolution. It can reconstruct a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution game image, but the result does not establish that the game rendered natively at 4K. A game’s actual internal resolution and output depend on its implementation and selected graphics mode.
Does PSSR work on the regular PS5?
PSSR is the PS5 Pro technology. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate AI upscaling library for the standard PS5. Sony described QSSR as a lower-performance-tier technology; it is not PSSR made available unchanged on base PS5. Sony’s QSSR announcement distinguishes the two.
