The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot read discs at all, while only specific newer Digital Edition model groups accept Sony’s add-on drive. A disc can also fit the slot yet remain unsupported, such as an audio CD, an unfinalized DVD, or a burned disc.
Use the checks below in order. They separate a model mismatch or unsuitable disc from a likely console fault, while keeping destructive software steps until the end.

1. Confirm that your PS5 can use a disc drive
Find the model number on the console before buying an add-on drive or assuming the optical drive has failed. Sony’s disc-drive setup instructions identify the PlayStation 5 CFI-ZDD1 disc drive as compatible only with the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups.

Sony’s media guide confirms that disc support is not universal across “Digital Edition” consoles: the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support discs, whereas CFI-2000 Digital Edition consoles and CFI-7000 consoles can be expanded with a separately sold drive. Read the model number rather than relying on the console’s appearance or the word “Digital” in its name. See Sony’s disc and USB media guide for the model-specific qualification.

Check the console before installing an add-on drive
- Turn the PS5 completely off, not merely into Rest Mode.
- Unplug the console and allow it to cool.
- Remove the appropriate console cover as shown in Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 instructions.
- Clip the drive into place beneath the cover; do not force it if the fit or cover does not match your model.
- Reconnect the console and complete the on-screen pairing process. Internet access is required to pair the drive with the console during setup.
If your console is an ineligible model, software troubleshooting cannot make it read discs. If an eligible Digital Edition has a correctly installed drive but the drive is not detected, treat that as a drive-detection problem rather than a normal “disc won’t read” problem.
2. Check whether the disc format is supported
PS5 supports specified Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD media. The physical fact that a disc fits the slot does not make it playable. Sony lists the following categories in its media guide:

Formats and disc types PS5 does not play
- Audio CDs and other CDs.
- Burned discs, according to Sony’s disc-troubleshooting guidance.
- BD-RE version 1.0.
- BD-R/RE XL media.
- DVDs that have not been finalized.
- 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked or deformed discs, repaired discs, and discs carrying stickers or paper labels.
There is an important practical distinction in Sony’s documentation. The media guide names certain BD-R/RE and DVD-R/RW categories, while the troubleshooting page states plainly: “PS5 consoles can’t play burned discs or audio CDs.” Treat that troubleshooting statement as the decisive guidance for consumer-recorded discs; a pressed game or movie disc is the safer test medium.

A home-recorded disc therefore cannot be used as a reliable test of the PS5 drive.

3. Insert the disc in the correct orientation
For a PS5 standing vertically on its official stand, insert the disc with the label side facing left. This is the first physical check Sony lists for a disc that is not recognized. Eject the disc, turn it to the correct orientation and reinsert it rather than repeatedly pushing against the drive.
If the console is positioned horizontally, follow the orientation shown by the drive opening and the console’s printed markings; do not infer the vertical left-facing instruction from a horizontal setup. Keep the console stable on its stand or feet while inserting a disc.
4. Inspect and clean the disc without making the damage worse
What to look for
- Fingerprints, grease, dust or smudges on the reading surface.
- Deep scratches, cracks, warping or a deformed edge.
- Stickers, paper labels or residue.
- A disc that has been repaired or modified.
Hold the disc by its edge or center hole so you do not add fingerprints. For visible dirt or smudges, Sony recommends a lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Wipe from the center straight toward the edge, not in a circular motion. Do not use abrasive materials or promise that cleaning will repair scratches: cleaning can remove surface dirt, but it cannot restore damaged recording layers.

Reinsert after each check
Sony advises reinserting the disc after each step. That gives you a clear result for the orientation check, cleaning check and media test instead of changing several variables at once.

5. Test a second supported disc
After checking orientation and condition, test another known-supported disc, such as a commercial PS5 game, a commercial Blu-ray movie or a standard DVD. Use a disc type that your console model and installed drive are expected to support.

This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive hardware test. A second disc can also be dirty or incompatible, so confirm its format before drawing a conclusion.
6. Match the symptom to the correct Sony procedure
“The PS5 will not read this disc” and “the PS5 cannot detect the Blu-ray drive” are different conditions. Using the wrong procedure can waste time or lead you to reset a console unnecessarily.

Disc-read failure or error CE-110538-8
Sony describes CE-110538-8 as a failed Blu-ray read. Its first checks are fingerprints, smudges, scratches and correct insertion, followed by testing another disc. Apply the orientation, cleaning, format and second-disc checks above. If several supported discs still fail, use Sony’s CE-110538-8 guidance and refer persistent trouble to PlayStation Support or Repairs.

Drive-not-detected error SU-101312-8
SU-101312-8 concerns a Blu-ray drive that the console cannot detect. Sony’s instructions for this specific update or detection error include a different sequence:
- Power off the PS5 and unplug it.
- Wait five minutes, then restart your router.
- Restart the console.
- Delete the update file and retry the update.
- Only if the problem remains, consider a console reset.
Follow the full SU-101312-8 instructions when that code is displayed. Do not apply this router-and-update sequence indiscriminately to every disc that fails to read.

For an ongoing read problem affecting multiple supported discs, Sony’s general troubleshooting sequence places non-destructive Safe Mode options before a full system reinstall.
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Start with the cache option, then use database rebuilding if the issue remains, following the on-screen prompts.
These options address system data organization and temporary cache information. They do not make an unsupported disc format compatible, repair a cracked disc or add a drive to an ineligible CFI-1000 Digital Edition.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a last resort
Sony places Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) after Rebuild Database when the issue remains. The reset deletes all information on the console. Before selecting it, back up required saves, captures, settings and other data and read Sony’s current backup and system-software reinstallation instructions. A reset is not an early routine step for a single dirty or unsupported disc.
8. Decide when the evidence points to repair
Contact PlayStation Support or Repairs when the console has an eligible drive, the disc is a supported commercial format, orientation and cleaning have been checked, and multiple known-good discs still fail. Also seek service when the drive remains undetected after the model-specific installation and error guidance, or when the drive makes abnormal mechanical noises or cannot accept/eject discs.
When contacting support, record the console model group, whether the drive is built in or a CFI-ZDD1 add-on, the exact error code, the disc types tested and whether any supported disc worked. That information directs the case to a read failure, a drive-detection issue or an incompatibility instead of starting with an unnecessary reset.

Quick decision checklist
- Model: Is the console CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 if you are using the CFI-ZDD1? The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition has no disc support.
- Drive: Is an add-on drive fully clipped in, paired over the internet and intended for that model?
- Format: Is the disc a supported Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD, rather than a CD, burned disc, BD-RE 1.0, BD-R/RE XL or unfinalized DVD?
- Shape and condition: Is it circular, uncracked, undeformed, free of stickers and clean?
- Orientation: With the PS5 vertical on its stand, does the label face left?
- Comparison: Does another known-supported disc work?
- Error path: Is the message a read error such as CE-110538-8 or a drive-detection error such as SU-101312-8?
- Software: Have you reserved Safe Mode cache/database options for persistent failures and kept the data-erasing reset until after backup?
