1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA modder’s experimental RPCS3 build has reportedly run selected PlayStation 3 games on a jailbroken PS5 Pro. That shows PS5 hardware can execute at least some PS3 software in a specific homebrew setup; it does not make PS3 games or discs a supported feature on retail PS5 consoles, nor prove that hardware was the only reason Sony left the gap.
Can a PS5 play PS3 games or discs?
Not as an officially supported feature. Sony’s PS5: The Ultimate FAQ, published November 9, 2020, asks whether original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 games can be played on PS5 and answers: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” Sony’s current backward compatibility support page also says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs.

The modder project is a separate, unofficial experiment. It describes running RPCS3 as a native homebrew title on a jailbroken PS5 Pro; it does not turn a PS3 disc into a plug-and-play PS5 game or add PS3 compatibility to an unmodified console.

The project repository labels the build experimental and unofficial. Its documented tests were performed on one PS5 Pro running firmware 13.60 with the Relapse jailbreak, etaHEN, ftpsrv, and ShadowMount+. The repository says users must supply their own PS3 firmware and game dumps.
#1 Best Overall
- Upgraded 2TB Ultra Fast SSD - Double the space than the standard model with the same ultra fast speed. Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display).
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Slim Design - More power and storage packed in the new slim and compact design.
- Bundle comes with Astro Bot Game Voucher and C-Gamers controller charger
The project reports that the build uses Vulkan rendering through the PS5_Vulkan RADV port, SceAudioOut for audio, ScePad for controller input, and RPCS3’s Big Picture Mode for its interface. These are details of a homebrew integration, not evidence of a Sony-supported emulator. RPCS3’s own FAQ describes the main project as an open-source PS3 emulator for Windows and Linux and directs users to its compatibility list because support varies by title; it does not make this PS5 fork an official or supported RPCS3 release.
Which PS3 games have been reported working?
The repository lists only a small number of tested titles and warns that most games remain untested. Its reports are specific to the project’s test setup, not guarantees for other PS5 consoles or users.
| PS3 game | Project-reported result | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Need for Speed Carbon (BLUS30016) | Described by the project maintainer as fully playable at 60 fps. | A reported result for this game in the documented experimental setup; not an independently measured benchmark or a promise of the same performance elsewhere. |
| inFAMOUS (BCUS98119) | Reported to run, with stuttering and below-full-speed performance in heavier areas. | Playability is limited by performance problems; it is not evidence of a consistently full-speed experience. |
| Most other PS3 games | Untested, according to the project repository. | No compatibility or performance conclusion can be drawn for those titles. |
There is no verified percentage for how much of the PS3 library works on this port and no controlled comparison of its performance against other platforms. A successful test of one game cannot establish library-wide compatibility, reliability, or a ready-to-ship service.

Why the demonstration does not explain Sony’s decision
The demonstration complicates the claim that PS5 hardware simply cannot execute any PS3 code: selected software reportedly runs on one PS5 Pro under a custom, jailbroken setup. But that is a narrower claim than saying a retail PS5 could deliver a dependable PS3 service with broad game support.
Rank #2
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Emulation requires more than launching a game. The reported contrast between one title described as fully playable and another that stutters illustrates why individual compatibility and performance matter. The available evidence does not disclose Sony’s internal engineering, licensing, support-cost, or business rationale for omitting PS3 compatibility. It therefore cannot show that software work was the only—or the primary—obstacle.

| Question | Sony-supported PS5 experience | Experimental RPCS3 build |
|---|---|---|
| Official status | Sony’s published guidance excludes original PS3 games; its support page says PS3 discs are unsupported. | Unofficial homebrew; the project says it is not supported by the RPCS3 team. |
| Console setup | Standard PS5 use, subject to Sony’s supported features. | Tested on one PS5 Pro with firmware 13.60 and specified jailbreak and homebrew components. |
| Games and performance | No PS3 compatibility is promised by the cited Sony guidance. | Results vary by tested title; the project reports two games and says most remain untested. |
| PS3 discs | Not supported by PS5 consoles, according to PlayStation Support. | The project describes using game dumps and user-supplied PS3 firmware, not a supported retail-disc feature. |
Can you insert a PS3 disc and use this port?
No—not as a supported PS5 feature. Sony says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs, and the modder project describes a jailbroken-console setup using game files and user-supplied firmware. Its report does not establish that inserting a retail PS3 disc into a PS5 will work.
The sources do not settle the jurisdiction-specific legality of jailbreaking or creating and using game dumps. Check the laws and terms that apply where you live rather than treating the technical demonstration as legal advice.
