A PS5 that shows a steady white light but won’t complete startup is usually a power/boot handshake issue—not always a “dead console” problem. The good news: most fixes you can do at home are safe, fast, and repeatable.
This guide focuses on the exact scenario you described: the console displays a white light yet doesn’t properly turn on (no video, no menu, or no response). Follow the solutions in order, because each one targets a different cause.

What the White Light Means on PS5
On PS5, a white light generally indicates the console is receiving power and attempting to boot. When startup stalls, you might get no image, a black screen, or the system appears “stuck” even though the light stays on.

Depending on the model and settings, this can happen during HDMI handshake, Rest Mode resume, database corruption, or a failing power connection.

Before You Start: Safety and Quick Checks
- Unplug before inspecting: If you need to move cables or check the AC adapter/power cord, switch off first and unplug the console from the wall.
- Try a known-good HDMI port: If possible, swap HDMI ports on the TV and ensure the TV input is set correctly.
- Listen for signs of life: After startup attempts, do you hear the fan spin up? Any disk sound? Any controller response?
- Check your controller: If the PS5 is booting, the controller often connects. If it won’t, that points more toward a boot/power issue.
If you’re using a monitor instead of a TV, confirm it supports your PS5 video output settings (4K/60, HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1, HDCP compatibility).
5 Working Solutions for PS5 Not Turning On White Light
1) Do a Hard Power Reset (Unplug + Hold Power)
This is the most reliable first step when the white light stays on but the system won’t finish booting. It clears a stuck power state.
- Press and hold the PS5 power button on the front until it beeps and turns off (white light goes out).
- Unplug the PS5 power cable from the wall (and from the console if it’s detachable).
- Wait 60 seconds to fully discharge the power rails.
- Plug it back in and press the power button once.
- Wait 2–3 minutes. If it boots, you should see video output and the PS5 logo.
If it still won’t complete startup, move on. Don’t repeat rapid power cycling—one full cycle is enough.

- Turn off the TV/monitor completely.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from the PS5, then plug it back firmly.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV (for example, switch from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2).
- If you use an AV receiver or HDMI switch, bypass it temporarily: connect PS5 directly to the TV.
- Turn on the TV first, select the correct HDMI input, then power on the PS5.
If you see the PS5 sound/menus but video is blank, this often improves with Safe Mode settings (Solution #3 or #5).
3) Force a Safe Mode Boot and Rebuild Database
When the system light is on but the boot process won’t complete, rebuilding the database can fix corrupted system data and stuck startup loops.
- With the PS5 fully powered off, unplug it from power for 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Press and hold the power button on the console.
- Hold until you hear two beeps: one when you first press, and a second beep about 7 seconds later.
- Release the button. The PS5 should boot into Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller via USB and press the PS button.
- Select Rebuild Database.
Rebuild can take time—often 5–30 minutes depending on storage size. If the system keeps failing during reboot, keep going with Solution #4 and #5, then consider support.
4) Check Your Power Source and Cable (Try a Different Outlet)
A PS5 can appear to “start” (white light) while still failing under unstable or insufficient power. This includes damaged AC cords, loose plugs, or power strips with surge protection.

- Power Your Devices with the Perfect Reach: Select from multiple lengths to find your ideal match; this cord ensures safe, stable power for your game console, sound bar, speaker system and more
- Remove any power strips/surge protectors. Plug the PS5 directly into a wall outlet.
- Try a different wall outlet in the home.
- Inspect the power cable ends for bent pins, loose fit, or frayed insulation.
- If you have access to another compatible power cable/adapter that fits your PS5 model, test it.
- Leave it plugged in for 1–2 minutes after connecting, then try powering on again.
If the white light turns on briefly and then shuts off, or it cycles repeatedly, that’s a strong sign of a power delivery issue.
5) Turn Off Rest Mode and Change Video Output Settings
Rest Mode resume and mismatched video settings (especially after firmware updates) can cause a “white light, no display” boot loop. Changing these settings is often the difference between a black screen and a normal boot.
- Boot into Safe Mode (use the double-beep method from Solution #3).
- Choose Change Video Output.
- Select a safer option when prompted (for example, set output to a lower compatibility mode if you see a list of resolutions/refresh rates).
- After video works, go to the PS5 settings path: Settings > System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
- Set it to Do not put in Rest Mode (temporarily) and test normal power-on behavior.
If your PS5 only boots when connected through a specific HDMI mode, keep a stable configuration for troubleshooting. Once stable, you can re-enable Rest Mode gradually.

Common Mistakes That Prolong the Problem
- Keeping the same HDMI chain: If you use an AV receiver or HDMI switch, it can mask the real issue. Test direct-to-TV.
- Repeated unplug attempts in seconds: Power rails need a full discharge window. Do one proper 60-second cycle instead.
- Ignoring Safe Mode: If video won’t appear, Safe Mode is your best way to correct database or output settings.
- Assuming “white light” means it’s fully on: White light can indicate partial power only; boot can still be stuck.

FAQs
Does a white light mean my PS5 is broken?
No. A steady white light usually means the PS5 is powered but may be stuck during boot. Many cases resolve after a hard power reset, Safe Mode, or HDMI/video output changes.
How long should I wait after pressing power?
If the PS5 is attempting to boot, it can take 1–3 minutes to show video, especially after rebuild steps. If it stays white with no progress, try the next solution rather than waiting indefinitely.
Will rebuilding the database delete my games?
No. Rebuild Database typically reorganizes system data. Your games and saved data should remain, but it’s still smart to keep regular cloud backups via PlayStation Plus.

What if my PS5 is in a boot loop—white light then nothing?
Start with Solution #1 (hard power reset) and Solution #4 (direct wall outlet). If Safe Mode is accessible, use Solution #3 (Rebuild Database) and #5 (Change Video Output).
Should I try a different HDMI cable?
Yes. A damaged cable can cause “no signal” or handshake failure. If you have a spare high-quality HDMI cable, test it during Solution #2.
Bottom Line
A PS5 showing a white light but not turning on fully is often fixable with power reset, Safe Mode, and correct video/power settings. Work through the five solutions in order to isolate whether the issue is HDMI/video output, a stuck power state, database corruption, or unstable power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Safe Mode won’t load after power checks, that’s when hardware support is the fastest path to a real resolution. Document what you tried, and you’ll avoid repeating steps with support.
