PS5 Emulator Requirements: CPU, GPU, RAM, and Storage Explained

PS5 emulation has no universal PC specification. Compare the published requirements for KytyPS5 and SharpEmu, and learn why API support does not guarantee game compatibility.

There is no universal PC specification for PS5 emulation. Requirements depend on the emulator, and meeting a project’s stated CPU or graphics requirement does not guarantee that a particular game will run well—or at all. The clearest published baseline in the project documentation reviewed is KytyPS5’s: a 64-bit x86 CPU (or Apple Silicon using Rosetta 2) and a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with current drivers. The reviewed project requirements do not establish a general RAM amount or storage type or capacity.

What hardware do PS5 emulators require?

Use the requirements published by the specific emulator you plan to run, not a generic “PS5 emulator PC” specification. The following comparison reflects the project documentation reviewed as of October 4, 2026; emulator support can change.

Component KytyPS5 SharpEmu What that means
CPU and architecture 64-bit x86 CPU; macOS on Apple Silicon is supported through Rosetta 2. KytyPS5 project documentation x64 hosts; its macOS x64 build runs on Apple Silicon through Rosetta 2. SharpEmu project documentation Neither project documentation reviewed specifies a universal core count, clock speed, or named CPU tier.
GPU and graphics API Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU and current drivers. KytyPS5 project documentation Vulkan-capable GPU and current graphics driver; macOS uses MoltenVK. SharpEmu project documentation Check the exact emulator’s API requirement and whether your GPU and driver support it. No universal GPU model or performance tier is specified.
RAM No general runtime capacity stated in the reviewed requirements. KytyPS5 project documentation No general runtime capacity stated in the reviewed requirements. SharpEmu project documentation These sources do not support a universal 16 GB or 32 GB minimum.
Storage No general storage type, free-space, cache, or per-game size recommendation stated in the reviewed requirements. KytyPS5 project documentation No general storage type, free-space, cache, or per-game size recommendation stated in the reviewed requirements. SharpEmu project documentation Game files and emulator data need storage, but exact space needs depend on the title and setup. The reviewed documentation does not establish that an SSD is mandatory.
Operating system Windows 10 version 1803 or later, a current Linux distribution, or macOS on Apple Silicon. KytyPS5 project documentation Windows x64, Linux x64, and macOS x64; Apple Silicon uses Rosetta 2. SharpEmu project documentation Confirm support for the specific build and host OS; platform support is experimental.

Why CPU and GPU requirements are not a playability guarantee

A stated CPU architecture or graphics API requirement indicates that the host meets a technical baseline; it does not establish a target frame rate or ensure that a game’s features are implemented. SharpEmu’s documentation says, “Platform support is still experimental, so compatibility and performance vary by game, operating system, and GPU driver.” SharpEmu project documentation

Compatibility labels also describe different outcomes. A game might boot but fail before its menu, reach a game-ready state without being tested to completion, or run with glitches or crashes. Check the chosen project’s own compatibility information and note the emulator build, game, operating system, GPU driver, reported frame rate, and whether the test reached the end of the game when those details are available.

What reported game results can tell you

These dated reports illustrate why performance observations should not be read as minimum hardware specifications:

  • KytyPS5: Tom’s Hardware reported on July 31, 2026, that XIII ran at up to about 30 FPS with visible environmental and texture glitches. The report also described Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Wrath of the Mutants at around 22–24 FPS after a crash on first launch, with stable operation after restarting. These are individual reported results, not controlled tests establishing minimum PC requirements. Tom’s Hardware, July 31, 2026
  • SharpEmu: Tom’s Hardware reported on September 27, 2026, that developers had reached a playable 60 FPS state in six of 55 tested titles, while 12 titles had reached game-ready status. The six reported at 60 FPS were Dreaming Sarah, Void Terrarium, New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja, Tetris Forever, Hoa, and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered. The report said the games had not been tested from start to finish and could still have minor graphics or audio issues. This is a dated development milestone, not a guarantee for another PC or a later emulator build. Tom’s Hardware, September 27, 2026

How to check whether your PC meets a project’s requirements

  1. Choose the emulator first. Read its current official documentation and identify the specific build and host operating system it supports.
  2. Check CPU architecture and OS support. For example, KytyPS5 lists a 64-bit x86 CPU and the operating-system options in the table above; Apple Silicon support uses Rosetta 2. Do not infer a core-count or clock-speed requirement that the project has not stated.
  3. Verify the graphics API and driver. For KytyPS5, check for Vulkan 1.3 support and current drivers. For SharpEmu, check Vulkan support and the current driver; its macOS path uses MoltenVK.
  4. Look up the exact game’s status. Use the project’s compatibility information where available, and distinguish booting from reaching a game-ready state or playing through to completion.
  5. Read the test conditions before comparing results. A result is useful only in context: emulator version, game, host OS, GPU driver, hardware, frame rate, glitches, crashes, and test duration can all matter.

What you can—and cannot—plan for

The documentation reviewed supports checking architecture, operating-system support, graphics API, and driver currency for each emulator. It does not establish a universal CPU model, RAM minimum, SSD requirement, free-space figure, or recommended PC build. The separate ShadPS5 FAQ gives tentative project-specific guidance and describes the project as experimental; it should not be treated as a specification for KytyPS5, SharpEmu, or PS5 emulation generally.
