Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. Sony launched the PS5 Pro as a disc-less console. The compatible Disc Drive is an optional accessory and is not included in the console box. What the PS5 Pro Disc Drive can play
Physical PS5 games
With the drive attached, Sony says you can use physical PS5 game discs. Insert a game disc and the console begins installing it automatically; after installation, select the title from the Games home screen. Sony documents this basic workflow in its PS5 getting-started guide.
The cited setup guidance explains installation but does not define the complete disc-presence or licence check that may apply after installation. Therefore, do not assume that installing a disc means the game can always be launched with the disc removed; keep the disc and follow the on-screen prompt if the console requests it.
Supported PS4 discs
The accessory also supports supported PS4 physical discs. “Supported” matters: PS5 compatibility is title-specific, and Sony directs owners to check whether an individual PS4 game is playable on PS5 consoles. Use the company’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide and the relevant game information before assuming an older disc will work.

Movie discs
Sony lists three movie formats for the drive:
- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
- Blu-ray
- DVD
This makes the accessory more than a game reader for households that still use a physical movie collection. The official list does not promise support for every other optical-disc format, so treat those three named formats as the confirmed scope.
Compatibility details before you install
Check the console and cover group
Sony’s installation documentation covers the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups, which include the PS5 Pro family. The Pro-specific instructions identify a drive-and-cover combination for the console and warn that cover sets made for older CFI-1000 models and slim CFI-2000 systems are not compatible with the Pro. Do not swap an old side cover or assume that a cover from another PS5 revision will fit.
For model illustrations and the current compatibility list, use Sony’s compatibility guide for PS5 Pro consoles. Read the label on the console and match it to the instructions rather than relying on appearance alone.
Have the supplied parts ready
The setup procedure uses the Disc Drive, its supplied cover, and the long feet identified in Sony’s instructions. Keep those parts together until installation is complete. The guide’s references to model-specific feet and covers are why a previously owned accessory set should not be treated as interchangeable.

An internet connection is required when the drive and console are paired during initial setup. Sony’s wording establishes that setup requirement; it does not say that a permanent internet connection is required every time you play a disc. Do not interpret the pairing instruction as proof of an ongoing online requirement.
How to install the Disc Drive on a PS5 Pro
Use Sony’s illustrated Disc Drive setup instructions for the exact diagrams. The process, in the order Sony gives it, is:
- Turn the console off completely. Do not begin with the PS5 Pro in Rest Mode.
- Unplug the console and allow it to cool. Disconnect the power and other cables, then wait until the system is cool enough to handle.
- Place the console on a soft surface. This gives you a stable work area while protecting the exterior panels.
- Remove the model-appropriate feet and cover. Follow the CFI-2000/7000 instructions rather than using covers from a CFI-1000 or slim CFI-2000 system.
- Align the drive. Position the drive clips with the matching holes on the console.
- Press until the clips click. The click indicates that the drive is seated in the attachment points described by Sony.
- Attach the supplied cover and long feet. Use the parts that came with the compatible drive-and-cover set.
- Reconnect the cables and power on. Once the hardware is secured, reconnect the console.
- Complete online pairing. Connect the console to the internet so the drive can be paired during its first setup.
If your console revision or the parts in your package do not match the illustrations, stop and check the official guide before applying force. A mismatch is more likely to be a model or cover issue than a reason to improvise.

Playing a physical game after installation
Insert and install
Insert the PS5 or supported PS4 game disc with the console running. Sony’s getting-started instructions say the game installs automatically. Installation may take time and use storage on the console; wait for the process shown on the screen to finish.
Launch from Games home
After the installation begins, the game appears on the Games home screen. Select its icon to continue. If the console asks for the disc, insert it and leave it available; the official excerpt confirms automatic installation and selection from Games home but does not spell out every licence or disc-presence scenario.
Check a PS4 title before relying on it
A PS4 disc is not automatically a guarantee of compatibility. Search the individual title in Sony’s PS5 playability information and check any edition-specific notes. This is especially important when you are deciding whether buying the separate drive will preserve a particular PS4 collection.

The right choice depends on the media you already own, not on a performance difference between two PS5 Pro configurations. Use this checklist:

Common setup and compatibility problems
The drive will not pair
Confirm that the console is connected to the internet during the initial setup, because Sony requires online access for the pairing step. If you skipped that step, reconnect the console and repeat the setup flow shown in the official guide. The available documentation does not establish that an internet connection is needed for every later disc launch.
The cover or feet do not fit
Stop rather than forcing the parts. Recheck the console’s model group and use the drive’s supplied cover and long feet. Sony specifically says older CFI-1000 and slim CFI-2000 cover sets are not compatible with PS5 Pro.
A PS4 disc does not work
Check the individual game in Sony’s PS5 compatibility information. The drive supports supported PS4 discs, not an unrestricted promise that every PS4 release will run. Confirm that you have the correct edition and that Sony lists it as playable.
The game does not appear as expected
Reinsert the disc and allow the automatic installation process to complete. Then look on Games home for the installed title. If the console displays a request for the disc, keep the disc inserted; Sony’s getting-started material does not provide a broader guarantee about launching without it.

The official documentation is clear on the hardware’s core role: PS5 Pro is sold without an internal drive, the detachable accessory is optional, supported PS5 and PS4 physical discs can be used with it, and three named movie formats are supported. It is also clear that initial pairing is online and that installation is model-specific.
It does not provide a universal promise that every PS4 disc is playable, a complete statement of disc-presence behaviour after installation, a permanent internet requirement for gameplay, or a stable worldwide price and stock position. Keeping those limits in mind prevents a purchase based on assumptions the manufacturer has not made.
