PS5 Pro is a third option for players whose games and display can make use of its supported improvements.
What Sony has—and has not—announced about PS6
Sony’s latest cited investor-relations Q&A says decisions about next-generation timing and pricing have not been made. Sony has confirmed continued investment in the next generation, but has not announced a release date, price, final name, or specifications. Waiting therefore means postponing a purchase with no confirmed launch window—not waiting for a known, short interval. Sony’s FY2025 Q4 Q&A and its Game & Network Services Q&A are the relevant official statements.

There is no reliable basis in those materials for treating any rumored successor year, price, or specification as official. The practical comparison is between playing on a current PS5 now and continuing with the console you already have while Sony’s plans remain undecided.

| Choice | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your current console | Your existing system works well and you are not missing games or features you want. | You defer spending, but also defer any upgrade until you decide the wait is no longer worthwhile. |
| Buy a standard PS5 | You want access to current PS5 games now and your present hardware does not meet your needs. | You pay for a current-generation console without knowing when its successor will arrive. |
| Buy PS5 Pro | You already play PS5 games, value supported-game improvements, and have a display that can show them. | It costs more than the standard models, and its enhancements depend on game support. |
| Wait for a future PlayStation | Your current setup is adequate and you are comfortable waiting without a confirmed successor window or price. | You cannot plan around an official launch date, price, or specification because Sony has announced none. |
How much do current PS5 models cost?
Sony’s recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026 are listed below. They are suggested prices from Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement, not guaranteed current store prices; retailer pricing and availability can differ. Check local retailers for other countries.

Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement gives the regional recommended prices. Its US purchase page identifies a 1TB disc PS5, an 825GB Digital Edition, and a 2TB PS5 Pro. Sony Direct’s US listing showed $649, $599, and $899 for those models when accessed, illustrating why a store listing should not be confused with the separately stated recommended prices. For current availability, see PlayStation Direct and Sony’s PS5 purchase page.
When PS5 Pro is worth considering
PS5 Pro is an in-generation performance option, not an announced successor. Sony lists a 2TB SSD, Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-driven upscaling feature. Sony says compatible games can combine 60Hz or 120Hz play, ray tracing, and AI-enhanced 4K, but availability and the resulting enhancements vary by game. Check the titles you actually play in Sony’s PS5 Pro feature information before paying extra.

At PS5 Pro’s 2024 introduction, Sony described its GPU as having 67% more compute units and memory that was 28% faster than the then-current PS5, with rendering up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s manufacturer claims from its launch announcement, not independent test results or a guarantee of a particular improvement in every game. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement explains the comparison.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Consider Pro if you already play PS5 games, your display can show the relevant improvements, and the supported games you care about offer features you value.
- A standard PS5 or keeping your current console may make more sense if you do not play enhanced titles, your display cannot show the differences you want, or the price premium is not worthwhile to you.
Choose disc or digital with your library in mind
Sony describes its US standard PS5 as a disc-capable 1TB console and the Digital Edition as an 825GB all-digital console. Its US purchase page says: “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” If you own physical games, verify the exact console configuration before buying and consider whether you expect to keep using that library. The statement is on Sony’s US PS5 purchase page.

A practical decision checklist
- Assess what you have. If your current console works and runs the games you want, keeping it avoids spending while Sony’s next-generation timing remains unannounced.
- Decide whether you need PS5 games now. If current PS5 titles or features are the reason to upgrade, compare the standard PS5 models against your budget rather than treating an unannounced successor as imminent.
- Check Pro compatibility before choosing Pro. Look at Sony’s supported-game information and your display’s capabilities; Pro features do not apply uniformly across games.
- Factor in physical games. Match the console configuration to the discs you own and Sony’s stated change for newly released games from January 2028.
- Set your tolerance for uncertainty. If you can comfortably continue with your current setup, waiting is reasonable. If the current console is limiting what you can play, a current PS5 purchase is a decision based on needs you have today—not on a predicted PS6 launch.
