Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your PS5 isn’t reading a disc, it’s usually one of three things: a disc problem (scratches, dirt, or unsupported format), a software/database hiccup, or a disc drive issue. The fixes range from a full power cycle to Safe Mode steps that often restore disc recognition.
This guide is written for PS5 owners in 2024 and focuses on repeatable troubleshooting you can do at home—without guesswork. Follow the steps in order; each one either rules out common causes or gets you closer to the real fault.

Common symptoms and what they point to
Different behaviors often map to different causes. For example, a disc that spins but never “mounts” usually points to media read errors or drive calibration, while a disc that works after a reboot suggests a software/database issue.
| What you see | Common cause | First fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 says it can’t read the disc | Disc dirt/scratches, region/format mismatch, or damaged installation | Re-seat the disc + inspect/clean it |
| Disc ejects immediately | Drive obstruction, disc not seated properly, or firmware/software glitch | Full power cycle, then test another disc |
| Disc gets recognized but game won’t install/run | Corrupt install data or database issues | Rebuild database |
| All discs fail after working previously | Drive hardware wear, calibration drift, or system issue | Update system software + rebuild database, then repair if needed |
| Only one specific disc fails | That disc’s condition (scratches/damage) or fingerprint/film buildup | Try a different disc and replace/clean the bad one |
Before you troubleshoot: prerequisites and quick checks
Before you change settings or enter Safe Mode, gather the basics. You’ll want to avoid “fixing” a hardware problem with software steps—and you’ll want to avoid damaging discs further.

- Power off fully when directed (don’t just rest mode).
- Confirm you have the right system model: PS5 Disc Edition hardware uses a disc drive; Digital Edition cannot read discs.
Step-by-step troubleshooting (least effort to most effective)
Work through these steps in order. Each step is quick to attempt and narrows down the problem.
1) Power cycle the PS5 completely
Bad disc reads can come from a stuck drive state or a software hang. A full power cycle clears that.
- Save/exit any game and close everything.
- Press and hold the PS button on the controller for the quick menu.
- Select Power → Turn Off PS5.
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the PS5.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in, then turn the PS5 on and try the disc again.
2) Re-seat the disc and inspect it in good light
A disc that’s slightly misaligned can cause read failures or repeated eject attempts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Eject (or restart and eject safely if needed).
- Remove the disc by holding the edges.
- Inspect the data side (the side with fine label/print) under light.
- Look for deep scratches, warping, cracks, or heavy smudges.
- Reinsert the disc firmly and try again.
3) Clean the disc correctly (and what not to do)
Cleaning is often the difference between “unreadable” and “works again.” Use the gentlest method that removes grime.
- Do: wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber) using light pressure.
- Do: wipe from the center of the disc outward in straight lines.
- Don’t: use circular scrubbing (that can spread micro-scratches).
- Don’t: use household glass cleaners, bleach, or abrasive disc polish.
If the disc has a visible fingerprint film, cleaning typically fixes it. If there are deep scratches you can feel with a fingernail, software steps won’t fix that—replacement usually is the move.

- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
4) Confirm the disc is supported (region, format, and authenticity)
PS5 is region-locked for some media formats, and disc reading can fail with mismatched regions or problematic copies.
- Check the game disc packaging for region and intended PS5 compatibility.
- Make sure it’s a PS5 game disc if that’s what you’re trying to play.
- For movies/other media, confirm the disc format is supported by your PS5 model/region.
- Consider authenticity: counterfeit or badly pressed discs often fail to read consistently.
5) Try a different disc (control test)
This is the fastest way to separate “disc problem” from “PS5 disc drive problem.”
- Pick a different disc that you know works on another console (or borrow one).
- Insert it and see if PS5 reads it normally.
- If other discs work: focus on the original disc condition (clean, inspect, replace).
- If all discs fail: move to system/software and disc drive troubleshooting.
6) Check for system software updates
Outdated system software can contribute to disc mounting issues, especially after changes to storage or prior failed installs.
- From the home screen, go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software Update.
- Select Update System Software.
- If updates are available, install them, then reboot and try the disc.
7) Rebuild the PS5 database
When the PS5 database gets inconsistent, disc installs can stall or fail to launch even when the disc is fine. Rebuilding forces a metadata refresh.
- Back up anything important if you can (rebuilding usually doesn’t wipe saves, but it’s smart to be cautious).
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps (about 7 seconds). You’ll enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller via USB (some steps won’t work wirelessly).
- Select Rebuild Database.
- Wait for completion, then restart and test your disc.
8) Clear disc-related issues with Safe Mode options
Safe Mode contains options that can fix corrupted system data that impacts disc recognition. Use these only if earlier steps didn’t work.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →9) Inspect the disc drive for obvious obstructions
Dust, packaging bits, or a small obstruction can prevent the disc from seating or being read reliably.
- With the PS5 off, visually inspect the disc slot for debris.
- If you have compressed air, use short bursts from a safe distance (don’t let any nozzle touch the drive internals).
- Don’t insert metal tools or attempt to open the drive yourself.
If the drive sounds different than usual (grinding, clicking that escalates), stop and move toward repair/warranty steps.
10) Reset without losing everything (factory reset considerations)
A full factory reset is a last resort because it’s disruptive, but it can clear persistent system issues. Only do it after rebuild/cache steps and testing other discs.
- Back up saves to USB or PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you use it.
- Go to Settings → System.
- Select Reset Options.
- Choose the most conservative reset option available first (avoid the strongest wipe unless you must).
- After reset, reinstall any required updates, then test disc reading.
Error codes and messages: what to look for
PS5 often shows a brief message instead of a technical diagnosis. When it does include an error code, it helps you decide whether it’s disc/media or system data.

CE-109… and disc/reading failures
Codes that begin with CE-109 are commonly related to disc/media or drive read problems. If the same disc fails repeatedly across multiple PS5 tests, treat it as a disc issue. If multiple discs fail, treat it as a drive issue.
Disc drive not recognizing vs scratched-media vs corrupted installation
If the disc can be read long enough to start installation but then fails, corrupted install data or a broken database entry is more likely. Rebuild database and re-download/reinstall can fix it.
| Message pattern | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Can’t read disc” for every disc | Disc drive hardware/calibration or system corruption | Update system, rebuild database, then Safe Mode cache clear |
| Only one disc fails | Scratches, warping, fingerprints, or a bad copy | Clean/inspect, try on another PS5, replace if needed |
| Disc recognized, but install stalls | Corrupted install data or database mismatch | Rebuild database, delete/reinstall the game data |
| Disc ejects repeatedly | Mis-seating, obstruction, or read error causing safety eject | Re-seat, clean slot visually, test another disc |
When it’s probably hardware (and what to do)
If every disc fails, cleaning doesn’t help, and rebuild/cache steps don’t change behavior, the disc drive is likely having trouble reading or spinning at the correct parameters. At that point, software workarounds only delay the inevitable.
- Test a single known-good disc from a friend on your PS5.
- Test your PS5 disc drive** with multiple discs that you know work.
- If you hear persistent abnormal mechanical sounds, stop forcing repeated insert attempts.
Hardware repair typically means service. If your PS5 is still under warranty, you’ll usually get the fastest resolution by starting a repair request.

FAQ
Will cleaning the disc fix it if it has scratches?
Light surface smudges or fingerprints usually clear up with proper center-out cleaning. Deep scratches that you can feel with a fingernail often can’t be “cleaned away,” and replacement is usually the real fix.
Why does my PS5 read some discs but not others?
That pattern strongly suggests disc condition or copy quality on the failing titles. Try a known-good disc to confirm your drive can read at least some media.
Does rebuilding the database delete my games or saves?
Rebuilding database focuses on system metadata, not wiping your library. Still, treat it like any troubleshooting step: back up important saves if you’re nervous.
Can I fix a bad disc by downloading the game instead?
Often, yes. If the disc is the only failure, downloading the digital version can let you play without relying on the disc drive for installation. If the disc drive is the real problem (all discs fail), downloading won’t solve disc reading, but it can keep you gaming while you arrange repair.
What if my PS5 is Digital Edition?
Digital Edition can’t read discs at all. If you’re trying to use a physical game disc on a Digital Edition, it will always fail—your solution is a digital purchase and download.
Bottom Line
When your PS5 isn’t reading a disc, start with the simplest controls: full power cycle, inspect and clean the disc correctly, and test a known-good disc to separate media issues from drive issues. From there, system software updates and Safe Mode database rebuilding are your best software fixes.
If multiple discs fail after those steps, the disc drive is likely the culprit and repair is the practical next move—especially if the behavior is consistent (immediate eject, universal read failures, or abnormal drive sounds).
