1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor dependable PS5 gameplay, a PS5 console is still the practical supported choice. PC emulators are making progress, but their compatibility is experimental and varies by game and emulator version. PlayStation Remote Play can put your console’s games on another screen, but it streams from a PS4 or PS5; it does not let you play without a console. If a game has an official PC release, that is a separate product—not the PS5 version running through emulation.
Can you play PS5 games on PC without a PS5?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on what you mean by “play PS5 games.” An official PC release, where one exists, can run on a suitable PC without a PS5. It is a separate version that you obtain for PC, not a copy of the PS5 version being emulated. Sony says PlayStation Studios PC and console versions are different products, and save data currently cannot transfer between PS4/PS5 and PC versions. Sony’s PC Games support page explains the distinction.

Running a PS5 game through a PC emulator is a different proposition. Independent emulator projects describe their software as experimental and their work as ongoing. Compatibility, boot reliability, and performance can differ by game, emulator build, and PC. That is not equivalent to the predictable support of playing on the console.
Is there a working PS5 emulator?
There are experimental PS5 emulator projects, and reports of progress are real—but “working” does not mean that an emulator can reliably run a broad library. KytyPS5 says its development focuses on expanding game compatibility and improving boot reliability. SharpEmu describes itself as experimental and documents use with legally obtained game files. Those are project descriptions, not Sony compatibility certifications or guarantees. KytyPS5 project and SharpEmu project.

On September 27, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that SharpEmu v0.0.4-release.2 reportedly ran six titles at 60 FPS, alongside continued development work on shader translation and Vulkan support. That is a report about one build and a small set of titles—not a general performance promise for other games, PCs, or settings. Tom’s Hardware’s report and GamesRadar’s coverage discuss reported compatibility claims; neither is an official Sony certification.
It would be misleading to conclude either that PS5 emulation is impossible or that every PS5 title is playable. Compatibility is changing, and the available reports do not establish a representative, independently benchmarked comparison between emulation and a PS5 console.

PS5 console vs. PC emulation vs. Remote Play or a PC release
| Option | What it does | Support and compatibility | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console | Runs PS5 games on PlayStation hardware. | Official PlayStation hardware and support. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, with exceptions and possible missing functions or unexpected behavior. Sony’s backward-compatibility information. | A PS5 console and access to the game. Sony says PS5 games played on a PS5 require a DualSense controller. |
| PC emulation | Attempts to run PS5 software through an independent PC project. | Experimental and game-by-game; status can change with emulator versions. Not supported by Sony. | A PC and a compatible emulator/game setup; requirements vary. A universal PC specification is not established. |
| PS Remote Play | Streams gameplay from your PS5 or PS4 to a compatible screen. | Official PlayStation streaming feature, subject to device compatibility and network conditions. | A PS4 or PS5 console, a compatible client device, and an internet connection. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. |
| Official PC release | Runs a separately released PC edition of a game. | Availability and compatibility are specific to each game and PC release. | A PC that meets that release’s requirements and access to the PC edition; it does not provide the PS5 version or current save transfer. |
Can you use Remote Play instead of a PS5 emulator?
Remote Play is useful when the goal is to play your own console games on a computer, phone, tablet, or another supported screen. The game still runs on the PS4 or PS5; the receiving device displays a stream and sends your controls back to the console. Sony lists compatible devices and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience, with 5 Mbps as the minimum. Those figures are service guidance, not a guarantee of low latency or image quality. See PlayStation Remote Play.
For the described Windows setup, Sony lists Windows 10/11, a PS5, a PlayStation account, an internet connection, a controller, and a USB cable. Requirements and controller options can vary across Remote Play devices, so consult Sony’s Windows PC setup instructions rather than applying that list to every client.

Is a PS5 emulator better than buying a PS5?
There is no evidence-based universal answer on cost or performance: it depends on the PC, game, and setup, and a broad independent benchmark is not established here. The practical choice is clearer:
- Choose a PS5 if you want the supported route and dependable access to PS5 gameplay.
- Consider an emulator only as an experiment if you are comfortable checking compatibility for a specific game and accepting that results may change across builds.
- Use Remote Play if you already have a PS4 or PS5 and want to play on another screen; it does not avoid console ownership.
- Check for an official PC edition if you want to play on PC without a console. Treat it as a separate purchase/version, and do not assume console saves transfer.
What about PS4 games and legality?
PS5 backward compatibility is about playing many PS4 games on a PS5 console; it does not mean that a PC can emulate PS5 games. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games work on PS5, while noting exceptions and possible limitations. Check Sony’s compatibility list and caveats for a particular title.

There is no single legal answer for every country and every activity involving emulators, game copies, firmware, or circumvention. The answer depends on jurisdiction and conduct. A project’s statement that it is unaffiliated with Sony or intended for legally obtained files does not itself determine whether a particular use is lawful. Do not assume emulator use or game-file sourcing is universally legal; check current rules where you live.
