If you own a console and want to play on another screen, Remote Play is the established route. Emulation is experimental, and whether a particular game works depends on its compatibility with the emulator build and host computer.
How the two approaches differ
| Decision | PS Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On a PS5 or PS4 console, then streams over a network to a supported device. | Through emulator software on a computer; compatibility varies by game and build. |
| What you need | A PS5 or PS4, a compatible destination device, the free Remote Play app, and a compatible game. PlayStation Portal requires a PS5. | A computer and an emulator build that supports the particular game. The KytyPS5 project describes itself as under active development. |
| Network needs | PlayStation requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better experience. | The cited sources do not establish a universal network requirement for emulation. |
| What compatibility means | PlayStation lists supported devices and exclusions for some games and peripherals. | A game booting or reaching gameplay does not establish that it is playable from beginning to end. |
| Best fit | You own a console and want to play its games on another screen. | You want to investigate whether a specific game works on a particular emulator build and computer. |
What PS Remote Play does—and what it does not do
Remote Play does not run PlayStation games independently on a phone, PC, Mac, or other destination device. The console runs the game and sends the video and audio over a network; your compatible device displays the stream and sends your controls back. PlayStation says a PS4 or PS5 console is required. PlayStation’s Remote Play page lists compatible phones, tablets, computers, supported Android TV devices, other PlayStation consoles, and Portal, subject to device requirements.
Connection and controls
PlayStation states, “Broadband internet with at least 5Mbps is required,” and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures are requirements and guidance, not a promise of a particular picture quality or responsiveness: PlayStation notes that results can vary with the network environment. If you use mobile data, the stream counts against your data allowance.
PlayStation lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 among controller options; availability depends on the destination device. Mobile devices can also use touch controls. Check the official device and controller information for your specific setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Game and device restrictions
Not every game or accessory setup is supported. PlayStation excludes games that require a VR headset or extra peripherals beyond the listed controllers, as well as games that must be streamed through a PS Plus Premium membership. Check the individual game’s compatibility rather than assuming a title will work because the device supports Remote Play.
Portal is a PS5 accessory, not a console replacement
PlayStation Portal is designed for Remote Play from a PS5; it does not work with PS4. Remote Play must be enabled on the console, and using it while the console is in rest mode requires the relevant network-related rest-mode settings. See PlayStation’s PS Portal compatibility and setup information.

What PS5 emulation can currently mean
The KytyPS5 project describes its emulator as actively developed for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. Its project status says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games, and that development focuses on compatibility and boot reliability. The project also warns that behavior can change significantly between builds. These are the project’s own status claims, not independent tests; consult the KytyPS5 repository for current information.
Booting, reaching gameplay, and being playable are different milestones
- Booting: The game starts or gets past an initial launch stage.
- Reaching in-game: The game reaches gameplay, but may still have serious problems or stop later.
- Fully playable: A stronger claim that the game can be played reliably; it should be tied to a specific build and evidence, not inferred from booting alone.
A September 2026 GamesRadar+ report on a developer update said that 12 of 55 tested games reached in-game, while six were described as fully playable at 60 FPS. That is a dated report about one developer’s tested set—not a representative success rate for all PS5 games, a guarantee for any individual title, or evidence that every game in the set runs equally well on every computer. See the GamesRadar+ report for its context.

Which option should you choose?
- You own a PS5 or PS4 and want another screen: Start with Remote Play. Confirm your device and game are supported, and check that your network meets PlayStation’s guidance.
- You want to use Portal: You need a PS5; Portal is not compatible with PS4.
- You do not own a PlayStation console: Remote Play will not provide access to games without one. Emulation is not a dependable substitute: check the current emulator compatibility information for the exact game and build, and distinguish a game starting from one that is fully playable.
- You care about a particular game: For Remote Play, verify the game’s restrictions and your destination device. For emulation, look for current, title-specific compatibility details for the build you intend to use; broad claims about a project do not establish that your game works.
