No, a PS4 cannot run PS5 games natively. You can, however, stream a PS5 game to a PS4 with PlayStation Remote Play. The game runs on the PS5; the PS4 acts as the screen-and-controller endpoint. That means you need access to a PS5 and a network connection—Remote Play does not turn a PS4 into a PS5.
Can a PS4 run PS5 games?
PlayStation’s supported-platform descriptions distinguish PS4 and PS5 games, while describing Remote Play as streaming. Taken together, they establish that a PS4 does not install or execute the PS5 version of a game as PS4 software. The supported way to play a PS5 game through a PS4 is to stream it from a PS5 using Remote Play.

That distinction matters: the PS5 does the game processing and must be available to run the game. The PS4 receives the stream and sends your controls back over the network. PlayStation describes the feature this way: “PS Remote Play lets you stream and play your PS4 and PS5 games.” PlayStation Remote Play
Native play and Remote Play compared
| Option | Where the game runs | Hardware needed | Network dependence | PS4’s role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native PS5-game play on PS4 | Not supported on PS4 | A PS4 alone cannot run the PS5 game | Not applicable | Cannot act as the game-running console |
| Remote Play from PS5 to PS4 | On the PS5 | A PS5 running or offering the game, plus a PS4 as the destination | Required for streaming | Remote endpoint for the stream and controls |
PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance describes the reverse direction: the PS5 can play the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, though some features may be unavailable or behavior may differ. That does not mean PS4 can play PS5 games.

What you need to stream a PS5 game to PS4
- A PS5 console that you own or can access, with the game available to play on it.
- A PS4 console to use as the Remote Play destination.
- The free PlayStation Remote Play app and consoles set up with the same PlayStation account.
- A broadband network connection for the consoles and a compatible game.
- A compatible controller, unless a supported touch-control case applies.
PlayStation says PS5 games can be streamed to a PS4 over a home broadband wired network, and requires the same PlayStation account on both consoles. See the official Remote Play requirements and setup guidance for current instructions. The essential flow is to make sure you have access to the PS5 and game, set up Remote Play on both consoles under the same account, connect them to the network, and use the PS4 as the endpoint.
How fast does the internet need to be?
PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum internet connection speed for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are bandwidth guidelines, not guarantees of a particular resolution, responsiveness, or uninterrupted play. Network quality and latency can affect the stream even when a connection meets the listed speeds. PlayStation’s Remote Play page provides the current guidance.

What Remote Play does—and does not—change
Remote Play lets you access a game running on a PS5 from a PS4; it does not make the PS4 compatible with the PS5 version or let you play that game without a PS5. If you need the game to run locally on the hardware in front of you, a PS4 is not a substitute for a PS5. PlayStation’s November 2020 PS5 FAQ also documented PS5-to-PS4 Remote Play, but it is historical corroboration rather than a current performance guarantee.
